M&S

I'm 46 and usually shop at the likes of Mint Velvet, Hush, Saint and Sofia, ME+EM, All Saints, Whistles, Zara and H&M.

These past few months, I've started to shop more from M&S as I actually do like some of the styles. I grew up avoiding M&S because it's where my mum has always shopped and it was full of non-descript, drab and boring fugly clothes.

What going on other than I'm turning into my mum? I'm worried! Anyone else?

I was tidying my jumpers earlier. Mine is an Autograph jumper. I agree that people are snobby about cashmere.

I'm in my early 30's (I try quite hard to stay stylish - who knows if it's working!) and I often find bits I love in M&S. The wide leg trousers they do in different colours each season are great, some of their midi dresses and knitwear are my favourite things in my wardrobe! They have some nice jeans too and did a great dupe of a Celine handbag last year. My sister who is an effortlessly cool designer in her 20's also shops there! I don't think it's meant for more mature ladies anymore.

Are there ‘mature ladies’ anymore? If there are, I think its a dying breed. I’m 64, a feisty feminist, so the term ‘lady’ has never sat well with me. I also love fashion and age is the last thing on my mind when I shop for clothes. I’m far from unique in my generation.

@RampantIvy Ah ha, it's in White Rose shopping centre, looks like it opened end of May

RampantIvy · 23/08/2023 20:25

Brilliant. Thank you @TheOGCCL. I haven't been to the White Rose for years.

@RampantIvy I am generally really not bothered about labels and am definitely not a cashmere snob. I have an Autograph cashmere tunic jumper from about ten years ago and it is still beautiful. You really wouldn't tell the difference from something from a Scottish cashmere mill. More recently I have had Autograph jumpers that bobbled and shrank so not so good though. It can't be my laundry skills as my Brora (Scottish) ones remain as new.

SmashedAvowithBalsamic · 23/08/2023 20:36

Not M&S but I had forgotten that I recently bought a large cashmere wrap from Rise & Fall as they had great reviews and it was about a third of the price of some other ones. It is really beautiful. So for anyone looking for cashmere bargains, limited range but definitely worth a look.

I used to buy my T shirts for home wear from M&S until I realised that the Primark equivalent washed better and lasted longer, for 1/5th of the cost!
I am desperate for new bras but M&S have discontinued my favourite (memory foam!) model.
I agree that M&S's jeans are good.

TizerorFizz · 24/08/2023 09:05

It’s 1/5 of the cost for a reason. Low paid workers. Definitely not what I want to support. M&S T shirts are pretty good these days although the heavier Cos ones are excellent. M&S stock other brands too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2023 11:41

I’m definitely not snobby about cashmere because I’ve only ever had it from M&S sales. It’s terrible ime.

RampantIvy · 24/08/2023 12:25

How come my M and S cashmere jumper isn't terrible? Have I been lucky?

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2023 12:32

The ones I've had from M&S have been fine. Just as nice as Brora if not better

TizerorFizz · 24/08/2023 14:48

@RampantIvy Mine are great too. Many quite a few years old.

Some Brora cashmere is well over £200 in their sale. So it should be pretty decent. Full price - some are over £400.

I have several M&S cashmere cardigans. All lovely quality. I don’t get the criticism of their cashmere!

greengreengrass25 · 15/10/2023 16:40

Trouser lengths are awful

Bought some wide legged ones in short and they're still too long and flappy

Where have all the normal warm trousers for Winter gone

KirstenBlest · 15/10/2023 18:01

@greengreengrass25 , M&S have changed their trouser lengths. If you were a Short you'll need Extra Short. It's not because you are extra short but they needed to cater for the longer legged customers.

The M &S cashmere is lovely IMO

greengreengrass25 · 15/10/2023 18:42

Thanks

Yes my chinos were regular though and the wide legged trousers in linen were fine

Extra short is unfortunately sold out

It's all quite limited everywhere to buy trousers at the moment

Used to have no problems

I agree.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/10/2023 22:42

M&S used to do a range called Indigo that was nice (Less faffy than Per Una and not as staid as Classic ) The Collection pieces wete good and Limited Edition

And their famous 5 pocket jeggings , with a zip .
I wear their pull on jeggings , I'm not a jeans wearer though

TizerorFizz · 16/10/2023 08:26

Limited and Classic have gone. It’s just M&S Collection with Per Una reduced in offering. A bit embellished but slightly less frilly then it was. Then Autograph above these on price, more up to date style and better quality fabrics (but not always!) Collection now has everything in it but jeggings are a dying breed of clothing! Thank God in my view I’m not a willowy size 10. Stylish jeans are good value and easy to find at M&S with something for everyone.
