Clothes that don't feel like you're wearing any

My holy grail.
I absolutely love clothes, but I don't like the feel of them against my body much at all. I am happiest in my pyjamas or a flowy gown.
People used to suggest leggings or loose fit jeans but these are the absolute worst, the thick seams of the denim, the weight; and leggings make me feel like i'm wearing a sausage skin (not to mention I don't even like them). I am just not much of a dress person so don't know what the perfect solution is. One thing is certain, I hate pattern, unless it's a very small, subtle check.

What I have already ruled out are jumpsuits and any kind of sport/leisure wear. I don't like the look.

It's hopeless isn't it? I only have a 26 inch waist and all elasticated things irritate me there, and zips/buttons too. If I buy a size up I look ridiculous. I suppose I want to wear my pyjamas forever or floaty strappy linen in summer. No idea if this is a sensorial or psychological thing but it's tedious.

My most comfortable items, and i don't own much thanks to this issue, are my corduroy loose dungarees, some loose yoga style black harems (summer weight) and linen smock things. I can wear tights with ease funnily enough but of course since I don't like most dresses this feels pointless.
Winter is my favourite season but I have no idea how to stay comfy. Any ideas? I am sure that I sound contrary and difficult, apologies in advance!

most of all I hate anything that clings in any way to my waist or chest. Flat soft waistbands would be perfect but not only are they hard to find, they are also mostly on summer garments. I can afford to spend but nothing ludicrous/high end.

I got a pair of yoga pants recently, they are soft as heaven and although they do hang from your waist the waist band is wide and not tight.
They go well with a big loose jumper/sweater type top.

If you like tights, what's wrong with a winter dress on top? Can you wear boots?

Whathappenedto · 01/10/2023 21:30

I feel similarly about clothes, just in the last few years I have noticed that I literally cannot stand wearing eg a dress or skirt any more, the feeling of all the fabric, the restriction on movement. No way. But then I also don't like close fitting clothes and tightness around my waist, and I absolutely hate t-shirts or tops with any kind of stretch fabric in- I can just... feel it all day, and it's so uncomfortable and wrong feeling.

Just commiserating really!
My most comfortable trousers are the Yarrel shape from Finisterre: finisterre.com/collections/womens-trousers
And these from Free People: https://www.freepeople.com/shop/osaka-jeans/?color=001&type=REGULAR&quantity=1

For t-shirts and tops I just make sure they are 100% cotton or linen, and so I know they won't cling.

I would walk around in athletic shorts and a sports bra all day but I feel like it would get me a few funny looks on the school run...

Devilsmommy · 01/10/2023 21:33

What about low waist trousers if you don't like things sat on your waist? I don't wear high waist for this exact reason, I never feel comfortable

Purpleavocado · 01/10/2023 21:34

I'm wearing the M&S unisex kids joggers in age 13 to 14 - I'm an 8 to 10. They have a loose waist you can tighten and are really comfortable. I'm only 5'3 though and would probably be too short on someone taller.

Something with soft bamboo fabric?

Or more dungarees?

Jumperhermit · 01/10/2023 23:19

Following with interest as I have sensory processing disorder and find the same with clothes. I love dungarees. I buy a lot from Toast as their sizing tends to be oversized.
I actually buy maternity harem bottoms from Seraphine for PJ/lounge trousers as they have a lovely wide waist band and don’t dig in.

LakesideFrogHotel · 02/10/2023 01:36

Thanks everyone, glad to know I am not alone too.

I love harems and loose yoga pants but i dont think they translate well to winter, just can't see them with my wool coat. I have enjoyed them in early autumn though with docs and a loose fine knit top.
I would love some wool trousers with a flat waist but it seems impossible!
Toast do nice loose trousers but so much chunky elastic at the waist it puts me right off. And some of them are described as mid rise but go most of the way up the models back Grin

It isn't so much about the fabric but the fit, if that makes sense? High waists are awful but even low waists feel restrictive. I need trousers that feel like my PJ's but for winter!

Alexandra Stedman on Instagram might be worth a look, she tends to review a lot of loose, flowing skirts and dresses in quite plain patterns.

NotReallySureWhatToThink · 02/10/2023 06:43

M&S flexifit leggings. Like ghost leggings. So blooming comfy!!

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 02/10/2023 06:53

If you're willing to give leggings another go I'd recommend these ones. They are high waisted and very soft . In winter I wear them with dresses (tunics or knitted) or long line vests with a jumper or thick shirt on top.

Whats the sizing like on these please? I'm normally buy a 14 in M&S so I'm thinking the XL?

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 02/10/2023 07:10

@swimona I'm a size 16/18 and I get the L/XL which fit great(even at my heaviest), so for you I'd say S/M. If you scroll down there is a size chart with height and weight(very small writing though) so you can have a look at that.

Sadik · 02/10/2023 07:13

I was going to suggest dungarees but see you already wear them.

Forgotten tribes do lots of soft flowy clothing - these warm high crotch harems might be comfy? I can't see on these specifically but they usually have very wide soft elasticated waistbands.

99% of the time I wear the same very small pool of clothing for exactly this reason - I love dressing up but most things aren't comfortable. I have just bought a vintage cotton maxi dress which is my new favourite party item - it's structured enough not to be annoying & clingy, elbow length sleeves so not irritating around the wrist, & doesn't need anything underneath (hate tights). It's also been home made by someone so no labels & the seams are wonderfully flat.
Thankfully my DD is crafty, so she makes me jumpers that meet my ridiculous criteria, so at least I'm always warm!

Sweaty Betty have some things that could be passed off as not athleisure, especially if you get them in black or navy, and all of it feels like pyjamas.

fruitpastille · 02/10/2023 07:23

If you like dungarees and you don't mind tights, what about a pinafore style dress for winter?

TreesWelliesKnees · 02/10/2023 07:34

My favourite time of day is when I can get undressed and into my pyjamas. I found an online shop called Olive. Lots of loose shapes, lots of linen, generally quite plain but some gingham. They seem to be one size so would be large on you, but they look so comfy and I like the oversized look anyway.

Branleuse · 02/10/2023 08:20

I think lots of bamboo type Jersey. Stuff that flows. Lagenlook, gudrun sjodren maybe?
I think that your base layers/ underwear cam make all the difference to your comfort, along with your shoes

ShangPie · 02/10/2023 09:34

Curveball suggestion - get your dream winter trousers made! Pick out some soft wool fabric, then take it to an alterations place and ask them to make a copy of your pyjama bottoms in that fabric. (This assumes you have access to a fabric shop and a good tailor / alteration shop)

Alternatively, have a look at Uniqlo drawstring trousers. They do this style in cotton / linen in the summer and a warmer fabric in the winter. They also have a lot of wide waistband trousers that may be worth a try

LakesideFrogHotel · 02/10/2023 14:10

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I knew this would be difficult as I will look like an ungrateful wretch, but I am so weirdly specific about what I want that I dare say it is impossible to achieve.
Drawstrings would bunch at the waist and feel irritating. My PJ's have a very slack waist/hip which is quite flat to the body and I will have them altered if not Grin
I have 3 cotton pairs from White Company that have been on rotation since 2019. I am terrified of them falling apart, but it is a testament to their quality that they have been worn and washed weekly since then and are still almost new.

I have made a couple of drawings on my ipad of my dream designs. I can't draw very well but I do paint, lol, so will post them here with one of my paintings which suggest my preferred colour palettes.
I honestly can't find any of these shapes in the shops anywhere. I even trawl ebay and charity shops but no joy. There are slight variations from contemporary trends which make it difficult i think. Stuff like this was easily sourced in the 90's.

I thought it was just weird old me who feels like this, never used to bother me but know post menopause I hate anything restrictive at all, at home I just live in wide leg roll down waist yoga pants and a loose jumper, I do however love clothes so on the rare occasions I venture out I just put up with the uncomfortable feeling and rip them off soon as I get home.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 02/10/2023 15:49

Could you try maternity trousers/ leggings?
No one would know if you cut labels out
Maybe preowned as they would be even softer( VGC of course) from Vinted
The over bump style generally have soft thicker waistbands

LakesideFrogHotel · 02/10/2023 16:37

Now maternity trousers sound interesting, but I bet i couldn't find the in wool, from the likes of Toast. There are so few brands that do a maternity line, especially at the natural fabrics end of the scale.

I thought it was worth looking around for
There are upper end( to me!) brands like Seraphine?
