Yellow teeth

Has anyone used anything that has actually whitened teeth? I can’t afford to get them whitened at the dentist. Is there any off the shelf product that helps a little bit? Or are they all useless and I’m destined to have yellow teeth?

I don’t have red wine or tea or coffee or smoke or sweets. I clean with an electric toothbrush and floss. I just seem to be stuck with horrid teeth.

Tried most of them. None of them do anything for me. Think I'm going to have to save up and get something done at the dentist.

I had someone bring back some crest white strips from America for me (I think you can buy them on Amazon US and have them sent here but it’s pricy) and they made a huge difference to my teeth. I went from a definite yellow to a creamy white. I’m going to do them every 6 months now and consider it worth paying the inflated import prices.

It’s so depressing, it’s so embarrassing

Okay this sounds positive. I don’t want gleaming white teeth, I would just love to take some of the yellowing away. Might be worth a try…are they dangerous?

I have a scale and polish every 3 months (for other reasons not because of discoloured teeth) and use a whitening toothpaste, it all seems to help keep my teeth white (and I drink a lot of coke).

I can’t afford that sadly. Which toothpaste do you use please? Thanks

I don’t think they’re dangerous, they’re higher levels of hydrogen peroxide than are allowed over here but given that Americans, who seem to use them religiously, are considered to have much better teeth than we Brits I’d say they’re probably safe. The packaging said they can cause a bit of sensitivity but I didn’t notice any at all. The taste wasn’t the best, but at 30 minutes a day I could cope with it.

Crest Strips have been ok for me. I don't want very white just whiter.

broccolibush · 17/09/2023 17:30

I didn’t take progress photos but here’s a before and a few months after. I think the difference is notable.

Don't the crest strips make your teeth painful for ages?

TheOldCrone · 17/09/2023 17:42

Can someone link the crest strips please? I can’t seem to find on eBay or Amazon

Purple reveal toothpaste by colgate is really good but it takes a while to see an improvement. It was a good few weeks before I noticed a difference.

broccolibush · 17/09/2023 17:44

Here you go @TheOldCrone - not sure what the difference is between each kind but is probably worth looking through reviews for different types. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=crest+whitening+strips&crid=PP0Y2VBAQH1R&sprefix=Crest+whit%2Caps%2C263&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_10

@ChristmasCrumpet I had no pain at all when I did mine, either during or afterwards, and I don’t have the most amazingly robust teeth (prone to sensitivity, my vanity won out)

hdbs17 · 17/09/2023 17:48

@broccolibush

Just thought I'd point out that the US have a lower rating of dental care than we do, they just care more about having perfect looking teeth than having healthy teeth.

In the top 10 countries of oral health, UK are 4th and US 9th.

broccolibush · 17/09/2023 17:51

@hdbs17 I did not know that. Thank you. Slightly concerning that we’re so high with the lack of available affordable treatment for many (probably more concerning that others lag behind) but thanks for the stat.

Colgate Instant Relief Whitening, currently using Sensodyne Rapid Relief Whitening though. But even a scale and polish twice a year would help.

Iguanas369 · 17/09/2023 17:58

Crest white strips work brilliantly - had lots of comments about my teeth looking white afterwards! They can make your teeth sensitive if you over use them though.

Lollygaggle · 17/09/2023 18:06

Bear in mind it is illegal to sell crest strips in the U.K. or Europe because they have a higher level of hydrogen peroxide than is legal.

Therefore anyone importing them into the U.K. is not doing so using legitimate channels and is knowingly breaking the law. Hence the large number of counterfeit and out of date strips.

It is up to you to decide if you trust someone knowingly breaking the law to provide something you are going to put inside your body.

My children have a yellow colour to their teeth as do I. I’ve spoken to a couple of dentists about it and they’ve told me the colour is natural, not due to staining, and the only thing that will help is getting them professionally whitened. Some people do have more of a yellow tinge to their teeth. It’s just hard that lots of people seemingly have gleamingly white teeth but this often isn’t a natural whiteness

WhatACluster · 17/09/2023 21:03

I’ve tried just about everything going and absolutely nothing works - it’s all a big con due to legislation they can’t put anything in the toothpaste (I want to say more than 0.6 peroxide but it’s been a while since I did my research) to actually whiten them.

my dentist has quoted £317 for teeth whitening and is allowing me to pay in 4 monthly instalments, which makes it a lot more affordable.

I was advised not to use the crest teeth whitening strips but I know people have had a lot of success with them, I’ve was put off by a dentist on mumsnet again that was a while ago.

David98uk · 17/09/2023 21:19

When im in the US i always stock up on crest whitening mouthwash. It has peroxide in it and it works.

Peroxide is not allowed in over the counter mouthwash here. UK regulation

ChishiyaBat · 17/09/2023 21:51

I'm a smoker and a black coffee addict, when mine are bad I just put a teaspoon of bicarb or baking powder on a saucer and then squeeze a fresh lemon onto it until it is a paste, then use the paste on my toothbrush, I used to fo it once a week, but now I only do it when I can be bothered. It does work though.

ididntthough · 17/09/2023 22:03

You can buy the stuff the dentist will give you online - you just need to have the trays or some kind of retainer to put it in while you sleep.
mine uses Polanight or Boutique 10% and it’s about £60 online for 8 syringes; just find a well reviewed seller and follow instructions online for how to apply it. Don’t be tempted to buy a stronger concentration as it can sensitise your teeth pretty fast.
