Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

I have just finished transcribing the household inventory of an C18th sea captain. So in case anyone's interest in home decor stretches that far back, I can tell you that in Scotland in 1763, it's à la mode to have matching check curtains for your windows and your four-poster bed.

Our captain's taste in literature encompassed The Spectator, the works of African Roman playwright Terence, Seneca's Morals, Manton's Sermons... and Memoirs of a Man of Pleasure. He was also teaching himself bookkeeping, Low Dutch and fencing - presumably with his silver hilted sword (value: ten shillings).

Interesting! Was this for a job or hobby?

TressiliansStone · 14/10/2023 09:59

Hobby. I'm retired, so really do sit with my feet up (in fetching microwavable slippers), looking out at the deer hares crows on the hills to rest my eyes from transcribing C18th manuscripts.

You understand I don't actually have a life.Grin

I get out so little, the now-purchased <shakes fist> tweed jacket will get worn less than once a year.

But such an existence has its compensations.Brew

Though I'm slightly concerned I'm reaching the point where, as Byatt's Beatrice Nest says, women simply become witches.

Notsosecrethistory · 14/10/2023 10:04

I think this sounds absolutely lovely @TressiliansStone

I do have threads, eg:

But I can bore for Britain on this stuff, so caveat lector.

Good morrow my Dark Darlings. I was completely over excited to sleep in this intricately carved four poster bed last night. In a room that had, reputedly, been slept in by Elizabeth I. No one else was remotely interested but I knew where to come with this fascinating bit of news x

@TressiliansStone and@Bookist I am madly jealous of the both of you and need more detail!

I've just smuggled yet another Vinted parcel into the house - mostly beige and cream neutrals including a rather nice knit pleated skirt. More on the preppy side I'd say. What tights with a cream skirt if you're wearing in autumn?

TressiliansStone · 14/10/2023 11:30

Full appreciation, bookist.

Of the room. And of your generosity in sharing it with us. <happy sigh>

TressiliansStone · 14/10/2023 11:35

It's very kind of you all to be so nice. A little validation goes a long way.Grin

Brew and Cake for you all in Tressilian Towers.

Happy Saturday fellow Questers!
I fell off the thread for a couple of days as work has been hectic. Will now read back to catch up. Today is a beautiful autumn day here - cool enough for a polo neck (triple yay!) but also bright and sunny.

Today's outfit...

@helenahandcart78 love it. As always the 'woman on the go' footwear placement is the best bit.

@TressiliansStone I shall be following your other thread tout suite!
@Bookist that looks amazing! Whereabouts were you, and did you have time to gaze broodingly out the windows where there were hopefully stags frolicking in the mist??

VisaWoes · 14/10/2023 16:24

I’m off to Spitalfields and Shoreditch area next week, anyone know of any good shops in that neck of the woods for clothes?

Bookist · 14/10/2023 18:22

I am somewhere in deepest Hampshire <mysterious>. Honestly the bed was amazing, carved with Green Man faces and flowers on every inch. However it was tiny so my husband and I had a poor night's sleep. You forget how much smaller people used to be back before decent nutrition and modern medicine.

BonjourCrisette · 14/10/2023 22:41

@Bookist that really does sound wonderful! Apart from the bad night's sleep, that is.

triggers34 · 15/10/2023 09:56

I'm home and pleased to be re united with all my clothes. Todays choice a liberty print (I think) dress teamed with the oversized sleeveless jumper I bought a few days ago. I'll add tights and boots if I go any where.

The four poster bed in the background we've had a few years bought 2nd hand probably 80's . Dh and I love it though it doesn't really go with the rest of the decor - duck egg blue wall paper and white ikea wardrobes oh well .

I love the idea of matching check curtains for it mentioned up thread. Happy Sunday every one .

I've just looked up Fabhatrix in the Grassmarket, per Highlandcoo.

Oh my word. There's a shop I wouldn't be safe to be let loose in.

It's just reminded me that many years ago in Venice I acquired a tricorn hat. It was the most expensive hat I'd ever owned... and looked terrible on me. So it languished on the top of the coat-stand for many a year, gathering dust, until I gritted my teeth and Oxfamed it in the hope it would find a new home and be loved.

Bookist · 15/10/2023 11:47

So my outfit today was going to be suitably dark academic. A dark denim shift dress with navy frogging on the yoke. A navy Arran knit cardigan. Opaque black tights, chunky black loafers.

But look how flipping short the supposed dress is! Ouch! Can I venture out in it?

Please and thank you can you tell me where you got the knitted top from? I can't find anywhere that does sleeveless jumpers

triggers34 · 15/10/2023 12:17

@Crispynoodle
I got it from a charity shop, it's marks and Spencer men's size XL and Lambswool. Try Vinted - another good brand to look at is Woolovers

Aww bless you. I did brave the high street and no one stopped and stared, I think. My tights are very thick so essentially leggings, so I assured myself I was just wearing a tunic top and leggings.

BonjourCrisette · 15/10/2023 18:24

I really like your dress, @Bookist. Love the shoes too.

Today's outfit featured a pair of dusty dark teal cords and a knee length collared leather coat which kept the chill out nicely.

Voltefarce · 15/10/2023 20:17

It’s been a chilly day here, so I’ve just ventured up into the loft to do the big wardrobe switchover. My boots are missing in action, but wool and tweed skirts down and ready for the dry cleaners (who is going to make a tidy sum from me tomorrow).
