Opinions - Uniqlo wool jumper

FrenchFancie · 26/08/2023 08:18

I’ve not lived back in the uk for long so not familiar with many shops outside of Marks & Spencer’s and next (only UK brands available where we used to live!).

i don’t live near a Uniqlo shop so can’t check quality in person - does anyone have their crew neck wool jumpers and can comment on what they are like in terms of quality, washing for etc? Do they pill badly? This one: is the one I’m thinking of getting?

if these arent any good, any recommendations for wool jumpers that do wash well? I prefer natural materials if possible. Budget is variable but probably not north of £50 if possible.

thanks!

Seems too cheap to be decent.

DuploTrain · 26/08/2023 08:26

Ive had uniqlo wool jumpers before and they’re really good.

It did shrink very slightly so maybe get a size bigger than you want and stretch it out when it’s wet after washing (but that’s the same for most wool).

DuploTrain · 26/08/2023 08:28

You have to pay £2.50 for uniqlo returns by the way, which they definitely don’t make clear! I still love them though.

The men’s section in M&S usually has pure wool jumpers which are much cheaper than the women’s section. I have a couple.

Underthelightofthefullmoon · 26/08/2023 08:30

Mine didn't pill, but it did shrink when washed. I'd buy another, but as has been said, maybe size up.

Ive also had several of their souffle wool jumpers. They are lovely, but they do pill terribly.

Divebar2021 · 26/08/2023 08:36

Uniqlo is a fast fashion brand but it would sit above brands like H&M for quality. As a brand it’s cooler than M&S but possibly comparable on quality ( bearing in mind quality at M&S has declined). They have designer collaborations that are quite high profile. That jumper is only Premium in comparison to other Uniqlo items not other brands …. It’s too cheap. If I didn’t want to spend too much money on a wool sweater I would look at Community Clothing as an alternative. They have less choice but the items are mainly made in the U.K. and their working practices are much more ethical than Uniqlo.

My personal experience of Uniqlo lambswool is that it's absolute shite. It pills, goes out of shape, attracts fluff and after a few wears generally looks like the dog has slept on it, even if you don't have a dog.

I'm sure you'll get posters disagreeing with that, but this is the other problem I find with Uniqlo: there is no consistency so sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't.

Their prices though are, I admit, hard to beat.

If you want to give them a go then this might be a good time as I've also found that the things they put out for the beginning of a new season are often better than the stuff that follows. My guess is that they entrust their new lines to their best, most reliable suppliers and that if it sells well, they send the repeat orders it out to their 'second division' factories. (That's just a theory so please don't hold me to it!)

I have also found that their merino wool is generally better.

Caterpillargirl23 · 26/08/2023 09:01

I've just bought a men's Uniqlo cardigan it's merino wool and seems better quality than the women's ones I've bought before.
I can see they have men's lambswool jumpers, slightly more expensive but might be better quality.

RunBorisRun · 26/08/2023 09:03

I second M&S mens jumpers!
I have a few cashmere ones, in size XL (I'm 170cm and a small size 10 on top!) but they fit perfectly and are beautiful to wear.

They're pre-loved though, so may well have shrunk a little bit over the years before they go to me.

Floisme · 26/08/2023 09:05

I've tried Uniqlo men's lambswool and it was no better than the women's.

thekingfisher · 26/08/2023 09:06

You need to buy their merino wool sweaters which are fantastic quality I must have 6-7 of them!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 26/08/2023 09:10

I find them decent enough
another shout for men’s M&S
also have a look at & other stories, I buy my DD one from there every Christmas and they do well

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 26/08/2023 09:10

Don't have the jumper, do have a uniqlo lambswool cardigan, as does H.
They're great, haven't pilled excessively. I put them on cold machine handwash cycle (although not often - they go forever without smelling) and they been fine.

I also agree that the merino ones are bomb proof - I have four and they're my winter work uniform. The older ones must have been going for the best part of a decade.

LimeCheesecake · 26/08/2023 09:14

That’s Uniqlo’s bog standard wool jumper, they do it every year is pretty much the same shape and a range of colours, no idea why they have called it premium this year.

I’ve got a few, they are thin, but wash ok and last. They make a good layer option, so I’d often wear one over a long sleeved t or under a smart jacket when it’s cold for work.

they come up small so size up unless you want a slim fit.

I did a jumper sort a few days ago and most of the Uniqlo wool ones have survived the cull for another year, one is from last winter but the other three are older than that, so if you look after them they last.

LimeCheesecake · 26/08/2023 09:16

Oh I might be mixing it up with the merino wool ones! Buy those !

just a note, I’m 5’1” and they feel the right length in body, but long in arms, but not excessively so- if you are tall, they might be a bit too short for your body.

MrsFiddle · 26/08/2023 09:17

I've had their fine merino ones and for some reason they all seem to develop a fault at the seams - usually the neckline. I buy V necks. I won't be buying again.

Matildahoney · 26/08/2023 09:23

I've bought their cashmere and it's pretty decent, but not their standard wool. Didn't bobble, washed well.

Per item or total?

Burpcloth · 26/08/2023 10:06

I've got that jumper. I wouldn't say it's thin. I definitely have to use the de-bobbler on it (more a messy fuzzy top layer than pilling as such) but it's affordable wool and does the job for me (I e. The essentials, keeps me warm without being sweaty).

cannaethink · 26/08/2023 10:34

I’ve got a couple of those jumpers from a couple of years ago. They did shrink a bit but I had sized up anyway so they fitted better once shrunk 😁
I debobble them same as any other wool jumper.
They’re thick and cosy.
I’ve got a couple of their merino ones which are much thinner and less cosy but a bit smarter.

Monstermunchy · 26/08/2023 12:28

I also like the fine merino and cashmere from there - haven’t had the lambs wool but I feel like it would bobble

DuploTrain · 26/08/2023 13:20

Per item or total?

Per order, to cover the postage - doesn’t matter how many items you return.

Maxiedog123 · 26/08/2023 13:50

I'm not sure about the lambswool ones but the Merino ones are great, and wash well on the wool cycle in the washing machine. They do shrink the first few times you wash them so I buy the size up from the fit I want, then after I wash them they are perfect!

WhereAreWeNow · 26/08/2023 14:04

I really like Uniqlo knitwear. I think it's very good for the price. I really like the fine merino jumpers. I like the lambswool too. I recommend.

something2say · 26/08/2023 14:08

I've looked at Uniqlo stuff but not bought much.

I went what I thought was a step up to Celtic & Co - more expensive but much better, and if you can stretch, the boots they do are good too.

https://www.celticandco.com/womens/footwear/leather-boots/woodsman-boots?colourid=64

Some of the Celtic jumper patterns are not for me, but the slouch jumper is nice, if not as warm as I thought it would be and not a match for the coldest winter days.

https://www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/jumpers/collared-slouch-jumper?colourid=1022

BUT the felted jumpers are sooo warm and lovely. There are cold days where fashion goes out the window and you have to dress warmly, and these are fabulous quality with rolled edges, bits of colour, a good arm length and high on the neck. I've got this one but I might buy a different coloured one and sell this on eBay. I wouldn't be without one now as it is so warm, but if I wear a cream jumper to work it will get dirty.

https://www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/jumpers/felted-funnel-neck-jumper?colourid=1098

The following year I went the step further and bought the very expensive fisherman's jumper - mine is this colour with navy blue colour block at the top, the colours must be different this year.

https://www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/chunky-fishermans-rib-jumper?colourid=835

So my tip for jumpers is one a year, from Celtic. The fisherman's jumper is my last resort against the cold and NOTHING gets through it.
