Help me find this style- mismatched boho 1910s-1930s

I'd love some suggestions for where to shop for this look that won't look like fancy dress but rather a contemporary take on a period look.

The year is 1911, or possibly 1926, or 1933. You're a bored 17yo girl living in a once grand but now slightly faded country house (overgrown tennis court etc). Your brother is home from boarding school and you've put his cricket jumper on over your dress because it's cold, or possibly his giant rugby socks.

It's a slightly less glam Atonement, Life After Life (early scenes), Linda Radlett before she leaves Alconleigh.

Where can I find this stuff? Cabbages & Roses, some stuff from Toast, anywhere that does good tweed?

Following with interest!

I'd be setting up loads of saved searches on eBay for the individual elements I was trying to find. e.g. Toast did a great line in cricket jumpers and blazers and tend years ago and they afternoon come up.
Loads of high street ships have satiny slip skirts and dresses at the moment.

thedevilinablackdress · 05/08/2023 09:39

"tend" = tweed

thebabessavedme · 05/08/2023 09:50

aw bugger, now I want an oversized cricket jumper Grin

Beetlewings · 05/08/2023 10:04

No idea but I love your description!

Housewife2010 · 05/08/2023 10:16

A long belted cardigan is very pre war/Christina from Flambards.
Love your description. Makes me want to rewatch Testament of Youth for inspiration.

Housewife2010 · 05/08/2023 10:19

Once you find the clothes you'll have to update us whilst sitting in the kitchen sink...😉.

Floisme · 05/08/2023 10:27

I'm struggling to get past the thought of wearing your brother's socks op, that's just gross.

But anyway, if you've got the budget, I'd suggest Margaret Howell for starters - that should give you ideas at least, even if you can't afford it new.

House of Bruar tweed also gets a lot of approval although you have to get past the styling first.

I still see a plenty of men's Harris Tweed jackets in charity and second hand shops, (although I might be taking you too literally about wearing men's clothing?) - not so many at the moment, but give it a few more weeks and they should be out again.

There's also a thread on Dark Academia at the moment that you might find helpful.

I love this description, it's close to my style, although I'm more like the Disapproving Sherry-soaked Aunt with floppy dresses topped off with ancient silk scarves, chunky wool jumpers, boots and some good jewellery.

Anyway, I buy from Toast and Sideline for dresses, Carrier Clothing and Brora for divine pure wool jumpers in beautiful colours, Walker and Slater for tweed coats and boots from Blundstones or Solovair.
Scarves from nearly new cashmere or my mum!
I try and only wear natural fibres as it is so much nicer.
I tend not to buy cashmere as I or the moths destroy it.

Sherry is always Manzanilla or Amontillado and bought from Sainsbury's!

I've been dressing this way for years, I'm so excited that it's become a thing.

Yes- perfect reference!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions- I'll have a look. Men's jackets are definitely a good idea and if I can get something from a charity shop I could use the money saved to have it altered if necessary- I really like the contrast between normal size/over size.

Never heard of Sideline before- looks great. Belted cardigan also a fave.

Bump - I was enjoying this thread.

agapanthus1979 · 23/09/2023 08:59

Another bump for this. Loved this thread. Also loving the current DA thread but thougjt this deserved another look.
Thank you to Redlemonade for finding it!

PenelopePlant · 23/09/2023 13:41

This sounds amazing! I'd love to see some pics of your outfits?

Cinnamonandcoal · 23/09/2023 17:05

I'm loving this description.

I love the idea of a satin skirt with a cricket jumper also. Sandro do cricket jumpers.

I know this is a style not a literary thread, but you may also enjoy the book Weyward.

EllaPaella · 23/09/2023 17:22

Read the description in the OP and immediately thought of Rosamund Pilcher 'Coming Home' and the descriptions of the clothes of the main character, the mother and older sister of the friend she goes to stay with during school holidays at their huge Cornwall country pile. That's pre -second world war so 1930's.
Also thought of Sienna Miller and Keira Knightly in 'The Edge of Love' which is also 1930's and 40's.

agapanthus1979 · 23/09/2023 17:39

@EllaPaella yes - very much that look!
I would love to be directed where to get such items. I don't seem to have the knack of so many on here to find things and put outfits together.

AncientBallerina · 23/09/2023 17:42

Flambards ❤️

tothesea · 23/09/2023 17:43

I think I may have been a young women in the 1930’s in my previous life (half joking) as I’m so drawn to that time period.

I feel I MUST have read Coming Home at some point as it sounds right up my street but just ordered it as don’t recall the story.
Weyward also looks good
Fashion advice wise I’m useless but thanks for thread!

Anatomyofawaffle · 23/09/2023 21:53

Oooh op I love your description and I get what you mean, I love it.

HashBrownandBeans · 23/09/2023 22:05

I follow an equestrian account on Instagram who dresses herself and her kids like this, she quite often advertises brands so worth a follow for that alone, she’s called Callie coles

Shoopstoop · 30/04/2024 04:46

found this thread looking up Callie coles style! How about Pursuit of Love miniseries? It’s a very posh knockabout holes in your cashmere hons cupboard kind of vibe. I’ve definitely seen Toast catalogues styled in this mood in the past. in my head it’s a floral tea dress, belted cardigan, long socks, equestrian boots, soft, romantic waves around your face, pinned back but slightly messy hair, a flushed cheek (just in from the bracing air) and a stained lip (been eating blackberries) as an Australian it reads very British. Lula magazine is probably full of good editorials in this mood too.

aramox1 · 30/04/2024 05:58

Great thread! Just to say Flambards is pre WW1, Christina's aunt dressmakes and her clothes are full length Edwardian dresses or riding habits. Even the Radletts between the wars are in tidy twinsets and tweed suits, not boho dresses.

The next 3 books in the Flambards series cover the war and the early 20's. In The Edge of the Cloud she's enjoying her independence after eloping with Will, has a job, cycles and hangs out with the glamorous Dorothy so would have ditched her Edwardian clothes for something more comfortable and modern.

This company was my first thought.

Joe Brown may have some stuff.

Barbour May gave suitable clothes also.

Love the imagery in the op - I’m imaging Downton Abbey /Anne of Green Gables.
