Boden sale - there's literally nothing I'd wear

There's 70% off on the website and I also have £10 off voucher they've sent me. I've gone through every single item and haven't found a single thing I'd buy. The few semi-decent items are so short on the body, and I say this as a short person myself. But who over the age of 19 can wear such cropped items?? And now you have to spend a min of £50 to get free delivery.

Has anyone ordered knitwear from the new collection and if so, is it as short on the body as previously?

"Pull on trousers" Are there any other kind? 😆

I prefer mine fired on by cannon.

mumtumtru · 03/08/2023 18:15

I heard through a friend that ex burberry had taken over boden marketing so have tried to make ita bit more on trend I suppose. Theyve removed some of the staple sucesses (Chino Shorts in different lengths etc) and replaced with their own version and not done as well I dont think.

Jemimapuddleduk · 04/08/2023 12:56

This is gorgeous. I have it in the green, navy and black. I agree most of the rest is hideous at the moment.

Another who used to buy lots of Boden. No idea where to buy workwear now- I am a teacher and Hobbs is a bit too smart and too much polyester. I need nice good quality fit and flare knee length cotton jersey dresses with sensible but not too high necklines. And cashmere cardigans- used to get these from Brora (can’t now afford) or Boden (shapes and colours are now awful)

Have you looked at Jigsaw? I’ve bought a few things from there in the past in the sale but felt it was getting a bit too work wear for me, so they might have something for you.

TizerorFizz · 05/08/2023 19:34

I think fit and flare is dated and designs have moved on. However shirt dresses are easy enough to find elsewhere but Boden has ditched a lot of them too. I do like their shirts and, if you pair them with sharp trousers (look at the PM’s wife just recently) that works really well for most work situations.

Interestingly, there was a whole article in the Times today (or was it yesterday) about Johnny Boden realising they got it wrong and they're bringing back the catalogues and have a major campaign going along the lines of 'sorry we messed up'!

Enriquetta · 26/08/2023 22:46

Ha! I filled in a questionnaire for Boden a few months ago giving detailed critiques of various garments and really couldn’t find a nice thing to say about anything, it was vastly overpriced River Island. Johnnie has listened. And he’s realised the catalogues were essential to Boden mojo despite the cost. It’s an almighty tanker to haul around though … sales must have dived. Unsurprisingly

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/08/2023 22:51

I think lots of it has to do with the pressure to have new drops every two weeks or so.

Every retailer does now. It's hard to do that with well made, timeless pieces. So out comes the bright tat.

Thanks to this thread I found a nice dress in the sale, but by the time I went to buy it had sold out sobs

So, worth looking again if there is something you like but is sold out. The dress I saw when I posted this message on 2nd August was back in stock earlier this week in my size and I managed to finally buy it. I love it and it fits really well, after sewing the front up two plus inches as it was far too low for someone of my age and size.

So just case you're reading this Johnny, I'd like:

Clothing designed to look good on women, not teenagers
Decent fabrics that wash well
Colours that suit everyone, not just this season's hip shades
No floofy shoulders on knitwear
No mega plunging necklines
Favourite cardigans (both cropped and full length) to return, please!

Why not just shop somewhere else?

I’m probably twice your age, strongly prefer fashion-forward dressing, shop almost exclusively online and have about 100 sites saved to my screen. Boden has never featured in my dressing life …

There are other places to buy clothes!

What are your favorite sites ?

To be fair, I think the men's stuff is still quite nice and decent quality but I too have no time for tiers/frills/rubbish fabrics/cropped Tshirts and jumpers.

Problem is, I would be willing to bet that the main purchasers of the men’s clothes are the women already on the site looking at women’s/kids. If they have declined, then so will the sales of men’s clothes. I don’t think I know a single man so (even back in the day) would have gone to Boden of their own accord

Genuine question, what is fashion forward dressing ?

Gingefringe · 27/08/2023 10:15

Their choice of swimwear has been awful this year - dont bother looking if you have a bust. Very few flattering swimsuits and bikinis for the Love Island crowd.

olivehaters · 27/08/2023 10:38

At least you got a voucher. They have stopped sending me them! My kids all too old for it apart from the youngest who wears hand me downs. The kids clothes were good enough quality that they could do this. I wonder if they are now.

Guess have stopped looking for me because of that. Never bought much of their summed stuff but their winter knits we ok for staples.

adomizo · 27/08/2023 11:04

The kids stuff has dated too ...

RudsyFarmer · 27/08/2023 11:07

I think the problem is it’s so expensive, even in the sale. I don’t bother with the vouchers anymore as I wouldn’t buy the item even at the sale price plus an extra ten quid off (plus of course very often you can’t use the voucher on sale items 🙈🙈

Velvetear · 27/08/2023 11:15

I saw that article too and had given feedback to Boden as to why I don't buy from them anymore.

I love Jigsaw at the moment, in my local store they said they have a new designer who they think is ex armani she is also looking back at some of their 90s back catalogue. Fingers crossed they bring back a gorgeous brown leather jacket circa 1997/98 that I wish I'd bought with my first pay packet (ignoring the fact I am no longer a size 10....).

stripytees · 27/08/2023 11:21

There are some things I like, but don't love enough considering the synthetic materials and high prices. I'd rather buy cotton, viscose and wool elsewhere for less.

I too miss the old Boden with good quality basics and work wear. Used to love their cotton velvet and corduroy skirts and ribbed long sleeve tops.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 27/08/2023 12:50

@Wrongsideofliz I was going to say that I believe Johnny Boden has admitted this year at Boden was too trendy and hadn't appealed to his market
