What is your style at 50?

I keep planning to look more stylish - and then I forget. Last week I went out wearing a band t-shirt very bright midi skirt and trainers (not fashionable ladylike white trainers) and was with someone who looked very chic.
I never seem to manage chic/grown up.

Well, I think your outfit sounds great.

I think white trainers might be a bit done tbh, or at least I’m a bit done with them.

I’m not stylish but do love clothes. I’m wearing band T-shirts with satin skirts and trainers to go to the pub. I’ve just bought a bright patterned cotton bomber jacket to wear with jeans. I still like leopard print skirts with a T-shirt. When it’s cooler, I generally wear a black jumper with jeans and boots, or with a skirt and boots. I’ve also bought some cargo trousers, although they feel a bit outside my comfort zone.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2023 07:55

Clearly, though, chic and grown up isn’t my vibe!

backatschool · 16/08/2023 07:57

I wear pretty much what I wore at 40 and 30!

WizardinTraining · 16/08/2023 07:58

I can’t do grown up either - my Pinterest boards are full of elegant Parisian style capsule wardrobes but I can’t seem to translate them to real life.

Murrain · 16/08/2023 08:02

Same as I’ve worn for years, really — slouchy, oversized stuff, wide-legged trousers, Cos dresses, men’s cashmere jumpers, biker boots.

GettingStuffed · 16/08/2023 08:06

I have some grown up outfits but I always feel like I'm in disguise when I wear them. I'm definitely boho though.

I also have scruffy as well, today's outfits it going to be black harem pants with a plain t-shirt as I'm going to be packing stuff up from my late in-laws house and practicality is the keyword.

TheFallenMadonna · 16/08/2023 08:11

Possibly less chic now than I used to be? I wear a lot of colour and print. I make a lot of my own clothes to accommodate my love of colour and print in fact. Always comfortable shoes.

FeelingPrickly · 16/08/2023 08:13

In my mid fifties and wear nothing but casual comfy clothes. I do wear white trainers because it’s taken me till now to actually buy some, T-shirts, big soft jumpers and shorts, wide leg jeans or slim trackie bottoms. I suspect my wardrobe is very similar to what it was in the 90s but the labels are a bit better, materials a little more luxurious and the crop tops are not so cropped.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2023 08:25

Yes to wide legged trousers too - I'm little and a bit run and they don't really suit me as well as some other shapes, but they're comfortable. I've got these, which I wear with Converse.

A bit ROUND - stupid bloody phone.

Threenow · 16/08/2023 08:34

I'm 64 and I wore the same at 50 as I do now, and at 40, and at 30, and probably at 20.

Your outfit sounds fine to me, but I'm hardly stylish, but to be fair, I don't want to be. I've always loved clothes, but have never felt grown up, and while I admire well put together people it's just not me. As long as you enjoy your clothes I think that's what really matters.

MintJulia · 16/08/2023 08:36

My summer wfh outfits are usually narrow linen trousers or cotton calf length skirts with a a t-shirt and ballet flats. Shoulder length hair held back with combs.

Video call days are definitely a bit more co-ordinated than working alone days, with more makeup. Practical, tidy, comfortable.

Days in London office, Narrow linen trousers/top or calf length fit & flare dress. Aim for a bit more glossy.

Non-working - just a brighter version of the same.

I wish they would hurry up and release the Autumn/winter clothes. I'm tall and It takes me ages to find things I like, that fit and are warm.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/08/2023 10:10

Turned 50 in February. I feel like I look less grown up than ever!

Since Covid I have been much more casual, but definitely spending more per item so they are better versions of things. I went for dinner with a friend last night and wore a long black pleated dress from Cos, chunky New Balance trainers, and a big over-sized denim jacket from The Ragged Priest.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 16/08/2023 10:14

I don't think I really have a style! I'm 51 and the style I aspire to is basically 100% thesilverkat on Instagram. I've tried finding other style accounts whose outfits I reliably like, but I never can. Unfortunately she's really not the same size and shape as me...

thecatinthetwat · 16/08/2023 10:15

Op, try navy and white, it always looks good. So maybe a pair of wide leg navy trousers with a bit of floaty-ness to them. Then a nice white tee or shirt. Swish around like a Parisian.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2023 10:15

Today’s outfit = leopard print midi from John Lewis And/Or; band T-shirt from Etsy; Black and Tan New Balance; faded black denim jacket from DKNY.

Username620 · 16/08/2023 10:17

I am almost 49. I’m wearing grey and pink NB trainers. Very pale blue jeans, white t-Shirt and lavender blazer for work today

OrchidsBloomimg · 16/08/2023 10:29

Another SilverKat fan

I live in a tropical country so I only get summer. Favourites are oversized shirt dresses, wide legged cotton or linen trousers, occasionally denim if I can find really lightweight and lots of bamboo cotton baggy tee-shirts. I pretty much only wear black, white, blue and grey so everything mixes up easily. Oh and Birkenstocks, always Birkenstocks!

I think what you're wearing sounds great. I'm always in awe of people who carry off colour and patterns. Why do you want to look different? What does 'chic and grown up' mean for you? And why do you think that's 'better'?

Kirsty2323 · 16/08/2023 11:07

I dress very simply in jeans/trousers and fitted short or long sleeved t shirts. I usually stick to white and navy or black and navy. I am sure I have red that you are not supposed to wear black and navy together, but I think it’s stylish. I am short and very slim so very fitted simple clothes suits me the best. I lost weight before I hit 50 and being slim with good posture is probably my top fashion tip to be honest.

Rina66 · 16/08/2023 11:08

I really like the shorts co-ords this year, today I'm wearing an ASOS terracotta one with a black vest and black R & B sandals.

Love wide leg trousers, cropped or full length, straight leg jeans, magic trousers with long duster coats.

I've got a good style shirt from H & M to wear with the trousers and jeans, or just a v neck skimming t shirt.

Midi skirts in satin or pleated - always elasticated waist though. I try to get them with a black background, so I can wear with sock boots and a black roll neck in winter.

I'm not really in to dresses day to day, but if I do, I prefer plain to floral.

At home In the winter I like a knitted lounge suit with a long cardigan over or nice proper pyjamas.

52 here and my clothes are "bag lady who got dressed in the dark" chic. I buy individual things I like from charity shops and, very occasionally, new, then put them all together in a random ensemble. Current loves are Seasalt tunics over longer dresses with rolled up jeans underneath.
I am tall and podgy so this isn't always the best look but I'm (mostly) happy with it.

TheOGCCL · 16/08/2023 12:17

I don't think this is an age issue, this is when the style you'd like to wear isn't the one that necessarily suits you, your figure or your personality. You probably looked great in your outfit and it is probably the style you have developed over the years and I'd just stick with it! By this age there's nothing wrong and a lot right with wearing stuff with character and that is distinct rather than carbon copying quiet luxury or whatever trend is in. Often chic is synonymous with quite boring clothes, definitely neutral in colour, is that going to bring you joy?

MillWood85 · 16/08/2023 12:21

My work wardrobe is mostly mint velvet shirts/white stuff tunics with either jeggings or fitted trousers. I like comfortable trousers - no fitted waists. I do replace them regularly so they don't fade and look scruffy.

Home clothes are mainly Joe Brown/Seasalt/White Stuff.

I like comfy natural fibres these days!

50 is a distant memory … Grin

Having muddled through Summer, somehow, I’m longing for Autumn. I’m well supplied with Shetland and merino wool sweaters, mostly La Fetiche and Studio Nicholson, and tweed skirts from Margiela and Sofie D’Hoore (and Zara!). It would be great if I could somehow fit back into my lovely curvy Rick Owens black skirt this year.

Most recent purchases have all been Autumn-focussed: a stupendously well made La Fetiche kilt, a long Loulou Studio sleeveless rib knit dress, worn recently unadorned but ready for Winter additions. I’m waiting for some knee high Legres boots to be delivered from Matches. Crossing my fingers they won’t be too big. All my coats and jackets seem suddenly dull, so I’m eyeing up a particularly crunchy tweed jacket that should elevate all my older clothes into the coming season.

DelphiniumBlue · 16/08/2023 13:27

Very variable! It's getting harder as I get older - mid sixties now- what used to look great doesn't work any more. My waist has disappeared, so I look rubbish in skirts or wide legged trousers, my legs are not as nice as they once were, ankles slightly puffy. The grungey stuff that worked well now makes me look like a bag lady, beachy hair just looks unkempt. Summer is trickier than winter. I'm mostly wearing midi/maxi dresses but they are not actually very practical for up and down stairs with your hands full, or loading the dishwasher.
Leggings with a tunic/tshirt type dress are practical but hardly cutting edge stylish, anything tucked in just looks awful. Jeans are not very comfortable, and finding a good fit is challenging. I haven't yet found linen trousers that work on me and I've tried on millions. I feel too exposed in leggings and anything shorter than knee length.
So dresses with Snag shorts do seem to be the only option at this time of year. I would love to wear a pleated midi skirt, in fact I used to live in a beautiful black lace one back in the day, but my middle section is so grim that it would look horrible.
On the plus side, I have some lovely dresses from Muthahood and Live Unlimited, all fitted round the top and shoulders and loose from the bust downwards.
I don't think some of the younger posters appreciate how much your body changes with age, even if you are a sporty, toned type, there comes a point when minis are not flattering any more, and when considerations such as what you need to cover up weigh more heavily than "does my bum look big in this".
