This time I’m really going to do it!

I’ve just received a copy of the curated closet which I am going to read from cover to cover. I’m going to donate or sell at least a 1/3rd of my clothes. I’ve booked a styling appointment at John Lewis for later in the autumn. I will only buy new clothes if they 1. Fit 2. Suit me and 3. Suit my lifestyle.
This time I’m going to do it. No excuses!

Does anyone want to join me?

@SindyisbetterthanBarbie nope you questioned someone who was surprised the OP had 30 items with tags on. You said it wasn’t ‘the best topic for her’….
Nothing about questioning the OP motives.

I don't mean to derail the thread but it is kinda related..

Where is best to sell clothes etc. Vinted or eBay?

Personally i prefer vinted but prices tend to cheaper, so if its something BNWT that you think might fetch a fair bit I'd recommend ebay for those. Pluses and minuses to both though unfortunately, invariably both side with the buyer so make sure to keep as many photos and as much proof of condition before sending and postage as you can!

HotPringles · 08/08/2023 13:26

@SindyisbetterthanBarbie why?
Do you have to buy clothes you dont wear even ONCE to be stylist and in fashion?

What a weird way to look at life.

I think Sindy was referring to this post, not the one about clothes with tags still in by the same poster.

I want to know why?!

50fedup · 08/08/2023 14:58

Well you guys have spurred me on. I’ve just taken the first bag to the charity bin. Usually, I bag stuff up, throw it in the spare room and then spookily, it all makes its way back into the wardrobe. Not this time. Ruthless! 😀

Ive just received The Curated Closet too, but yet to have chance to read it. Ive decluttered loads of clothes that are too small or no longer suit my lifestyle. Initially I donated to a colleague but discovered she was selling the clothes on Vinted (happy for her to do that as they were now her clothes) but I decided to try that myself and was amazed at how much Ive made since February this year. Previously Ive sold the odd item on ebay but find Vinted much easier as a seller.

Butterflysunshine01 · 08/08/2023 15:13

I'm going to join you!! I have three bin bags that took a whole day to clear out, I need to take them to the charity shop but because they're all in good condition I keep wanting to look through again and see if I want to keep them! But I know I never wear them! So must be strong haha. Going to declutter my beauty products too.
Then think I may get a few clear boxes and store winter stuff in the loft during summer and vice versa, just to streamline the actual wardrobe( and two IKEA cabinets!)

50fedup · 08/08/2023 17:59

Hello @Lilsoph @Butterflysunshine01. I have a totally different lifestyle now (covid - wfh). No smart work wear needed and I’m also a different shape (thank you menopause). I have pieces 😀 ( never worn) in my wardrobe from when I did the school run - my children are in their 20’s. I’m surprised the attic hasn’t caved in from all the tat I keep up there

I am so with you!

My youngest is starting preschool and I'm returning to work but will have 1 day per week to focus on me/the house (including housework) so want to get decluttered including my wardrobe, house bits and baby bits.

I'm taking a little by little approach ..

  • small calorie deficit
  • 1 cupboard/drawer/bag at a time to declutter

Etc so that I can achieve my goals but keep it manageable.

I have a habit of going 110% and then giving up after I've made more mess than there was originally because I become overwhelmed. It's one of my biggest weaknesses.

I've ordered the book and the workbook and like you will take it on holiday with me!

This is me, go at things full pelt and run out of steam without achieving anything.

I want to fix my wardrobe, my house, my skincare, my make up, my weight etc., etc.!

50fedup · 08/08/2023 18:14

Agree @donutosaurus @NoAprilFool , this is why I have failed in the past.

We're on holiday, and I just said to DH last night that my wardrobe needs a refresh, but I have no idea where to start.
I have loads of clothes but nothing is ever quite right

50fedup · 08/08/2023 19:18

@gingercat02 Pinterest is your friend. I’ve just read the first couple of chapters of the the book. Saving lots of pins of what you like gives you a good indication of what you really like.

I did similar during covid and no regrets! I finally sorted the many bags in the attic and in my wardrobe of stuff that I'd loved in the past but realistically wouldn't ever wear again- I did: donate, sell, recycle and it felt weird at first but good. I made more than I thought using vinted, and now I have good quality clothes I love (just less of them) I wish I'd done it sooner.

I’ve just done this too. I really recommend it. It’s rewarding in an unexpected way. It’s taken me a year to sell unwanted clothing in good condition and to recycle the money into a new, smaller wardrobe of higher quality items that I love. I’ll find out in the coming months whether my project has worked - to have a fully functional wardrobe and money saved from less impulse buys.

gingercat02 · 08/08/2023 20:37

@50fedup I have total Pinterest fear. The whole thing terrifies me!
I almost just bought a pair of Boden trousers that I don't need and didn't really want because someone on another thread did!
Is the book useful, or is it more Kondo nonsense? I have it wishlisted on my Kobo for £8:99

Noodle421 · 08/08/2023 20:46

@gingercat02 i agree with @50fedup . I started by pinning lots of random pictures on Pinterest after reading the book and after a while noticed lots of common themes emerge - it was fascinating - I discovered I gravitate to simple outfits in natural fibres and earthy colours, so that is what I now look for when shopping. Prior to this my wardrobe was a mix of styles and nothing went together and I didn’t know what I liked. It is important not to overthink the pictures you pin, you can delete them at a later stage if you decide you don’t like them. I do the same for accessories - I’ve discovered I like fairly chunky and plain pieces of jewellery. It really has been quite an eye opener for me. I assumed I’d been born without the ability discover a sense of style. Your style muscle gets stronger ( apparently ) the more thought you put into it. Early days for me and I’m enjoying it so far.

50fedup · 08/08/2023 20:48

@gingercat02 pintrest is just a big online scrapbook. Overall it’s good but you do have to put up with a lot of advert now, like instagram, just ignore them.
I’ve just started the book. It’s ok. Lots of waffle in places but there are some very useful info. It’s not a French chic or capsule wardrobe type of book. First few chapters and it’s about finding your style for the life you live. I’ll report back once once I’ve read it all.

Noodle421 · 08/08/2023 20:51

I concentrated on getting my basics in place first and am now looking at introducing more exciting, quirky items to lift the basics. There’s a great thread in classics ‘in pursuit of elegance..’ that at kick started this whole process for me.

Lughnasa · 08/08/2023 20:55

I also bought the curated closet the other day!

I sort of half attempted this this spring/summer - I got rid of a load of clothes that didn’t fit/didn’t love when I put them on and had a really good styling session at JL ( stylist was excellent and I will defo go back to her). After that got rid of even more stuff. Ended up with some key items that all went together and I still really love BUT I wasn’t ruthless enough about what my life now actually is! I think I still envisaged something more exciting than reality😂. So then I ended up buying some extra bits which I actually needed which kind of defeated the point.

I also have this thing of feeling almost excited to find clothes that look good on me and then feel as if I have to buy them even if I don’t strictly need them incase I - not sure what - never find clothes that look nice again?!?

Anyway hoping the book might help with this!

50fedup · 08/08/2023 21:05

Crikey @Lughnasa I agree with so many things, especially the buying multiple things you like. In the good old days of the 2000’s boden sale, I would buy multiple purchase of the same item in different colours. Half have never be worn. Saying that, they seem to be popular now on Vinted.

OP posts:
Lughnasa · 08/08/2023 21:13

@50fedup - I actually did that the other day - had a dress that I really loved and was useful and then went and bought it in the other colour. I did send it back this time at least so am sort of getting better…

Purpleavocado · 08/08/2023 21:18

Dana K White on YouTube is amazing for help with decluttering - where she donates I put things straight on Vinted. Not in a pile to put on Vinted, but straight on there.

50fedup · 08/08/2023 21:24

Thank you @Noodle421 I will look at that thread if I ever get past this first stage 🙂🤞

mathanxiety · 08/08/2023 22:08

I've recently taken an inventory Shock after dropping a size.

I have a huge pile to sell and I want the space cleared so I'm going to dip my toes into Vinted.

Noodle421 · 08/08/2023 22:10

@50fedup it’s a good one to read as you are doing the clearing process - it spurred me on, made me determined to go through with it and helped me to formulate an intentional shopping plan for the moment I felt ready to fill the gaps.
Also, lots of decluttering and minimalism podcasts helped too. I’ve now moved on from my wardrobe to sort out my house. It’s currently a work in progress…

nzeire I feel Style & Beauty may not be the best topic for you...

Why? I don't have any items still with tags on, far less 30. That seems completely bizarre behaviour.
