Anyone noticed how higher end make up has shot up in price?

I don't use a lot of make up and just replace what I use.
Mainly Bobbi Brown, Lancome mascara, Nars blusher, sometimes a little Clinique.

But it all seems to have shot up.
Mascara now £29 when it was £25, and everything seems to have jumped about 20%.

I always wait for discounts (J Lewis) but even so!

I've just stopped buying high end stuff,it's ridiculously over priced and I've yet to find something that I can't find just as good but cheaper - apart from Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation.

KPops22 · 04/08/2023 08:49

I bought a Dior eye shadow palette the other day and it was 48 pounds. Was 45 maybe 3 years ago. I do find though that by only buying decent stuff I don't fritter money away on odds and sods while wandering randomly through beauty products.

itsnothingoriginal · 04/08/2023 11:34

Yes! I guess it's in line with everything else going up but definitely hiking the prices beyond what I can afford.

I'll carry on buying the Laura Mercier powder (when on offer) as it's perfect for me and lasts ages. Also I'm going back to Clinique mascara as didn't get on with anything cheaper.

Otherwise. I've happily replaced my MAC lipstick with a decent Max Factor version and found a brilliant Garner BB cream.

I wonder if they might really struggle to sell higher end stuff as there are lots of really good mid range products and dupes around!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/08/2023 15:22

I think the standard of high street make up has shot up, it's such good quality these days compared to years ago. I can afford the more expensive stuff but it actually just makes me cross and I feel like I'm being ripped off... I'm looking at you Jones Road 😡

Bananaspliff · 04/08/2023 15:26

Yes. I bought a Dior rosy glow blusher recently, £34, used to be £28 at the end of last year.

Nw22 · 04/08/2023 15:30

Every thing high end has gone up a lot. A lot of brands have had increases of over 10% a year for the past 3 years.

youveturnedupwelldone · 04/08/2023 15:42

Yes I've really noticed it! I also replace my products like for like. I nearly fell over when I replaced my hourglass powder recently.

Andanotherone01 · 04/08/2023 15:45

I use the Clinique Super Powder as foundation. It used to be £28 and is now coming in at £34. I need to repurchase every 6 weeks ☹️

Flopsythebunny · 04/08/2023 15:48

It isn't just the high end stuff. I manufacture bath and body products. The cost of raw materials has more than doubled in price over the last year. Some have been unavailable for months

buzzlightyearsgloves · 04/08/2023 16:10

Yes! I went into boots and was horrified that the benefit 'minis' were 3 for £30 when they are literally the size of the free samples you used to get!

PurpleGreenandWhiteAreTheNewPrimaryColours · 04/08/2023 16:12

I tend to buy beauty boxes or kits, sell what I don't want on ebay and keep what I do at vastly reduced price.

I'd never pay full price on single items

DeliciouslyDecadent · 04/08/2023 17:17

Interestingly, J lewis has reduced the Lancome range and is promoting this on the website. Not sure if it's a permanent reduction but the £29 mascara is now £23-ish.

I have one Bobbi Brown Luxe lipstick that used to be £25 and I always waited for a 15 or 20% discount. Now, it's £35.

I can't get my head around paying £30 for a lippie.

Since I work from home most weeks I've swapped to the ordinary face serum for foundation and use my higher end stuff only for work days.

This is so true.
I can understand why the OP is annoyed though.

that is if you manage to find any suitable shades in stock!

DeliciouslyDecadent · 04/08/2023 19:40

I'm happy to try lower price brands but one issue is so few testers are around. I've used L'Oreal lippies before but it's hit and miss if there are testers in Boots and Superdrug.

I've never ever found a single lippie in the Boots No 7 range that suits me.

I'm happy to economise on eye pencil, eye shadow, even mascara, but because I'm pale I've rarely found a cheaper foundation or blusher that works for me. usually not enough range of shades. I found True Match quite drying and dull looking on my skin.

Happy to hear ideas!

Is it quite small? That seems expensive.

greenteaandmarshmallows · 04/08/2023 20:02

I love luxury and high end makeup but I'm making sure I really use what I have at the moment. I personally think it's worth the spend on my foundation but anything else I'm trying not to replace.

ScarletWitchM · 04/08/2023 20:14

Everything has gone up, I think in the past it’s gone up more slowly, like a £1 at at time, but lately it’s jumping up £3-4. It’s not going to come back down I just hope these prices stay and don’t go up again in a few months

Kdubs1981 · 04/08/2023 21:00

I rarely buy make up and don't really wear lipstick. I'm starting to feel like a need a lipstick these days with my rapidly aging lips and I have a wedding next week .So I went to Mac and let her try loads on me. I never asked how much. £24!!!! By then it was too late

Choux · 04/08/2023 21:07

I bought a Guerlain lipstick yesterday. £32. Am sure last time I went it was £26 or £28. Was not expecting it to be over £30.

Oh I agree with the No7 lipsticks, they look shocking on me. I tend to use a mix of AYU,Maybelline and Estee Lauder now. Fortunately lots of testers where I shop,it was awful until recently, how on earth can you buy make up without testers?!

Housewife2010 · 07/08/2023 07:23

Sign up to the John Lewis loyalty scheme, then you can take 5 empty beauty products and get £5 off your purchase. Details on their website. I got £5 off my last Bobbi Brown lipstick that way.

I've stopped using foundation completely. I use a high strength vitamin c serum and my skin is glowing with no blemishes so just use a bit of powder. I use quite an expensive serum, Sunday riley ceo so if you're looking to save money it's probably a false economy but if you get a cheaper vitamin c serum it could be worthwhile.

Yes was in a department store the other day and noticed this.

What’s good though is the eyeliner (Chanel) I wanted was out of stock, they didn’t have the Nars lipstick/gloss thing either (new).

I’ve discovered recently though, tubing mascara I can buy via Amazon or Snapscara. Under eye concealer is now Rimmel or Maybelline.

Nail polish all cheaper brands.

There is one foundation which is Maybelline Dream Satin, whenever I wore it I got loads of compliments but I love Estée Lauder and Chanel for that too.

I’m a sucker for a nice eyeshadow palette and generally I find colour payoff better on higher end makes. I mean if anything it’s good that Shu Uemura now don’t do single eyeshadows because I bought them like sweeties back in the day.

I suppose most people will pay more for something Hugh end like makeup if they really like/want it.
