Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

Just been through these 2 threads and really enjoying them!

I'd describe my style as bright autumnal academia as I love a bit of mustard/orange/maroon an the odd mushroom/leaf/moth/pumpkin print!

This thread has reminded me I was planning to get through The Secret History this autumn but I need to finish the 4th Thursday Murder Club first!

SynchOrSwim · 17/10/2023 16:52

Suggestions for DA films to watch:
Kill Your Darlings
Riot Club
Good Will Hunting
Mona Lisa Smile
Dead Poets Society

Books I plan to read:
The Secret History
In my dreams I hold a knife
Ninth House
The maidens
Babel
More Agatha Christie (I've only read one!)
More Jane Austen before I visit Bath next year.
Cosy mysteries... any suggestions?
And if anyone can suggest any books to fill the Cormoran Strike shaped hole in my heart until the next book or tv show is out that would be wonderful!

Notsosecrethistory · 17/10/2023 18:19

@SynchOrSwim Have you read the Tuesday Murder club? I think it will fit your remit nicely, and there's 4 of them to keep you going...

Notsosecrethistory · 17/10/2023 18:20

Sorry! Just seen your 1st post. Ok, back to the drawing board...

Notsosecrethistory · 17/10/2023 18:21

Saw a distinctly cranberry beret on the school run this AM, with a fur coat... wasn't you was it @helenahandcart78? Chances are slim, but it would make my day.

Notsosecrethistory · 17/10/2023 18:25

I am about to dive into The Turnglass. I've been saving it, and I'm really looking forward to it.
The whole concept of this book is very intriguing, and right up our collective street I think.
You can either wait till I've read it 😂, or check it out: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Turnglass-Gareth-Rubin-ebook/dp/B0BQ4KSSJG/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1JO25OKZ7JU9Z&keywords=the+turnglass+gareth+rubin&qid=1697563485&sprefix=the+turn%2Caps%2C90&sr=8-1

BonjourCrisette · 17/10/2023 18:43

That looks brilliant, @Notsosecrethistory - putting it on my Christmas list!

Bookist · 17/10/2023 19:04

The Turnglass sounds fabulous and the cover art is gorgeous. I've lost track now of how many books I've ordered thanks to you lovely lot. Have just started The Thursday Murder Club. And my gorgeous 2nd hand hardback edition of I Capture The Castle arrived yesterday. It has a very sweet inscription in the front to someone called Emily who received it for her 16th birthday x

Delurking. So enjoying your thread. But I thought it would be difficult to combine DA with dog walks, swimming and gardening, which is all I do. However, books I can help with. I suggest green penguins; British library classics;everything by Dorothy Sayers, but especially Gaudy Night, set in an Oxford womens college. Latest favourite is the County Guides series by Ian Sansome. These are all crime.
My clothes have also been influenced by this thread, all a bit more considered somehow. Today was Blundstones, Baleno olive green riding coat, mustard wool and silk socks (Falke), mustard cable cardi and long sleeved tshirt with a disappointing pair of grey joggers. There are some gorgeous cord trousers still available in the Brora sale. I want them, and obviously need them, but I had an expensive break in Paris last week so I’m spent up. Paris is definitely DA, all those mysterious double doors leading to hidden courtyards.

Hello and welcome @Zebracat. Really pleased you have decided to de-lurk and join our twin-set cabal x

Bookist · 17/10/2023 19:16

@Divebar2021 The wrong shoes! That makes so much sense. I recently tried on some standard Mary Jane's but they were too sweet and made my outfit too prim. So I tried some chunkier Dr Marten Mary Jane's that were slightly ugly, but looked much better x

Afraid not @Notsosecrethistory - I only left the house today to walk the dog in a distinctly non-DA raincoat, skinnies and wellies!
Haven't actually worn the beret out yet. I keep trying it with different outfits, think it maybe looks a little affected, and then lose my nerve. Dammit though, I will not be beaten by some knitted headgear!

helenahandcart78 · 17/10/2023 19:37

@Zebracat love the sound of those mustard socks - very luxurious!

helenahandcart78 · 17/10/2023 19:46

So that is The Historian,The Shadow Wind, and Hamnet now ordered from Amazon. Currently 11 books purchased under the influence of this thread!! And I suspect there will be more...

Can't make up my mind what to wear tomorrow. I normally like to plan something the night before. But sometimes I just have to find out what my mood is on the day and then decide off the back of that!

Drives DH mad when I pack for a trip. I could never just bring 3 tops for 3 days - I might not like any of them when the time comes!

helenahandcart78 · 17/10/2023 19:54

Forgot to show you this satin blouse from a charity shop.

It caught my eye because of the fitted ruched sleeves. Someone mentioned Mona Lisa Smile style with the long blouse sleeves under a cardi? Anyway, I didn't like the big gaudy silver buttons that were on it, so I bought different buttons and thread and sewed them on. I am so chuffed with the result! I have never done that before but I drew inspiration from the talented dressmakers amongst us!

The Turnglass book looks fab! I tried reading S years ago, got fed up and dropped the cards out in the wrong order, and then lost it in a house move.
I have a Joanie book cardi on today which is slightly costumey but toastie warm.

Bookist · 17/10/2023 20:42

Well exactly. Men just don't seem to understand how much mood can affect your outfit and vice versa.

SqueakyDinosaur · 17/10/2023 20:44

I have been getting cold weather clothes out and, as is traditional, I can't find the bag that has my favourite stuff in - long mermaid cut tweed skirt, cashmere twinset, etc. It'll probably turn up around May.

Bookist · 17/10/2023 20:45

I need your help! I really love the blouse worn under a sleeveless, knitted vest look. But I have ample boobs and narrow shoulders so I think it makes me look matronly. Is there any flattering way to make it work for me?

Bookist · 17/10/2023 20:47

No doubt your bag is hiding in the very same place as my cashmere jumpers. You know, when I carefully stored them away somewhere safe.

SqueakyDinosaur · 17/10/2023 20:47

I think a scoop neck rather than a v neck would help.

TressiliansStone · 17/10/2023 20:55

Both The Turnglass and S/Ship of Theseus look perfectly delicious! Thank you for those recommendations – and the Thursday Murder Club.

TressiliansStone · 17/10/2023 21:06

Talking of lost books, I started reading Calvino's If On A Winter's Night a Traveller... but left it on an overnight bus.

There's poetic for you.

helenahandcart78 · 17/10/2023 21:14

I agree with @SqueakyDinosaur - scoop neck might be more balancing @bookist?

helenahandcart78 · 17/10/2023 21:19

@SynchOrSwim - just looked up Kill Your Darlings and it looks really good. Can't believe I've never heard of it before but I'm definitely going to enjoy it. Thank you!

Bookist · 17/10/2023 21:22

Yes, I think a scoop of v neck would be more flattering. Though, as ever, I always have a deeply seated urge to wear polo necks.
