Recommendations for a good facial moisturiser

Hi,

My skin seems to be changing as I get older. The skin on my chin especially is dry and rough (sand paper comes to mind) and I think I might need a new moisturiser.

I have been using number 7 hydro for years and love the feel but it doesn't seem to last and my skin drinks it in.

I wear make up most days and take it off with micellar water and cotton wool.

I am in my early 40s and my budget is probably up to £20 (not a lot I know)

Has anyone got any excellent recommendations?

Honestly so many products you could look at, Revolution x Sali Hughes range, CeraVe, to mention a couple; but you might find if you use a different type of cleanser as micellar water can be a bit harsh if used daily plus a serum before moisturiser would help too.

GettingStuffed · 30/08/2023 11:58

Try Nivea, it's not glamorous but does the job.

Pinktruffle · 30/08/2023 11:59

Byoma's range of moisturisers are excellent. They are all under £15 and available from Boots. I have eczema and have very dry skin, I use the moisturising rich cream, its excellent. If your skin needs an extra boost, get the hydrating serum too, it's beautiful.

GingerIsBest · 30/08/2023 12:14

As you get older it's not unusual for skin to change. You should be exfoliating more often now as well - I almost never exfoliated and now do it about twice a week at least.

Agree with micellar water - I don' think it's great as an everyday cleanser. I'd also look at a balm/oil based cleanser. I haven't tried it but the Sali Hughes one by Revolution is probably a good shout - her favourite cleanser is the same as mine (Pharmacy) and I think she tried to make hers a cheaper but similar version.

Brands I think are pretty good you can experiment with include:
Elf - all the beauty editors are raving about it currently and I have to say I am loving the day cream.
Cerave - hugely popular at the top end of your price range. I prefer th body product to the face products, but that's just me.
Neutrogena
Nivea - it's an oldy but a goody. It does the job.
Versed - supposed to be really good although I haven't tried it myself.

Thank you. I had no idea that micellar water could be to blame for drying my skin out. I will definitely look at a more oil based cleanser.

We're of a similar age.

I swapped to the Aldi Caviar day and night creams a few years back and find them to be amazing. This is one of several reviews praising it as a great option. Certainly doesn't feel like it's only £7.99 a pot.

'I tried the £7 Aldi cream that's a dupe of the £439 La Prairie moisturiser'

Alexandra Bullard tested out the £7 Aldi cream that's £432 cheaper than the original

I like cerave and the new no.7 future renew range. It's huge step up from the normal no7 range.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/08/2023 14:38

I use Cerave and the Aveeno Calm and restore night cream
They also do a cleanser which are very soothing as they contain oat complex
All within your price range
I'm 58 and am happy with my sensitive dry skin

inisfree · 30/08/2023 17:41

I'm using the "pure" range in M&S and very impressed. I'm mid 50's with dry and very fair skin if that helps

TheClitterati · 30/08/2023 17:47

I switched to oil based cleansiers a few years ago now and they are so much better.
at the moment I am using this one - its cheap, often on offer, not too scented and suits my 55yo skin, as well as that of my teen daughters. It comes with a muslin cloth, but I just use a flannel.

Petrarkanian · 30/08/2023 17:50

I use Lyonsleaf beauty balm as a cleanser and a moisturiser. I cannot recommend it enough.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 30/08/2023 17:52

I like the Superdrug hot cloth cleanser too @TheClitterati

It's often on offer so I rarely pay full price, just stock up. Been using it for a few years now.

I like using the little cloths when I'm on holiday, they're less bulky than flannels.

Soontobe60 · 30/08/2023 17:53

I use Lidl products! I use hot cloth cleanser, and micellar water if Ive had heavy foundation on - but always rinse my face afterwards. Then I use the eye cream and face serum. Ive tried much more expensive products, and these do the trick for a fraction of the price.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 30/08/2023 17:53

I don't think you can go far wrong with classic Nivea, that's in my rotation, as is Weleda skin food.

Lovelyjubbbly · 27/01/2024 09:21

Bobbi brown !!

TwelveKeys · 27/01/2024 09:33

DHC deep cleansing oil is a great cleanser. So do you mean you don't wash your face, just use micellar with cotton wool?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/01/2024 09:36

Cetaphil and Aldi are really effective on my skin now it's older and drier. I used to spend a fortune on skincare but find these brands most effective and give change from a tenner.

Ragwort · 27/01/2024 09:36

Agree that Nivea is wonderful .. I've used it for years (decades!) I am mid 60s with no wrinkles or lines.

Ilovemyshed · 27/01/2024 09:39

The best thing you can do is exfoliate - all you need is a flannel wrung out in warm water. Then a good rich moisturiser at night like Ponds Cold Cream and a lighter one for the day.

I agree with Gingerisbest re exfoliation. I was really struggling to find any moisturiser that worked. I ended up using Alpha H Liquid Gold, as regular exfoliators weren't cutting the mustard. After using it for a couple of weeks, my array of failed moisturisers suddenly started working beautifully and my skin soft and smooth. I then switched to regular exfoliators twice a week ...

Hyaluronic acid under the moisturiser also helps.

And just another thought - I have no idea how much water you drink, but have you tried upping it so you are moisturising from the inside out?

I find Omega 3 oils also help soften the skin.

I hope you find something that helps. :)

Sunshineandrainbows23 · 02/02/2024 04:07

Re cleansers - I like Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish - a cream cleanser with a muslin cloth which gently exfoliates, but any creamy cleanser with cloth will probably do the trick too ... I have cleaned with olive oil from the kitchen when I have run out using a cloth to remove which actually worked a treat too! Saves a fortune!
