Been using a grey blender (grey defy shampoo) on my hair and I can’t decide what the colour looks like… (pic)

i’ve been using the grey defy shampoo on my greying hair (section in the pic would be completely grey - I have like big chunks of grey but most of my hair is still brown, if that makes sense).

I can’t decide if it looks awful or better.

I don’t like the grey hair, but I like dyeing it every two weeks less, so this shampoo felt like a good compromise. But still don’t love it.

Opinion? Or advice?

It looks good. I have been wondering about this as an approach. I’m grey under fringe and underneath at the sides but not much elsewhere. Usually, I colour underneath and have a very small number of highlights. Been trying going without and I’m not sure

Paq · 09/08/2023 09:44

How long have been using it? I think I was using it regularly for about 2 months before I was really happy with the results.

It's hard to tell with just that section of hair if it suits you or not.

This is mine:

It’s too hard to tell from that image but from the bit we can see it looks good. Natural.

Morestrangerthings1 · 09/08/2023 09:49

your hair looks good @Paq

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/08/2023 10:11

That looks good, I think I'll try that. My gretlys are taking over but I'm finding box dyes a bit of a pain, and never seem to find time until it's well overdue.

Hairhmmm · 09/08/2023 10:22

I’ll take another picture of it in a bit so you can see it better!

i’ve been using it for about 4/5 months. It definitely doesn’t look strongly grey anymore, but I’m not sure it’s the colour of my dreams either!!

It hasn’t stopped the previously grey frizzy bits from being frizzy though! (I use the conditioner as well.)

Could someone give a llink to the shampoo please?

Hairhmmm · 09/08/2023 13:36

Here are a few more photos! Does the colour look greenish in any? I can’t decide!

(The shampoo is John Frieda, “defy grey”, for those asking!)

I think the colour does look slightly yellow or green, but I’m not a hairdresser so can’t offer any advice.

I keep thinking so too!

I really don’t want to get back into the expensive hamster wheel of dyeing my hair - all the time and money it takes, and not liking it “in between”, but I like looking nice! And they greys make me feel old, plus they’re so frizzy.

I’d love any advice!

Does the age defy shampoo stain your pillowcase, or does it wash out totally clear?
Do you use it every wash?

RJnomore1 · 09/08/2023 21:54

Thank you!

WhereHasTheSunGoneThisSummer · 09/08/2023 21:58

I’m not mad on the colour it’s gone.
I colour my roots every couple of weeks and the whole process takes 15 minutes plus a normal hair wash.

ShangPie · 10/08/2023 07:58

You could try using Shrine instead - it’s a toner that you add to your own conditioner and leave on for 10 mins or so. Kind of a halfway house between regular dying and the JF shampoos.

Shrine Brunette - you can get it in Boots.

I find it’s better than the JF products as they don’t really suit my hair. This way, I can use the shampoo and conditioner that suits me and add the toning colour level I want. Worth a try?

zurala · 10/08/2023 08:01

Maybe it's the light but your hair still looks grey to me in two of those pictures. Like, evenly grey. Maybe a before and after would help?

I use it every wash, and rinse until the water washes out clear - it doesn’t stain anything! (Pillowcase, towel.)

Oh that sounds great! I am definitely going to check that out, thank you.

Me either. Before I started using this shampoo, I went to the hairdresser and he gave me highlights and said my root touch ups were just too dark and didn’t suit me anymore. Plus the grey is right in the front and the roots practically shine every 10 days when I dye it brown!

I felt like I needed another solution to block dyeing (so I tried the shampoo), because £200 on highlights every six weeks felt depressingly too much money! Plus it takes forever.

I think I do need to go back to get it fixed and think of another plan though!

I’m not sure I have one. It’s not quite grey in real life, but a sort of light brownish (maybe even greenish?!) streaks with some grey and dark brown.

I don’t much like it though!

Can I ask: do you have grey hair that it covers up? I was reading the reviews from blondes who said it turned their hair green! So now unsure as to whether it’ll work on grey streaks.

friskybivalves · 10/08/2023 09:27

I can't see any hint of green at all! I think the colour looks very nice indeed - effortlessly natural and a good blend of different shades in the way that hair would go by itself in the sun etc. Would you be up for sharing a picture that shows more of the hair so we can see the whole effect rather than a discrete part?

minisoksmakehardwork · 10/08/2023 10:02

To me, it looks like either blonde hair going grey or grey/white hair that has heat damage. But, that could just be because the photo is a snippet rather than an overall look.

Mine is dark with grey and white clearly coming through. I stopped dying over 3 years ago as I couldn't be faffed with the upkeep. And seeing roots just a couple of weeks after my colour was way more upsetting than natural dark, grey and whites.

So, my advice is to embrace the natural look. Dh hasn't been a fan as he thinks it makes me look older. But I am definitely more myself.

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/08/2023 10:24

I think it looks grey with a colour wash. I think your percentage of grey hair may be too high for it blend in the greys. I grew the dye out a few years ago and have naturally salt and pepper hair. It's liberating not to have to colour it, but I recognise you have to be ready to do that.

So much of what your hair is like is nothing to do with what you put on it - genetics, diet, etc. Mine isn't frizzy, etc.
