Help me out of my Autumn/Winter style rut!

Autumn is fast approaching and I’m so fed up of my Autumn Winter “uniform”! It feels as though I’ve been wearing the same tired combo of dark skinny jeans, ankle boots and a jumper for years now.

My summer wardrobe is much more varied - I wear maxi dresses, culottes and camis, skirts and a Tshirt etc. I also have straight leg jeans I enjoy in summer with a sandal or low trainer but I can’t seem to make them work for colder weather. It seems to be the question of what trousers or dresses to wear with what footwear in winter which throws me! I have a lovely knitwear collection so it’s more bottoms than tops that are the issue. I’d especially love some non denim trouser options!

About me:
39, 5ft 3. I’m a classic pear shape, an 8 on top and a 10 on the bottom.

My job is casual. Don’t need to be in suits or dresses or skirts but need to look put together.

What are you ladies going to be wearing? Please help me escape my uniform blues!

What about straight leg jeans with a pair of Converse or Converse type shoes, a blouse and then a boucle jacket which are in Mango and Zara which which would look both casual and smart.

I have the low profile converse, are you thinking the boot style? I guess I could give that a try. Will look at some of those jackets too!

But your feet will be sopping wet in converse in rain. I’m in the same rut OP, skinnies just fit so well into ankle boots.. they are warm and I think still looks good. But I need a change. I’ve tried straight leg with rolled bottoms which helps a bit. Wide leg maybe and chunky boots?

SocksAndTheCity · 29/08/2023 11:50

I've just ordered some denim maxi skirts to try on - might those be an option?

I'm barely an inch taller than you so I'm fully prepared for them to be too long and trailing on the floor, but there are some very nice ones around and having jeans pockets will be handy.

Stylestuck · 29/08/2023 14:57

Yes I’m thinking I may try wide leg trousers with trainers maybe. Hmmm. Not sure I can pull it off!
The long denim skirt isn’t really my style and doesn’t work for my job as it’s too restrictive for what I do unfortunately

I'm not keen on converse in winter as they are freezing and get wet. It's ok in autumn before it gets really cold, but only if it's not really wet. So good to have some, but not going to be the main shoe

MaryLennoxsScowl · 29/08/2023 18:26

platform loafers or lug-soled boots are nice with wide trousers, so long as the trousers don’t trail on the ground you shouldn’t get wet.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 29/08/2023 18:26

Or you could try leather converse (not white).

Stylestuck · 29/08/2023 22:38

Good point on the converse. But may work for Autumn. I think I need a kid free shopping trip to try a few things on and just actually pick up things off the shelf I would never normally try.

Culottes? With knee length boots or ankle boots/brogues if a bit longer.

LadyHester · 29/08/2023 23:06

How about wide-leg cords rolled up with chunky loafers and jazzy socks?

KirstenBlest · 29/08/2023 23:09

Converse offer very little arch support.

I love culottes in summer. I’d need to try this look out and see how it feels!

Love this look on someone else but it’s not my style. Too out there for me!

I've got fitflop boots, trainers and sandals because they provide arch support & memory foam insoles.

Eggbuttie · 30/08/2023 07:56

I wear a lot of knitted mini dresses with black tights, thick socks and DMs. Leather jacket in autumn and fur coat and hat in winter.

Jean wise I roll up the straight leg ones and again boots and thick socks with an oversized jumper and a belt.

MrsFiddle · 30/08/2023 08:04

Just wanted to say I know what you mean @Stylestuck about winter wardrobes. I think this is why I end up with so many coats!

TheLongRider · 30/08/2023 08:05

A denim or cord shirt dress or pinafore dress can be very flexible for winter wear. They can be layered with polo neck or other long sleeved tops.

Stylestuck · 30/08/2023 08:10

I actually have a denim shirt dress. I rarely wear it as it’s above the knee and my legs are my least favourite feature. But I might try it with tights and boots just to see how it looks.

Converse make your feet freezing!

Stylestuck · 30/08/2023 08:13

I definitely wouldn’t be wearing converse in freezing winter but I’d consider them as an option in Autumn. Not worried about arch support as long as not wearing all day year round.

I think your straight-leg jeans may work with ankle boots if you’re careful with the length. If the jeans stop just above the boot it could look ok?

Can I recommend the ‘WearsMyMoney’ blog - some good suggestions on there
