Where do you like to shop in London?

Just out of curiosity. I'm going next week and I fancy looking somewhere new.

Kings Road starting at Peter Jones. The Zara in Duke of York’s Square is the only
zara I can tolerate anywhere in the UK or US. It’s always been my favorite street top sip ever since the early 90s so I am biased but it is always the first place I head when I am back in London

Monmouth Street and Seven Dials - so much nicer than nearby Covent Garden. Plus nice cafes and bars round there too, because after an hour of shopping anywhere I've had enough.

I consider Monmouth St, Seven Dials, Neal St, Earlham St etc to all be part of Covent Garden.

WhereAreWeNow · 06/08/2023 06:58

It depends what you're after. For a nice time shopping and going to cafés etc, somewhere like Hampstead, Spitalfields, or Marylebone High St. If you want to go to big department stores, I would go to Oxford Street early in the morning before it gets too busy, go to the big shops then duck down to St Christopher's Place and Marylebone High Street once you've had enough of Oxford Street.
I haven't been yet but people tell me Battersea power station is great for shopping now.

i HATE Kensington High Street (sorry). It’s a busy main road with the most random selection of shops. Not quaint or aesthetically pleasing, as the name might suggest. Great Wholefoods though.

Agree. And it's also so much worse post pandemic too

WhereAreWeNow · 06/08/2023 07:20

Oh and Coal Drops Yard in King's Cross is very nice but not a huge selection of shops.

LunaTheCat · 06/08/2023 07:39

Oh so envious! Live in Southern Hemisphere and I treasure every visit I have ever made to London…. I just adore it!

MerylSqueak · 06/08/2023 09:17

Ooo good to know about Battersea Power Station. I love the building ( and the Albert Bridge).

One New Change near St Pauls Cathedral. Not a huge selection of shops but there is food and drink and near the former Bank of England and the City of London, if a spot of historic and tall building sightseeing is in order.

WhereAreWeNow · 07/08/2023 08:11

One New Change is nice, I agree. There's a decent sized Zara and H&M and you're right near the river and Tate Modern.

@SerenityNowInsanityLater
Oh I used to like going to Westfield and wander around. However since they removed most of the seats I really haven't the energy to go there now! I went recently to buy some food in M&S and I just about managed. Thank goodness for their cafe where I could collapse with a cuppa!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 09/08/2023 10:18

I tend to find most areas to be very similar with which shops are there.

@Floisme the last time I was properly in Portobello market was 20-25 years ago and it was much better then, more Indy labels and even on main drag you could get the odd gem. Last time I was there lots of imported labels.

Agreed with preferring Monmouth Street and Covent Garden.

@TheCyclingGorilla I’m near Bromley too and wish they’d put Cos, Arket and &otherstories there to save me going to eg Mingston!

yes yes yes plus Kings road is still nice and westfield mid week which I LOVE mainly because their carpark is so well signposted that you can actually find your car in it

Nitgel · 09/08/2023 11:31

i start at Ken high street too as it has Cos, Massimo Dutti, Uniqlo, Zara, one of the only remaining Jigsaws, Muji, TK Maxx, M and S, Hobbs and others as it's nice a relatively quiet compared to central london. I sometimes get the No9 bus into west end if I can face it.

MerylSqueak · 09/08/2023 12:40

I'm on the train there!

I'm going to do a few of these ideas. I'm still miffed at Sezane being in Notting Hill but may just have to make the trek as I have always been curious as to whether they would accommodate my broad shoulders but hate ordering online.

Could start at Coal Drops Yard in Kings Cross for a potter/coffee then walk/bus to Angel and walk the length of Upper Street to Highbury Islington Tube. Bottom end near Angel tube has Muji, Uniqlo,H&M. Then as you walk to Highbury the shops get fancier and more unique - so a great mix!

TropicalTrama · 09/08/2023 12:52

Battersea Power Station or Kings Rd mostly as they’re within walking distance or a short bus if I’m feeling really lazy! Occasionally Harrods as my kids love it.

Is there still a pet department in Harrods?

Thinks that’s next on my visit to north London. Sister in law who lives in Hackney loves all the quirky shops near Angel/Highbury and Islington.

No the pet shop has gone! But there’s a giant drawing wall in ralph lauren in the kids department, the big toy department and of course the massive chocolate room so it’s still fantastic rainy day entertainment for LOs!

viques · 09/08/2023 13:10

Mostly there are places I avoid like the plague. Like Oxford Street and Harrods. Both foul.

Regent Street is just about ok, super crowded though easy to nip into Liberty which is not as quirky as it was but has nice stuff.

Bond Street is amazing to see how rich people look! And elegant window displays.

I love Fortnums. and Harvey Nicks, and Peter Jones Sloane Square ( which is really John Lewis) for their restaurant with the huge window.

Marylebone High Street for interesting and unusual.

Kensington High Street still has a few vibes, but not what it was, Wholefoods is great though.

and honestly, that’s about it for Central London.

I am a Londoner and love it, but love it for museums, galleries, restaurants, theatres, transport, people watching. Not for shopping.

viques · 09/08/2023 13:12

Forgot Santa Maria Novella, worth tracking down, there is one just up the road from Fortnums, and another in Knightsbridge which is even smaller than the Piccadilly one.

I consider Monmouth St, Seven Dials, Neal St, Earlham St etc to all be part of Covent Garden.

They're the nicest parts, too. Floral St is my favourite for clothes shopping, although I never actually buy anything as it's pretty high-end. Good to browse though. Long Acre (adjacent) has all the chains and is less exciting.

lenalove · 09/08/2023 15:16

Kings Road for me, including the big Peter Jones of course!
