I don't havr much money, I have no sense of style and I never have ideas or inspiration.
If anyones got any suggestions could you please include links.
Thank you so much.

I rate M&S for jeans. Might be worth going to try on a load of pairs as a starting point?

Busubaba · 10/08/2023 17:24

Your jeans are baggy around the bottom, wrinkles in the knee area and then too tight on the calf and too short.

A straight pair of jeans would be more flattering.

Avoid boot flare jeans.

A smock style top might be more flattering. Fitted over your busy and then loose fitting and long enough to end past your hips.

Needamakeoverplease · 10/08/2023 17:56

Thank you, I'm only 5ft so really struggle to get the right length jeans.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2023 18:11

I’d also recommend Cos v neck T-shirts. Very basic but a bit more flattering.

Thank you, I'm only 5ft so really struggle to get the right length jeans.

I'm also 5ft. It is hard but the fit js really important. Only buy petite length jeans. Actually spending a bit more to only buy petite anything makes a huge difference.

Jumpsuits are flatting when they fit well.

I find straight leg trousers flattering from the front but make me look more round at the middle.

Needamakeoverplease · 10/08/2023 18:22

Thank you those are petit jeans but i agree they are bit too short.
I probably look better in dresses but never know what shoes to wear.
Struggle with footwear generally!

You look like you have really good legs - show them off yo your advantage.

Midi dresses with a flattering leather trainer.

Always tuck your top in & wear a belt to define the waste (no one suits a top out & it ruins your proportions).

Buy quality rather than masses of fast fashion. It will be better made & last longer.

Follow Trinny London on FB - she has some great style tips.

NorthernSpirit · 10/08/2023 18:31

That should say waist, not waste!

Whyemseeaye · 10/08/2023 18:32

I'd stop wearing skinny jeans, imo they're quite outdated and are seldom flattering.

For day to day casual try a straight leg jean or cargo pants. Buy the right size so they're not digging in anywhere and then get some cool t-shirts that you can tuck in.

I buy my jeans from Uniqlo - I'm also 5ft.

I would also buy some cool trainers and make sure to keep them clean. It makes so much difference to your overall look.

Are you quite young? You look it from the picture.

I think it can be difficult to be inspired if you have DC as stuff needs to be functional but perhaps look on tv/online and find some celebs who's style you like a adapt it to work for you x

45 is young! I'm 40 and certainly consider myself a spring chicken 😁

Whyemseeaye · 10/08/2023 19:13

I like this website www.whowhatwear.co.uk/jeans-and-t-shirt-outfits

I would g wear everything they suggest but I can adjust most ideas to suit myself.

For example I never wear heels so when they suggest them I swap out for pumps or trainers

Thank you

I disagree with the advice to always tuck your top in. This doesn't alway work if you are petite. I am only 4' 10" and often a tucked in top looks awful on me as I am very short waisted. It can can look like I have pulled my skirt/trousers up to under by boobs! Also it can really cut you in half and make you look shorter. I do sometimes tuck my top on but it very much depends on the style of the top and waistband. Leaving it out often looks much better on me and elongates my shape. You just have to experiment.

I agree it's really hard to find jeans that fit. I recommend Levi's and Uniqlo.

Have you come across the Kibbe system of body typing? I’ve been meaning to make a post about it on here.

It’s a bit complicated to get to grips with at first, but being short will narrow down your possible types.

I have found it really helpful partly because it ‘explains’ why certain things DON’T suit me - eg chunky jumpers, formal shirts, very dark wash jeans. Getting dressed is much easier when you aren’t choosing from absolutely everything out there!

Someone upthread has given you bad advice, tucked in top and belt does not work if you have a short torso, if you do this you're just legs and boobs l.

Totally agree with this! Very rarely works if you are short.

Hello lovely.
How do you feel about dresses? I think a midi dresses will look lovely on you (calf length) (And there are so many different styles to try to suit your shape. You could style this up all year round and add tights/leggings/boots/sandals etc according to the seasons. I resorted to dresses (nothing above the knee) and I find it so much easier to accessorise as its just one item. You can easily add in accessories to jazz it up.
I used to be a leggings, tshirts, cardigans all year round kind of person and feeling really lost in myself but now I actually feel I've found my style.
I just want to add- I am a charity shopper so it's super affordable this way 😊 xx

BerfyTigot · 11/08/2023 09:50

@Needamakeoverplease

First of all, at 45 you're still a spring chicken 😀
It really doesn't matter if you're carrying a few extra pounds, you can dress to focus on your good areas. Eg, bring the focus up towards your face by wearing brighter colours on top, and sticking to dark trousers etc.

I have just read The Curated Closet by Anushka Rees which has really been inspiring and I have booked a free personal shopping appointment at John Lewis for next month, with no obligation to buy.

Apparently Bobbi Brown do good makeup make overs for free, but I've never tried it.

Good luck! It seems like a lot of work initially, but it's worth it 😁

If it was me I’d go into eg Office Shoes or a sports shop.

Adidas Samba, New Balance 327, Nike Air Force 1, Adidas Sam Smith and Adidas Gazelle for starters.

I’d also make a list of boots - so eg leather biker boots, M&S or Matalan do leather ones.

Tu Sainsburys do some good affordable basics.

George at Asda do a leather riding boot.

I second this- please make the post about it

i sometimes use it as shorthand when describing a body type but ‘pear/hourglass/Apple’ are all pretty meaningless terms when it comes to someone building a wardrobe.

an hourglass could be a flamboyant romantic or a soft natural for example- two very different body types, but both ‘hourglass’

OP please take a look at this or if you are brave enough post a pic of you in all black, front back and side with your height and shoe size and we can give it a go
