Anyone else find hair salons incredibly stressful?

Septembergirl20 · 15/09/2023 13:20

I'm looking for a mobile stylist both due to price increases and also just feeling more comfortable having my hair done at home. The last few stylists I've had haven't been great and it's kinda put me off wanting to go to a regular salon again. Anyone else just find the hairdresser stressful and put off going as long as possible?

I have a mobile hairdresser as the salons were just so noisy as four or five hairdressers competed to be heard as they chatted over the blast of the hairdryers. It was horrible.

I never found it relaxing but it certainly is now.

i used to and I moved around a lot as I couldn’t find one I was comfortable with. However I now have one of the best I have been to, there’s only a couple of people cutting etc and they don’t fit in clients around you, so when your getting your hair dyed they aren’t doing someone else. It’s so calm and she doesn’t make you feel awkward if you’re not having a chatty day etc. wouldn’t go anywhere else now

OssieShowman · 15/09/2023 13:29

I couldn’t stand the gossipy hairdressers in salon. And calling everyone, babe, hun. I found a nice home salon, and enjoy getting hair done and a nice chat. More relaxing

hdbs17 · 15/09/2023 13:40

I absolutely loathe the hair salon and can think of nothing worse than sitting in an uncomfortable chair for hours, listening to people shouting over hairdryers, making small talk and the constant worry that your stylist has forgotten about you whilst they've started someone else's hair.

I'd actually rather have a root canal.

I just don't bother anymore - I dye and cut my own hair.

GloomySkies · 15/09/2023 14:00

I hate salons. The noise, the inane chitchat that you can't make out, the heat, staring at my own face in the mirrors, the way some hairdressers sneer at you for not having proper hairdresser language to describe what you want. I discovered an absolute angel of a mobile hairdresser a few years ago and it had changed my life.

Phos · 15/09/2023 14:02

My salon is a lot. The ladies who work there are very sociable and loud. I usually don't cope with lots of conflicting noises but for some reason I'm ok there, if anything it's annoying more than stressful. I can see why some people wouldn't like it. I usually focus on the person doing my hair and when I'm waiting for colour to take or something I read. Luckily my stylist is good and can tell if I want to talk or not. I have multicoloured under lights so changing salons would be the stress for me, I feel like I need people who know what they are doing.

HeddaGarbled · 15/09/2023 14:15

I like those slightly old-fashioned salons you find in between the take-away pizza place and off-licence in residential areas. They tend to be much more homely.

ShadyPaws · 15/09/2023 14:23

Not now I have a nice hairdresser! There's only me in the salon, there's a dog, plenty of hot drinks and no sinks that hurt my neck. And he's a curly hair specialist. Bliss

This is it, you get the vibes

A little bit. Mine is very softly-spoken, and my hearing is bad especially when there’s background noise, and it gets too embarrassing to keep saying I can’t hear her so I revert to smiling and nodding, and then look weird when I don’t reply to questions properly. Mostly though I just find it really boring.

WeightoftheWorld · 15/09/2023 14:37

Yes also hate it. But I am autistic so no surprise there...the noises, lights, smells, being touched, strangers so close to you, excruciating small talk etc etc. No thank you. Luckily a local family friend is a trained hair dresser so I just get her give me the occasional dry cut at her house nowadays.

strugglingwithlife · 15/09/2023 20:43

No. I go to the hair salon weekly

NancyJoan · 15/09/2023 20:46

No, I love it. I’ve been to my hairdresser for years, we chat which he puts the colour on, then he leaves me to my book/laptop and then tells me what he’s cooking for dinner/what he’s seen at the theatre etc while he washes then cuts. I would hate to have my hair done at home, it wouldn’t feel relaxing at all. But, you do you! It will probably be far, far cheaper.

Is he my stylist?… Sounds similar! Only one client at a time. All products are natural. He’s actually an interesting person the talk to

StoneTheCrone · 15/09/2023 20:57

Agreed. The inane chatter, the shouting, the hairdryers, the blaring music. Awful. Ive been with mine for 15 years after trying all the others in town.

Its why i keep my hair long with natural highlights. I only go four times a year. I couldnt face going in for a cut and colour every six weeks.

Either there's a few of them or we all go to the same one!

Binglebong · 15/09/2023 21:18

Ýep, hate it. Went for the first time in years recently to one of these cheap places where you don't book - £15 for a restyle. No basin, no drying, - they spray your hair damp and cut. Lovely and quiet and I'm delighted by the result and even with waiting I was out in half an hour.

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 15/09/2023 21:19

I was thinking of posting something like this earlier this week after I had a hair appointment. I thought I was just weird.

I hate staring at myself in the mirror, I'm short so never reach the bar thing for your feet so I'm sat like a child swinging my legs. I hate the bullshit chatting, it's either loud and hectic or really quiet. My hair is curls, so i usually go for a wet cut, but it drys quite frizzy and I never seem to get a finished style.

My BIL sister used to cut my hair from when I was younger, she knew just what to say and do and i was always happy with the outcome, but unfortunately we lost her many years ago and since then I've never found someone I'm comfortable with.

ChevyCamaro · 15/09/2023 21:25

Oh yes. That's why I haven't been for years. I just cut my own hair ( it's long and wavy). Funnily enough I get loads of compliments about my hair! I am diligent about proper conditioning though. Never going to a hairdresser again.

Iguanas369 · 15/09/2023 21:28

I love the hairdressers but for some reason I always feel ill! Think it's because it's so hot with all the hairdryers going and the plasticy gown they make you wear!

Bunnyhair · 15/09/2023 21:44

I’m so glad to learn that others have this experience! I hate it! I can never hear what the stylist is saying over all the hairdryer noise, so I end up lip reading in the mirror and making my best guess, resulting in conducting half of an entirely different conversation from the one they’re trying to have, and everyone feeling awkward and confused.

I also have crap hair that can’t be meaningfully improved upon, so I never leave the salon with that confident new hairdo feeling people talk about - just itchy hair clippings all down my neck and a deep sense of weariness.

SM4713 · 15/09/2023 21:49

I have no noise sensitivity issues, but I hate multiple things about it. Years ago I used to get a colour done, but it felt like such a waste of time sitting there for half a day. I hate the back ground chatter and idle chit chat about nothing.

I wear glasses, but get asked to take them off for the wash/cut etc. I then feel disorientated and can't see anything in the distance clearly. I therefore avoid looking in the mirror or looking about for fear of staring at someone and not realising. I always forget to wear my contacts! I then feel the cost is always excessive. Its just not enjoyable at all.

keffie12 · 15/09/2023 21:56

I've been with my hairdresser 20 years since she was in training. Although she is self-employed, she has and does work in what I would call high standard hair and beauty salons, so the standard of customer services is exemplary.

Much care is taken with the experience given in the salon. I love the hair salon she works in and the service given in it.

If my hairdresser went mobile, I would have her mobile wise. I wouldn't change my hairdresser

Septembergirl20 · 15/09/2023 22:22

Just came back to this thread now and I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets stressed out at the hairdresser. @ShadyPaws oh wow I love the look of that salon, looks so relaxing

I would genuinely rather go to the dentist.
