Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

This thread inspired me into a dark (and light?) academia wardrobe for autumn. Once I've done the housework I'll post some pics and you can let me know if I've got it right.

I need a beret. STAT.

Yesssss, you really do 🧐😁 I can't be the only one walking about in a beret for the next 6 months.

helenahandcart78 · 08/10/2023 14:50

Just bought this today - will post any suitably DA pics...

@IndianSummer78 yay! We've snared another disciple 😁
Can't wait to see your photos. And light academic is welcome as it will have us thinking about next year 🤗

highlandcoo · 08/10/2023 15:08

@IndianSummer78 looking forward to seeing your photos!
@helenahandcart78 yes of course; we have much more to discuss I feel!
I will post a second thread before too long.
What a great conversation this has become 😊

@Divebar2021 Colemino looks great!
Not cheap though. These cable pattern beanie hats .. I knitted them for all the guys in the family during lockdown(whether they wanted them or not 😁) at a cost of around £6-7 and I see they cost about 10x that amount from Colemino. Wow.
Lovely traditional knitwear. I’m definitely getting my knitting needles out as soon as I get back from holiday. I have a finishing workshop booked at Black Sheep Wools soon which I’ve been wanting to do for ages. I do find the knitting process enjoyable in itself- very therapeutic - still, if you spend weeks of your life knitting a garment, ideally you then sew it up well enough to want to actually wear it 😊

As ever, I seem to be twinning with @helenahandcart78 . Our house is very old, with small windows and the reception rooms are all North facing. Spent years trying to brighten them up because you're meant to want light, sun filled rooms, right? But it never really worked. In the end, I followed my heart and had the reception rooms and hall decorated in a smoky navy, including the woodwork and ceilings. God, I absolutely love it, love it so much. Furniture is dark wood, leather sofas and a tonne of books in the study/library. Furniture in the sitting room is light grey, with cream boucle sofas, and a more contemporary feel.

Our bedroom is floor to ceiling Victoriana. Brass bed stead, dark pink walls, heavy Sanderson roses curtains and many, many gold framed pictures. I don't really follow what's currently in as regards interiors, I just have what I like and what makes me happy x

helenahandcart78 · 08/10/2023 16:42

@Bookist smoky navy sounds divine! My bookshelves are shoe-horned into the spare bedroom at the minute, pending my dream alcove shelves. But books seem to breed in this house, so there are piles of them in most of the rooms 😂

I found an intsa account called Dark Academia's Outfit instagram.com/darkacademiasoutfit?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== which posts some cool outfit pics!

Oooh! Colour? Fabric?

God, I'm now imagining how a beret would take me a level up in DA. And I'm watching Mona Lisa Smile and Julia Roberts looks so good in one. (I'm seriously nothing like Julia Roberts 😂)

RedLem0nade · 08/10/2023 19:57

Oooh @Iamanunsafebuilding love that site.

Any thoughts on where to find knitted vests similar to the middle one here from that insta page fellow Dark Academics??

It's a truth universally acknowledged that books breed like the very Devil! Also it doesn't help that books literally throw themselves into my basket every time I'm in any bookshop. Picked this little beauty up today. Don't actually like the poet but loved the colour of the cover <shallow>

You can never go far wrong with anything in dark green chenille x

helenahandcart78 · 08/10/2023 20:39

@Bookist yes, lovely cover and I would have coveted that too, but she's a bit too strident for me. I go more for a dreamy romantic poet. Although I do like a bit of depressive Larkin. And I have a major soft soft spot for Brian Bilston 😃

helenahandcart78 · 08/10/2023 20:41

Also, and this is major confession that could get me thrown off this thread 😬 but I am a sucker for historical fiction - Ellis Peters, Jean Plaidy, CJ Sansom. Love them!

Perfect! I'm now on a quest for berets. I'd like a cranberry felt one, which would take me into the festive season very nicely with a big cream chunky knit scarf. And would offset all the monochrome I have in my wardrobe.

Mirabai · 08/10/2023 20:50

You can buy cranberry berets on Amazon. I have one in my shopping basket as it happens.

helenahandcart78 · 08/10/2023 21:02

On the decor thing, the back of our house is south facing, so I go a bit lighter there. Cream and walnut kitchen/living room with cream flagstones. One coffee coloured armchair with footstool and a charcoal grey leather sofa (always covered with a blanket because: dog. Wood burning stove in the living room area. Black speckled work surface in the kitchen (which seems to be really out of fashion atm but hey ho!). Still lots of lamps, candles, throws and cushions.

I'm not ashamed to say it (well, maybe a bit cautious) but I do change up with the seasons. So there are porcelain pumpkins, autumnal leafy wreaths, twinkly lights, and suitable candles out at the minute. Cushions and throws are variations on red, brown, orange and mustard. In December, I will switch to more reds and bronzes mixed with cream and dark green.

New year is white and metallics. Don't know why, it just feels clean and sharp after all the clutter and heat of Christmas.

In Spring I start lightening up to cream, duck egg blue, some plummy pinks and a much lighter mustard (can you tell I love mustard 😂). Summer I go for cream and sage green but I still can't help putting a little plum touches here and there.

Well, that was probably very boring but I felt the need to share 🤣
I am very interested to hear more about everyone else's houses <nosey>

Arrgh - one's just spontaneously dropped into my Amazon basket. You're very naughty indeed 😂

@helenahandcart78 your writing reminds me a lot of this blog I used to read when blogs were a thing brocantehome.net/housekeepers-diary-63/ which is still going. I think you'll like it.

Who was after the vintage style knitted waistcoats? I was reminded of it watching All Creatures Great and Small…. They have them at Woolovers and Joules and no doubt other places but this place looks like the fit would be vintage not contemporary.
