Clark’s - when did it get so expensive ?

DustyLee123 · 12/09/2023 17:45

Popped into Clark’s yesterday to have a quick look at some Chelsea boots. No wonder the shop was empty, the simple pair I looked at was £120 !!!
I like Clark’s as I think they last well, but I don’t like them that much, I’ll be going elsewhere.

Clarks has always been expensive!

gogomoto · 12/09/2023 17:54

They were £70 15 years ago. Shoes are expensive if leather. Try the outlet store for cheaper prices

AmilyChestnut · 12/09/2023 17:54

Clarks have some great sales, and often. They also have an outlet website.

I bought some loafers with 75% off in my local store recently, and I liked them so much I bought the same again for the same price, different colour.

I think they're great.

EmmaEmerald · 12/09/2023 18:00

Wondering same OP

there's one in the high street and the difference in prices over two years is massive, not sure where to try next for sort of c£50 ankle boots.

Sniffmyfingers · 12/09/2023 18:04

Ever since decimalisation.

confusedlots · 12/09/2023 18:04

I've stopped buying the kids school shoes there as they are now around £50 each, and they usually need a second pair later in the school year too. I got them in M&S this year for around £30 each instead

thatone · 12/09/2023 18:06

I tend to order from Clarks Outlet as I find their shoes really comfy but it is a pain that I can't try them on. You are right that actual stores are too expensive and the stores near me also have a very limited range.

IVFthenPERI · 12/09/2023 18:06

4 year old twins here and 2 pairs of shoes from Clark’s recently cost £90! It’s absolutely shocking. I do get 10% off with twins trust and they do regular 20% off weekends but it’s still horrific

thedevilinablackdress · 12/09/2023 19:29

Clarks was always seen as an expensive(ish) shop when I was a child. When did it become cheap is the question for me!

thedevilinablackdress · 12/09/2023 19:30

(Answer - probably when they moved manufacturing overseas)

Pebbles16 · 12/09/2023 19:32

If you want decent, leather and reasonably ethical shoes then you have to pay for that. If you want tat shoes that don't last and probably had some unethical production then you will pay less

BlooDeBloop · 12/09/2023 19:33

All my Clarks were picked up in second hand shops. Just bought a lovely pair of black flats for £3.

They were £35 a pair when DD was little.

She's 31 this year.

Jeannie88 · 12/09/2023 19:37

Vinted, great for pre loved shoes, well for DC as they last forever at a fraction of the price! Anti bac, air, they always wear socks...perfect xx

Alpacasmum · 12/09/2023 19:37

Made in China

greengreengrass25 · 12/09/2023 19:58

@NeverDropYourMooncup

Yes I was thinking the same DD is coming up to 30

Xmasbaby11 · 12/09/2023 20:01

I feel like they have always been expensive. The ones I've bought for me and dc have lasted amazing well and I try to get their school shoes from there. We've tried several other shops and they all literally fell apart within a few months: M and S, Next, Sainsburys. I find Clarks last a full year.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/09/2023 20:02

I agree op. It has recently increased in price and the prices do not reflect the items worth I don't think.
I'm not buying from them anytime soon

Privatelyliving · 12/09/2023 20:19

The difference between cheap and good quality shoes is huge, both in terms of quality and cost. You can get boots cheaper than £120 but they will be cheap boots. To get good leather boots elsewhere you're looking at £200+ .

For me Clarks are the only halfway house, good enough to last and be comfortable, without being as expensive as really good shoes.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 12/09/2023 21:46

I have bought four pairs of Clarks shoes and boots on Vinted in the past month. I have cleaned them, rubbed them with leather cream, and sprayed them with that protectant. I got the heels on the boots replaced. None cost over £20 including postage, although the new heels did cost as much as the boots themselves.

They all fit beautifully and they're going to last years. They're not trendy in the first place so they won't go out of style.

I'm sick of cheap tat and I'm going to stop buying it.

liveforsummer · 12/09/2023 21:48

Clarks are bought either on sale or on eBay/Vinted because although they are decent they are and have always been too expensive full price

TheOGCCL · 12/09/2023 22:17

I agree prices have noticeably risen in Clarks over the last couple of years. I usually buy with a 20% off deal (student discount if nothing else on offer) but it's not unusual to see boots for £100+ and that didn't used to be the case.

I'd probably prefer them to maintain the quality and keep the price as we all need to buy less but better (not really possible with growing feet though). They do last well with a bit of care, reheeling etc.

I do think they are in danger of doing that thing where no one pays full price anyway which devalues the brand in the end.

TeddySidPippy · 02/04/2024 10:55

Our Clarks has just closed, and I predicted it would. Always empty and shoes creeping up to £100 or more.

BestIsWest · 02/04/2024 11:23

We don’t have one locally now but they were never cheap. Good sales though.

Darklane · 02/04/2024 12:53

Be careful with the outlet stores. I used to regularly buy from their Kendal factory outlet. Almost all the pairs I bought the soles just disintegrated, very embarrassing when you’re walking out & about & leaving a trail behind you.
