Anyone else find hair salons incredibly stressful?

I'm looking for a mobile stylist both due to price increases and also just feeling more comfortable having my hair done at home. The last few stylists I've had haven't been great and it's kinda put me off wanting to go to a regular salon again. Anyone else just find the hairdresser stressful and put off going as long as possible?

Either there's a few of them or we all go to the same one!

I have the best of both worlds - top rated hairdresser by any standard who set up a salon in his garden at home which is used to see clients on his days off. I often go on a Sunday. It’s set up properly with a “back wash” and air con etc but he only has one client at a time. Occasionally his little dog pays us a call. He’s still pretty expensive but it’s cheaper than at the salon. ( I would still see him at the salon if I had to… I don’t mind it. No-one has ever called me hun in my life).

I used to hate it to, as someone else said, I'd rather go to the dentist. Luckily, I made friends with a hairdresser at the school gate, and now I just go to hers and she cuts it perfectly.

We have a hairdresser who works from home in our village as well @Divebar2021.
She has a proper set up and has only one client at a time. I don't use her as I am happy with my hairdresser, but my friend does and her hair always looks good.

Maybe the hairdresser haters can post on social media to ask if they have such a facility on their doorstep.

I tried home hairdressers but hate not having the mirror to see what they're doing!

I have one of those wavy IKEA mirrors that is not fixed to the wall. I just move it into the dining room where I get my hair done and move it back into the hall when hair is finished and hairdresser has gone.

I don't like not having a mirror to look into either.

I think they are for young people. I do not want a pierced, pink haired gen z-er doing my 50 year old barnet and trying to talk to me about ‘if I’m having a nice day’ or ‘what are you doing this evening?’

Don’t get me wrong, I like ‘youngsters’ only I dint want to be at the mercy of their lack of life experience.

also it’s terrible value. The minimum I can pay for a haircut is £45 even if I just want an inch lobbed off the bottom. My son gets a skin/taper fade creation for £20. It’s really sexist.

I do believe there is a gap in the market for a low fuss unisex hairdresser but I guess that’s super cuts.

That is utter nonsense. You must be going into the wrong salons. If anything, the super trendy wouldn't be going to my hairdresser.

Oh yes. That's why I haven't been for years. I just cut my own hair ( it's long and wavy). Funnily enough I get loads of compliments about my hair! I am diligent about proper conditioning though. Never going to a hairdresser again.

Me too! Started cutting my own long hair and colouring it and had loads of compliments.
Will never visit a hairdresser again!

I used to go to a small salon that hit the big time and expanded to a new premises and 20 or 30 stylists, it was awful with that many hair dryers running simultaneously! Found a small salon operating out of a wooden cabin behind a shop and there are only ever one or two stylists working at a time. So small salons do exist if you don’t find a home hairdresser

My salon has a high proportion of young, tattooed people of both sexes with elaborate hair as stylists, and they’re a total delight to talk to — and I’m 51 and dour in demeanour. I think it’s the actual experience of having my hair done I don’t like — everyone involved is great.

Turquioseblue · 16/09/2023 10:59

I thought it was only me! Yes I detest the small talk, the bright lights and noise... I leave it as long as possible between visits.
For a while I found a woman hairdresser in a men's barber shop who did take women clients, that was so much better and cheaper, but I had to move away from the area.
I look at all the women who clearly love getting their hair and nails done and I don't understand it! I'd rather swallow razor blades.

RampantIvy · 16/09/2023 11:09

Surely, a hairdresser would need good lighting to be able to make a great job of colouring, cutting and styling hair, so I think the objection to bright lights is unreasonable.

StoneTheCrone · 16/09/2023 14:21

I think they need to re-think their music choices. Calming/chilled spa music would be much better.

A lot of salons could benefit from acoustic design too, such as cushions, throws, more sound-absorbing floors, acoustic wall hangings and barriers etc..

It would also be great to have some privacy using cubicles or at the very least, big pot plants or screens so you dint feel like you're in a supermarket.

How about headlamps?

Only joking.

(Not really).

My previous hairdresser was rushing like mad during one appointment and accidently stabbed me in the cheek with the end of the comb. It really hurt, but I just played it down as she was a bit mortified. But after that incident I stopped seeing her. New one is so calm and slow.

givemeasunnyday · 17/09/2023 07:49

No, I love going to a salon and getting my hair cut - would do it every week if I could.
