Inspired by the make up wearing thread, who has the time/inclination to have manicured nails and to wear nail polish regularly?

Because I can NEVER be arsed. I wear make up every day, blow dry my hair, wear smart clothes, shoes and bags and consider myself well groomed, however I loath nail polish and manicures. Mine are reasonable short, file them occasionally when they get snaggy, and rub cream in them. But that's as much attention as they get.

Come on, how many of you lot have the full WAG style french manicures?

I always have nice nails with nail varnish (even if it's just clear) but never ever a french manicure or false nails

MaryAnnSingleton · 28/02/2008 15:48

I couldn't bear to have false nails, nail varnish on my fingernails feels weird enough...always have it on my toes in summer though...

French manicures are a pita but coloured or clear nail varnish takes 8 minutes and then I jump in the bath.

Makes me feel groomed even when I'm not.

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/02/2008 15:51

How the hell do people type with long nails? There are some secretaries at work who do so, tippety tap they go, I can't help but be admiring!

I keep mine shortish and square and file into shape occasionally, but never wear nail varnish.
I do use handcream, regularly though, and buff them when I can be arsed.

I do however have shockingly white tips, which makes my nails look groomed anyway, people always comment on it (preen emoticon)

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/02/2008 15:53

cod - you must be delighted to have the excuse!

I am really nonplussed at the thought of someone painting their nails and then getting in the bath why why why!!!

Not me. I'm a scruffy git and proud of it.

Went through hideous mid-nineties wacky nail varnish phase though. In all pics from that time I'm waving my hands about proudly with baby blue/silver sparkly/lime green fingernails. Foul.

AitchTwoOh · 28/02/2008 15:55

nails are my achilles heel, mine are rubbish. dh's are like spades, he can't use scissors on them because they bend. mine... you can just tear off. i've tried all sorts, nothing works.

bozza · 28/02/2008 15:55

Well today as it happens I have nail varnish on my fingers. First time for ages. Was at a vigin vie party last night. And while I was watching the make up demo, I painted my nails with the demo stuff. Not that keen on it, would not buy it, is an old lady pink.

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/02/2008 15:55

perhaps I should face the fear and go to an el chavtastico nail salon (LOADS of these in Cheltenham, surprisingly) and have the full works: nail piercings, nail jewels, patterns, gel extensions, the lot.

Have you tried hair skin and nail supplements?

Friends of mine swear by them

i have, they never seem to have any effect. but i'm sufficiently desperate that i will entertain paying for them again if you know a good brand...

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/02/2008 16:18

The holland and Barret own brand are apparantly great.

Have you tried those?

Also, use rubber gloves when you are doing dishes as soaking nails can make them softer and more prone to breaking.

AitchTwoOh · 28/02/2008 16:36

yes, i used them a while back... oh poo. i don't do dishes! [horrified]

MrsBadger · 28/02/2008 16:39

when I lived in Hackney by the £5-a-pop nail bars my hands were immaculate

now in the leafy home counties a manicure costs £30+ and my nails are just short and clean

OliviaMumsnet · 28/02/2008 23:18

GOML - Jump in the bath because then any lefotver bits of polish (e.g if you've painted your right hand with your left and it's a bit dodgy round the edges becuase you were in a hurry for example ) just flake off.
