Sitting opp younger woman on bus with the brushed back dark brown eyebrows. Did no one tell her it looks a bit Joan Crawford and slightly mad?! Lovely white purple floral midi dress and gazelles without trainer socks I think?

not gonna lie I prob look awful with less sleep lol 😂

What have you seen good or bad out and about?

The prevalent style is very much wide cargo trousers and tiny crop tops. Which is not good news for those of us with a less than perfect midriff. Most women are still wearing prairie floral dresses and trainers, regardless of that John Lewis buyer memo! Surprised at the number of people wearing jeans, despite it being very hot these days.

I am hoping against hope for the milkmaid dresses with big puffy sleeves to die, but I don't think they will. So unflattering on most.

JustKen · 06/09/2023 08:44

A lor of older women are wearing sackcloths in this heat. Or they look like sackcloths. Very unflattering.

Agree the milkmaid look can do one.

My teenager is wearing a classic white t-shirt and bell-bottom brown cords today, with her Converse. No bellies are allowed to be visible. She's cutting up her t-shirts ("too long") but in a way she can just get away with the dress code.

I'm in the company uniform today. No fun.

The men have been wearing skinny shorts and leather sandals will a branded t-shirt or short sleeve shirt. Not many suits around in West London today.

SisterAgatha · 06/09/2023 08:46

I have seen at least three skirts worn over jeans. I don’t want this one back AT ALL.

SisterAgatha · 06/09/2023 08:47

I also saw a satin dress worn with enormous patent chunky heel ankle boots. Burgundy. Dress was yellow. I was in awe of her actually, I googled the dress but no luck. If that is autumn then bring it on.

Skirts over jeans??? How this even possible?

SisterAgatha · 06/09/2023 09:02

It was a huge thing in the 2000’s and was terrible. Truly terrible. When I say three skirts, I mean three occasions, not three actual skirts on one person haha

CharlotteRumpling · 06/09/2023 09:05

I see a number of women wearing long pleated skirts in really bright colours- orange, yellow- with a black top, and looking great. Also those satin midis are everywhere, but they seem less flattering on some. I think satin is a quite unforgiving fabric.

A long, loose cotton or linen dress (sack to you) is an excellent choice for hot weather. Far better than corduroy flared trousers.

CharlotteRumpling · 06/09/2023 09:21

I am wearing a long sleeveless cotton dress today, but semi fitted. With sandals. Bought overseas in Sri Lanka. The sack aesthetic looks terrible on me.

Won't be wearing corduroy until it cools down quite a bit! DD is wearing a massive pair of khaki trousers- 2 of her could get in- with a barely there halter top. Wish I could wear that!

We are wearing an airy linen dress, and prefer comfort over (your perception of) flattering in the heat.

The most stylish woman I saw in Amsterdam yesterday was wearing a long airy linen dress. I'm always surprised when MN posters think their teenagers are arbiters of style.

Omg, I had blocked this 'look' from my memory. I suppose all the fashion gets recycled, I am finding it odd seeing all of my teenage style trends coming back.

thedevilinablackdress · 06/09/2023 11:28

Agreed @NatashaDancing I may look at teen fashion with an 'Oh, interesting'. But I'm not going to think that I should start wearing crop tops or platform Crocs.

3 posts in. Some kind of new record, probably.

Floisme · 06/09/2023 11:46

I can understand wanting a fashion to die when it takes over to such an extent that you can't find an alternative - say if you like a fitted jacket and the shops are full of oversize. (My personal fear is the return of low rise jeans.) But I don't really get dreading a trend like skirt over trousers when it's something you can swerve quite easily if you so wish. Isn't the point to enjoy watching what everyone's wearing, and especially the variety, not just the things you personally like?

Anyway more reports please, age and sex immaterial. I'm hoping to get to London in the autumn and it's fun to get a preview.

ThewaytoAmarula · 06/09/2023 11:51

I actually quite like the skirt-over-trousers look. Reminds me of my 90s youth! It can be an interesting way of layering different colours and textures together. Comfortable too.

What I remember hating back in the late 90s though was seeing racks of sweaty black polyester trousers with a skirt layer in the same fabric already attached. Yuk. Hope that one doesn't make a comeback...

I must be blanking ageist posts now. Either that or I'm desensitised. I'm wearing a desperately uncool (style wise, not heat wise) M&S men's large cotton polo shirt and Uniqlo loose cotton trousers. I wouldn't wear corduroy in this heat if you paid me. (Actually I wouldn't wear it at all).

Yes, I don't get this! Teenagers often have great figures & young people are generally more in trend but many teenagers don't dress that well.

LunaNorth · 06/09/2023 12:07

Lots of blue and white striped oversized cotton shirts.

clowniform · 06/09/2023 12:11

30something in a sackcloth here (Véritécoeur). I haven't seen a milkmaid dress in months (nor even many ditsy floral midis). Most common are shirt dresses in a bold solid colour or graphic large print, widelegged trousers or bias slip skirts paired with slim tops (vests, halters, ribbed racerbacks and cropped tees). Linen blazers or oversized shirts as outer layers.
Agree with PP I have spotted a few cami dresses and sheer dresses layered over a tee and jeans (very '90s). Always had a soft spot for this look but not sure if I will commit to the jeans this time round (maybe just the tee).

Giftwithpurchase · 06/09/2023 12:20

I've also noticed lots more shorter/knee length dresses but with a voluminous silhouette and long sleeved - either understated muted colours or full on neon. Generally paired with flat form type sandals/DM style/fisherman sandals

Oh and everyone seems to own a skinny tan belt - generally Loewe or Valentino

Motnight · 06/09/2023 12:24

Ooh goody a thread criticising women's appearances. With special mention of older women! Yay!

We must be on different Tube lines! On the Jubilee and Northern, all I see are milkmaid dresses with huge puffy sleeves. Would love to see some nice shirt dresses in solids or geometrics.

I did see an woman in her 70s wearing a very flattering co-ord ( I think thats what it was) today. Black and white houndstooth shirt with matching trousers, red shoes, silver quiff like Tilda Swinton. It looked great on her. Probably would look like a clown in that.

Needmorelego · 06/09/2023 12:36

I am in an area of London with a large black population and many women wear fantastic loose fitting colourful dresses ("Moo Moo" style I think they are called).
I think they look both amazing and cool (cool as in not sweating like crazy). I'm always slightly jealous.
