Anyone else love this style/aesthetic?

I know brands such as Oska, Nygårdsanna and Studio Nicholson offer similar, but I struggle to locate such items in the UK. I certainly can't afford to pay higher end prices but can afford the occasional bit from the Toast/Howell end of the price scale.

I have seen similar threads here in the past where people insist that you have to be 6 foot tall and shapeless to carry this style off, but I strongly disagree, since so many (perhaps the majority) of the inspiration images show Japanese women, or short and curvy women looking fantastic in it. Perhaps it is our western predilection for amazonian models representing the 'default' for all clothing styles? A matter of perception?

I am 5'4, so not petite, and have longer legs for my height. My body type is very similar to the Japanese ladies in these images across the internet, but I have no real idea how to pull it off - but would love to try! I am half way there, but never dive fully in Grin

Also, if this style appeals to you, I would love to know how you have your hair? I think how we wear our hair is integral to our overall sense of style, whether we invest ££ in it or prefer to go with the natural flow. We talk a lot about different aesthetics in S&B but rarely discuss the hair when we talk about outfits, etc.

I suppose this is similar to the 'monty don as a woman' question, but maybe a bit less less boxy/utilitarian and more silky/fluid?

@ViolaCello there's a book called " the Bloomsbury Look" which you might enjoy. Slightly tangential, but I'm also drawn to that 'layered' aesthetic in my home, and love looking at photographs of Charleston and the wonderful ephemera of homes like that of the artist mark hearld (And I also admire how his clothes!)
I think these sensibilities probably inform a lot of creative choices, whether in one's home or wardrobe.

@yogibutton This makes so much sense to me. I watch a lot of Japanese film and notice that the proportions are 'just so'. This is an excellent point and potentially the most important in terms of pulling it off.

@JaneHelier Oh I do have that book! I love the whole era. I should like Vanessa Bell to have created my home interiors.

Ah, perhaps it’s the ‘just so’ element that I find myself stepping back from. Even though I’m full of envy when I meet very perfectly turned out people, I know my own inclination is towards the haphazard and imperfect. (I’m reluctant to refer to the term wabi-sabi for fear of using it wrongly - but that.) I’m scrupulous and painstaking with laundry and ironing - but I don’t mind if my sleeves are a bit long or a colour is a bit off. Essentially I don’t want it to look as if I actually care much about getting dressed …

Isn't it this idea that there should be a bit of ugliness in an outfit for it to look beautiful. If everything is too coordinated, and in all very complimentary colours, it can look very bleugh

However, I stand by my point about where the trousers end. Perhaps because most end at the wrong point for me. But yes, looking like you are wearing the clothes than the other way around and a certain carelessness about it is important.

hence, OP, your question about hair. I just wear the hair I got, loose crazy curls, which I don't do anything with. Also, re: budgetary concerns; Studio Nicholson has good sample sales [if you can get to London]

Love it. Met a beautiful woman in her twenties with long ash blonde hair rocking this look. Would not work for me! Think it works best with natural beauty and low make up

I have never been at peace with my hair. In my opinion it often ruins everything and I have no idea what to do with it, maybe a thread of it's own should suffice, lol.
It is growing long now, a mid to dark blonde, which I always used to wear blowdried straight. At the slightest whiff of 'environment' it changes, either frizzing up or looking dull. I had highlights for years but didn't like the damage (and mine were only done once per year). I am happy with my natural colour but the texture depresses me. It doesn't curl but it poofs out majestically in a fine mass of gravity defying madness. It is porous and temperamental.

I often wonder about going full on helena bonham carter and just whacking it up with claw clip into a wonky gibson girl nest. Or just embracing the fluffiness and to hell with it.
