Replacing cardigans - with what

I wear cardigans too often and I want something that will elevate my outfit to something more appropriate for going out/ going to work. Thoughts please and links please, please, please.

The problem with blazers is that you can’t wear a coat over them in colder weather and they often aren’t warm enough on their own.

IndianSummer78 · 19/09/2023 03:57

@irisretic you can if you buy a loose fitting coat and size up

By blazer does everyone just mean a jacket like a suit jacket? I thought a blazer was a specific cut and a school blazer is different again.

Goodness only knows what "blazer' means on here. There's a link earlier on to rather a nice short, tailored and fitted jacket by Cos , which Cos call a "cropped jacket" but has been labelled by the poster as a "cropped blazer"

"Blazer" to me means exactly the sort of straight up and down jacket worn by amongst others children at private schools, or Oxbridge rowers, or the umpires at Wimbledon and whilst distinctive, purpose serving and perfectly acceptable for those groups is generally not attractive on anyone else and doesn't go with everything.

Some jackets are also blazers but not all jackets are blazers.

I like this, but Worry that it might be worse than a cardi

Sorry, yes it is worse than a cardigan or a blazer.

There are cardigans and cardigans. Nothing wrong with cardigans.

Seddon · 19/09/2023 04:58

I used to love a cute short cardi but they've started looking off on me. Think it's because I'm a bit fatter and bustier than I used to be so the overall look is a bit matronly.

My alternatives are:
blazer (in theory - I bought one but haven't worn it yet!)
very light trench
long (e.g. knee or longer) merino cardis for the 'swish' described above
denim shirt
thin jumper

&OtherStories do really nice wrap cardigans that look a little more elevated but are still very comfy.

PuppyMonkey · 19/09/2023 08:29

I don’t get the blazer suggestions. Cardigans and blazers do completely different jobs imho. You can’t snuggle up in front of a roaring fire in a cosy blazer.Grin

I had a dress and jacket for a wedding but wanted a less formal look to wear over the dress. I discovered Wallis do some lovely ones

Thanks for all the advice.
@Seddon, that's it for me too! I have a huge chest and sometimes think that cardigans just amplify it.
@PuppyMonkey, and that's the issue. I love my cardis for nights in snuggled up but when I go out with friends I feel underdressed. I do like some of these Chanel cardigans/jackets but, again, I am not sure how they would work with my chest.

This is gorgeous and a great bridge between a cardigan and a jacket, but am wondering about my enormous chest..

I always think a maxi cardigan adds oomph

or a Chanel type jacket but knitted rather than woven

WhoStoleYourHighHorse · 19/09/2023 08:52

Ohhh, this is nice.

I ♥️ cardies

Me too! I was just thinking this morning that it's time to restock the cardigans for this winter.

Any recommendations (long and short cardies) gratefully received!

ActDottie · 19/09/2023 09:35

A blazer?
A more formal jumper?

Summerslimtime · 19/09/2023 09:39

I'm thinking this too. I'm sure I just look like a fat bird trying to hide my body. I'm always cold though. Thinking of just buying new ones.

That one is perfect. Try it on to see how it fits - I’m sure it will be the same as a cardigan in terms of your chest.

CattingAbout · 19/09/2023 09:52

Depends what the rest of the outfit is? I'm a fan of the chunky cardigan and tights/boots with a smart dress look, even though its not that fashionable any more.

You will struggle to make a cardigan smart if worn with trousers though.

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 19/09/2023 10:21

@NatashaDancing Apologies for the blazer/ jacket confusion!

DRS1970 · 19/09/2023 10:26

Gillets, waistcoats, pullovers, jackets, fleeces, blazers, loose shirts and blouses, nothing...

ilovemydogmore · 19/09/2023 11:24

Massimo Dutti also a great place for smart knits

justasking111 · 19/09/2023 11:29

I bought a coatigan last winter because energy costs were so high a lot of venues were cutting back on heating. It was a godsend.

WhoStoleYourHighHorse · 19/09/2023 11:55

This thread is making me very happy! I love my cardis, don't want to be without them ... just want to be a bit more pulled together from time to time.
