Where do you like to shop in London?

Just out of curiosity. I'm going next week and I fancy looking somewhere new.

I'd also love some suggestions!

Martinisarebetterdirty · 05/08/2023 12:19

I quite like to wander up regent street and then look in liberty, or I go to the Kings Road in Chelsea. Marylebone High Street is nice for a mooch down to Oxford Street too.

Floisme · 05/08/2023 12:24

I don't live in London but when I'm visiting, I like shopping around Spitalfields. You've got the covered market - which gets more ££ every time I go but still interesting - a decent range of chains: from memory, Cos, Uniqlo, & Other Stores, Anthropology, All Saints, Whistles and lots I've forgotten, plus the second hand market in the old Truman brewery building and on Sundays, Brick Lane and Petticoat Lane outdoor markets too.

Or if I want somewhere naice with good (if expensive) charity shops, I like Marylebone High St.

Mercurial123 · 05/08/2023 12:34

Start off on Kensington High Street and stop off at Japan House and then walk to Notting Hill. Afterwards, if it's the weekend, carry onto the Portobello Road market and walk to Ladbroke Grove.

Harvey Nichols. There are HNs in other cities but they’re not a patch on the one in Knightsbridge. I have discovered so many great brands there. Most recently, ‘Faithfull The Brand’ - I’m obsessed!

I like Liberty but it can get very busy unfortunately, which detracts from the shopping experience for me.

Browns and Fenwicks are quite good too, and also Wolf & Badger and Sezane have physical stores in London, albeit with only a fraction of the range you find online.

frootito · 05/08/2023 12:37

I rarely set foot in a shop now but when I did and if I ever do now it's:

Liberty
Kings Road (starting in Peter Jones)
Marylebone High Street
Spitalfields Market

i HATE Kensington High Street (sorry). It’s a busy main road with the most random selection of shops. Not quaint or aesthetically pleasing, as the name might suggest. Great Wholefoods though.

AnnaMagnani · 05/08/2023 12:50

If you want exceptional charity shops, then you want Traid in Westbourne Grove, or the Royal Trinity Hospice shops which are largely in v flash areas. The ones on Kensington Church St and Portobello are unlike any other charity shops.

For fashion then Portobello Market on a Friday morning esp the covered area near the flyover.

Agree with this

Why be sorry we can't all like the same things. We usually drop by Leighton House or the Design Museum, and the walk to Notting Hill along the quieter streets, which have some beautiful houses especially when the wisteria is in season. Japan House is interesting and a good place to eat.

MerylSqueak · 05/08/2023 15:57

Thanks. I've been wondering about going to Portobello again. I used to go to a shop there that sold vintage kimonos for a song about 30 years ago and I bought a lime green 1940s suit that did me two graduations too.

Portobello's not the same as it was 30 years ago - if I go there now I have to let go of all those memories, otherwise I just end up carping and spoiling it for everyone, (including me). But it's still big and busy and a fun afternoon out, I think. Last time I was there, I found what looked like an old school vintage shop right down at the far end, but it had closed early so I couldn't look inside AngrySo if that's the kind of stuff you like then I'd head straight there.

GolgafrinchamB · 05/08/2023 16:09

Hatchard's then into Fortnum and Mason for a small treat. Most of the shops on Monmouth Street in Seven Dials.

Peony654 · 05/08/2023 16:12

Depends what you like! I like Spitalfields, and also Northcote road in Clapham for the charity shops

That sounds like exactly the place I bought my suit!

I'm not looking for anything in particular. Just curious and looking for new ideas. Although, if anyone e knows if a place where I can try on Nancy Mac jackets or the 100 stars black stork dress (or similar) I'd be grateful to know. I'm so sick of ordering online.

Fortnum and Madon sausage rolls are my treat of choice. £4 last time I went but delicious and keep me going all day.

Monmouth Street and Seven Dials - so much nicer than nearby Covent Garden. Plus nice cafes and bars round there too, because after an hour of shopping anywhere I've had enough.

I am boycotting Zara because the experience of shopping there, with the queues for changing rooms and queues for paying being so horrendous , is so unpleasant. If they want my money, they can make it nice to shop there. I used to quite enjoy having a nose though. Love your yeti description.

Good to know about Sezane and Wolf and Badger. Pity Sezane is in Notting Hill

The Easyinternet Cafe was an ELC before that wasn’t it? I remember! Also the market PC World is now on top of.

blueshoes · 05/08/2023 21:41

I like Spitalfields, like other posters said, for a relaxed open-air experience with many of the better mid-priced boutiques and stores there.

For vintage lovers, there is also the massive Brick Lane Vintage Market (in a basement) within walkable distance, with lots of food stalls.

TheCyclingGorilla · 05/08/2023 21:56

My daughter likes Brick lane and Spitalfields.

I'm significantly older, and buy most of my clothes online now, but if I do venture out it's to Bromley town centre, only because it still has a Primark, a Marks and a couple of shops my daughter likes.

I hate going into Zone 1 these days. Full of scam shops & soul-less vapid spaces of glass & concrete. So dispiriting.
