do I just buy GHD ?

I have recently started to grow my v short bob into a slightly longer look and now need to get some decent straighteners to help keep it looking sleek and shiny especially in between washes.
Do I need to pay for GHD or can I get something cheaper ?

Would love some recommendations from people who use them regularly !

Thanks

I swear by GHDs or Cloud 9 - i replaced my old GHDs but they still work around 16 years later, i just wanted something newer

Cloud 9 have temp control which is better if you have fine/coarse hair

bubbletubble · 12/09/2023 21:11

GHD's! Had mine for about 15 years and nothing comes close!

redmalt · 12/09/2023 21:18

Ghds 100% had mine for 6 years and still going strong

abyssofwoah · 12/09/2023 21:25

I’ve recently bought a set of Diva straighteners and they’re definitely as good or better than my GHDs were when they were new, although they are cheaper. I got them on the recommendation of my stylist who says she’ll never go back - apparently lots of stylists use them because the coating on the plates lasts a lot longer than GHDs.

Cloud 9!

Pattygonia · 12/09/2023 22:10

I had some ghds which were a gift from my dm - they were fantastic but eventually (after years!) they stopped working. I couldn’t afford to replace them but had heard Remington Pearl ones were good - I’ve now had the Remington ones for 5 years and they are fantastic too - would def choose them again over ghds. Ghds are possibly very slightly better but the difference isn’t worth the price to me - I appreciate everyone’s hair is different so other people will have different opinions (my hair is quite thick and naturally v straight - I use straighteners to put in waves and curls )

I've had my GHD's for about 13 years now. I recommend them. Not sure if they're still made in the same way as they were then though, lots of things have reduced quality recently.

Fluffyowl00 · 12/09/2023 22:17

Yup. 13 years and counting. With frizzy hair.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 12/09/2023 22:20

GHDS!! worth every penny, like others I have had mine for years. I have tried others but none come close. I do however have very thick and frizzy hair.

Olivia199 · 12/09/2023 22:34

Another GHD fan here. It's probably the only thing I wouldn't replace with something different when the time comes. I remember balking at the price tag 12 years ago, but I wouldn't be without them and they're still going very strong! Well worth the money on longevity and performance.

Ladybaga · 12/09/2023 22:40

I have used ghds for years but switched to the l'oreal steampod a few months back and havent picked up my ghds since. I find them a lot kinder to my hair and much quicker.

Tailfeather · 12/09/2023 22:43

I prefer Cloud 9.

timefornewme2023 · 12/09/2023 22:46

Thanks all - as I suspected most of you with
GHD are brand loyal
I am looking at all the others too.

It's a bit overwhelming as a novice.

My hair is actually fine and quite straight so hopefully not too much of a challenge !

I don't think GHDs are as good as they used to be. I have cloud 9s now and they are great, make my hair so glossy.

Bunnyannesummers · 12/09/2023 23:20

I really like my GHDs, but not sure I’d repurchase. My first pair lasted a good decade and were amazing until they died. My current pair are maybe seven years old, but they’re showing their age more than the first set

Beachlovingirl · 13/09/2023 08:32

I have had both ghds and cloud 9 and find them very similar and use mine for straightening and also for curling. The ghds have more flexibility in the joint so imagine the two parts sandwiched together with the ghds you can move them a bit side to side and this is supposed to give a better curl - not sure if this is true though.
the ghds and cloud 9s last ages in my experience so cost per use it’s good value for money.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 13/09/2023 12:46

As far as I know, when GHD was sold they moved production to somewhere cheaper and obviously that had an effect on quality so they no longer last as long as they used to. I had a set for a good 10 years of almost daily use but I dropped them once too often and they died. The next set only lasted a few years before they just stopped working. The guy who originally owned GHD now owns Cloud9 and this is the brand I'd recommend. But as with everything, technology has improved so there are other brands that are cheaper and still do a really good job so of course it's wise to take your budget into account as well!

VeloVixen · 13/09/2023 12:48

I have ghd (old and new style) and cloud 9 and much prefer the cloud 9.

Dreemhouse · 13/09/2023 12:50

I have always had GHDs and they are very good. But I bought DM some Cloud 9s and they are so much better. I can’t justify buying myself any until my current GHDs die (still going strong after 8 years!) but I won’t replace them with GHDs, I’ll get Cloud 9s

marymungoNminge · 13/09/2023 12:52

I've found my cloud 9s leagues above GHDs

timefornewme2023 · 13/09/2023 12:58

Thanks for the new replies will definitely look at cloud 9 - though due to another thread I have also been looking at the GHD Duet !

I am actually wondering whether I can go cheaper this time while I work out whether I am going to keep going with longer hair or get it chopped off in frustration.

Does anyone have any lower budget recommendations my hair is fine, straight and not even chin length so I don't think I need the best of the best !

Yes I agree with this. The quality of GHDs used to be second to none and they'd last a ridiculous amount of time, not the case now. I believe Cloud 9 was brought or is owned by the people who made GHDs or something? Either way they're brilliant and I have tried a lot in the past.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/09/2023 13:05

I bought Cloud 9 instead of GHD and regret not going with GHD. I always had them previously but had heard good things about Cloud 9 so thought that would be the better choice. I definitely regret not sticking with GHD and can't do much until they conk out!

My DM uses Babyliss Platinum Diamond and loves them.
