M&S

I'm 46 and usually shop at the likes of Mint Velvet, Hush, Saint and Sofia, ME+EM, All Saints, Whistles, Zara and H&M.

These past few months, I've started to shop more from M&S as I actually do like some of the styles. I grew up avoiding M&S because it's where my mum has always shopped and it was full of non-descript, drab and boring fugly clothes.

What going on other than I'm turning into my mum? I'm worried! Anyone else?

I can never work out people posting they have found some amazing pieces in M&S.

I think all their clothes are truly horrible.

TizerorFizz · 21/08/2023 17:34

@TVstolemyevenings Every single thing? Wow. How do you find time to look at everything? I usually narrow down to cut and fabrics. Their jeans are very good. You are missing out.

kerstina · 21/08/2023 17:41

I think I am more conscious of what materials are used in the clothes I buy so maybe would buy M & S for that reason . I particularly love their Rosie silk underwear collection.

Lentilweaver · 21/08/2023 17:50

Their autumn and winter clothing is often great. Their summer stuff, not so much.

Indeed! 1894 women's tops alone on their website.

Agreed re. winter vs. summer @Lentilweaver and I'm always fond of the men's knitwear

I find that hard to believe. I have no idea what 'all' their clothes are like. There are usually things I like and things I don't like in any shop.

AuntieMarys · 21/08/2023 19:23

I've been buying their long length wide leg trousers....I'm 34 inch inside leg and they are great.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 21/08/2023 19:30

I suspect I’ll be stalking Vinted for a long time to come for the Chanel-esque Boucle jacket that I didn’t buy earlier this summer. I was on the look out for holiday clothes and just didn’t need it right then. But I’d get so much wear out of it if I could just find one!

I was in Marble Arch store last week. Nightmare and really badly laid out, I was wandering all over looking for basic hoodie. It could not be found so I had to go home and order online. So disappointing as I was buying for my elderly mum and needed to look at sizes.

Nah, M&S goes through phases. Sometimes they get a lot of things right, sometimes a few, and for about ten years recently they got fuck all right. They brought in some new people to rethink their fashion.

Back when they used to have that massive flagship store at Marble Arch, I was working at fashion magazines. Every so often, the stylists would run around squealing about some item of clothing perfection M&S was launching, and we'd all run off to the big store to get one. You could never be sure they'd get enough of the good stuff made to roll it out nationwide; sometimes these things were never seen beyond Oxford Street and, for the rest of that season, women would be telling us "Oh, you managed to get THAT thing from M&S! Lucky you!"

They seem a lot better now at anticipating demand but there's still a strong element of grabbing the good stuff when you spot it, as it can disappear - to sometimes reappear in a different quality fabric or an inferior cut.

Sounds like you've got the good eye!

Yep remember asking them to get a jumpsuit of one of the mannequins in marble ache ..last one and on sale

ohcrums · 21/08/2023 22:08

I'm scared to buy their pants after I read a thread on here about odd changing room behaviour and reviews at m&s online

They’re closing that store so have been running it down for ages. I was in there today and couldn’t bear to look at anything because the layout is so awful. Downstairs in the food hall it was mayhem, so many people buying their lunches.

EmmaStone · 21/08/2023 22:27

I have also been amazed at finding some great things in M&S recently - great linen shirt, fab oversized white cotton shirt, wide legged trousers and jeans.

BUT, I also don't particularly want to wear something that's so identifiable as M&S that I see women of all ages wearing the same top as me. 😂

Good basics should always be their selling point - navy crew neck cashmere jumper? Could be from anywhere. Patterned dress seen on Holly W? Every other woman wearing it.

ModeWeasel · 21/08/2023 22:30

Got a great pair of shorts there recently, and some boyfriend jeans. I find they are cut well for taller curvier people like me.

Thighdentitycrisis · 21/08/2023 22:37

If they are closing Marble Arch where will we shop to see the actual clothes? My local store only has a tiny selection

BitOutOfPractice · 21/08/2023 22:40

Oh I think M&S is definitely having a moment right now.

AnnieSnap · 21/08/2023 22:40

I really like M&S jeans and ribbed vest tops. I noticed this year that they have some great dresses, mainly from Jäger. I make my own dresses these days and have been inspired to make the same styles, using high quality fabrics at a fraction of the price.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 22/08/2023 03:09

I love their jeans. I’m on my third lot of Magic jeans in black. They’re a really good shape and comfortable to wear. I buy three pairs at a time in case they stop making them. I’m just thinking about throwing out my first three pairs as the colour has faded but I can’t really complain as I’ve had so much wear out of them and they haven’t lost their shape or sagged and bagged at all.

There are still big branches in many towns and cities. I've never been to the Marble Arch one.

ThePoshUns · 22/08/2023 06:23

Im early 50s and buy the majority of my clothes and shoes there now.
Next has gone downhill and my favourite shops Gap, Principles and Warehouse are shut.

Lonicerax · 22/08/2023 06:50

The share price has gone up and M&S might even sneak back into the FTSE top 100 so they are doing something right.

Really? Every single article of clothing?
That's a bit of a blanket statement.

I have jeans, chinos, work trousers, cardigans and jumpers from there. All my pants and half of my bras are from there.

I am very fortunate that the Meadowhall branch is excellent. The lingerie department is especially good with loads of choice in styles and sizes.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 22/08/2023 07:25

M&S are great for basics, you only have to read the thread on here about what people buy the same items over and over again to realise that.

I also go on there for workwear, trousers and tops are always fairly good quality and smart.

I occasionally browse and sometimes I stumble across a jem or two.

Lentilweaver · 22/08/2023 07:32

Yes, great basics. Things I buy there
Jeans
Goodmove leggings
Bras ( I am not busty so their ordinary tshirt or Rosie bras fine for me)
Knitwear ( often the only place where I can find a basic black jumper)
Wideleg trousers

But I only buy online because their shops are so badly laid out and have no stock. I sometimes think there is a slight snobbery towards M and S. TBH, I don't think there are any shops these days immune to horrible polyester or frilly shapeless clothes. One has to pick and choose because modern fashion is crap!
