Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

@BonjourCrisette wow, sounds gorgeous...so many things I never knew about and now want so much! Anyone up for starting a lottery syndicate? 😂😂

BonjourCrisette · 03/10/2023 21:33

Actually, thinking about it, this is probably the Dark Academia perfume par excellence!

MsAnnFrope · 03/10/2023 21:46

@tiktokoclock Secret History is possibly my favourite book ever. Tapped right into my dreams of Ivy League campuses on the fall. Sigh. Lancaster might be academic but not dark…

MsAnnFrope · 03/10/2023 21:49

Also a little obsessed with Dorothy L Sayers. I read Square Haunting about the women of Mecklenburg Sq and can envisage myself swanning about there in my DA garb.

@evtheria fab photos - I now have to have a long flowing grey skirt to wear with a black polo neck... I also love the picture showing the blue dress with the mustard cardi under the coat. Quirky but confident - may become my new mantra 😊

I am now a week in to stopping the nail biting and am looking longingly at my collection of dark polishes. Hurry up nails!!

I did have a blunt fringe for years but it looked a bit weird with the big white stripes that came through when I ditched the dye (looks better than it sounds - hopefully!) so have grown it out. Now I'm rethinking with your description.

In other news, I have ordered tortoise shell reading glasses - and a dark gold chain to hang them from!!! I will be oozing DA out my pores 🤣🤣

Well done on not nail biting. I had my nails re-done today, same dark claret colour as last time. Think this is going to be my nail colour for Autumn/Winter 2023.

I can't believe you're getting tortoise shell spectacles! Me too! Just booked my appointment at the opticians. Hadn't thought about getting a chain for them though, that is genius! Have just been browsing Etsy for the perfect one. Spotted a pair of stunning lorgnettes but think that might be a step too far and don't get me started on monocles

Bookist · 03/10/2023 22:38

Bookist it's so hard when your child is upset. She'll be OK and probably as you say it's for the best, but it's just getting through the hurt isn't it.
So, perfumes .. I'll be switching from Guerlain's Pamplelune to Jo Malone's Orange Bitters shortly. Now very hard to find so I'll be eking it out extremely carefully. I also have Clinique's Wrappings; equally difficult to get hold of so I'm being stingy with it too!

@highlandcoo thank you. It's so hard knowing that nothing can take away the pain except time. Still remember getting my heart badly broken at university, honestly thought my life was over. Met DH 9 weeks later (ahem).

Why is it so hard to get hold of Clinique's Wrapping, I've noticed this too? Clinique are notorious for discontinuing much loved products. I was livid when they stopped making their Sheer Skin Tint in 'Blonde'. It was my Holy Grail foundation for the Summer.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 03/10/2023 23:40

Perfume-wise I wear a body spray from Lush, Let The Good Times Roll. It's a warm, quite sweet scent, quite caramel-ly. I don't like being able to smell my own perfume but I always get compliments on it. I think it fits the DA vibe

SqueakyDinosaur · 04/10/2023 09:49

TK Maxx has had loads of Aromatics Elixir recently, if you want to stock up...

Oh wow, thanks. I was in there on Monday but didn't look at the toiletries x

helenahandcart78 · 04/10/2023 13:21

Good day to you all tribe!

Just nipped to the shop for milk and, as it is right next to a charity shop, I thought I'd drop in for a browse. More purchases!

Really pleased with the mandarin collar jacket. The caramel coloured top is Moschino and was £3.95! It's got ruched shoulders and an unusual neck line. And the burgundy polo will be a good basic as I have too much grey and black in my wardrobe at the minute. Okay, phew, I think I have justified my spending to myself!

@helenahandcart78 Love the jacket - I can see it being pulled off either with a really sleek modern outfit or full on Victorian goth.

You and @highlandcoo have the best finds! I love the black velvet jacket she posted too... Unfortunately the preloved shops and church-table sales in my area are more men's XXXL T-shirts and teeny little clubbing outfits from Boohoo!

JaneJeffer · 04/10/2023 13:34

I love that velvet jacket @highlandcoo

Mirabai · 04/10/2023 14:11

I wear Roger & Gallet for perfume - suitably old school I think. They’re lighter and more flower essencey than commercial perfume which I find too strong and gives me a migraine.

I recommend:

  • Fleur D’Osmanthus
  • Cedrat
  • Bois D’Orange
  • Gingembre
  • Tuberose Hedonie
helenahandcart78 · 04/10/2023 20:08

@Mirabai I am making a list of all these recommended scents and will enjoy having a good sniff of them all when I'm next shopping - thank you!

Yes, that's what I thought about the jacket. It could look old fashioned if you just wore it with black trousers or a skirt so I'm going to have a think about how to make it edgy and quirky...

Every so often I hear Dorothy L Sayer mentioned and I always think I would probably love her books. You've prompted me to put that book on my Amazon wish list at last - thank you!

helenahandcart78 · 04/10/2023 20:13

@bookist any joy on the spectacles chain? I've had a good chuckle at the idea of a monocle 😂

evtheria · 04/10/2023 20:29

I, for one, am actually all for the monocles or lorgnettes. We should all have one. Then when we spot a fellow DA MNetter in the big Tesco we can raise them to our eyes, and peer through (questioningly? ominously? your choice of DA vibe) whilst nodding knowingly to one another.

Darklane · 04/10/2023 20:52

@Divebar2021 totally agree about old St Michael's stuff. I never see any of it in the charity shops so I assume it is still going strong and being worn by the original buyers!
True!!! By me!
been digging out stuff from my wardrobe that I’ve had for years.
helenahandcart ( sorry can’t seem to fathom how to do bold print) that mandarin collared jacket is gorgeous. The charity shops near me only seem to have droopy T shirts & mens old things.
My go to perfume for years is Arpege, rich & flowery , Jeanne Lanvin from 1927. I can never seem to find a modern one I like.

RockyMountainSky · 04/10/2023 21:05

Hi all, love seeing everyone's DA outfits, so here's a couple of recent ones (all off EBay!) So happy it's autumn. Waistcoats and tweed!

And photos of my finds at the vide grenier the other day .. ba&sh cords in a really nice damson colour, a mouse grey ( can’t think of a better description although there must be one!) velvet jacket and a black velvet jacket. The fake-fur collar on the first jacket is definitely being discarded as a bit tatty.
I was trying to get away from black this winter, however I have a nice long black tweedy skirt so hopefully it’ll be good with that.
11 euros in total! I need to get back from holiday and see how I can combine them with my existing clothes now ..

Excellent jackets!

This is genius. Could I suggest the word 'owlishly' as the perfect adverb to describe monocle usage? x

Get thee behind me, Satan!

I don't have my opticians appointment until next week so I'm still perusing. Obviously I will need two sets, one in gold and one in silver depending on my DA outfit. Anyone else think that being an optician is a classic DA occupation? x

teawamutu · 05/10/2023 10:40

I'm WFH today so going a bit DA-lite: widelegged navy trousers in cotton jersey (self-made) which have turn-ups and PROPER POCKETS, and my beloved vintage Liberty shirt in Strawberry Thief tana lawn.

Should I venture out at any point, I will wear brown brogues and the Jack Wills grey-blue velvet jacket which arrived via Vinted yesterday. I was initially a bit disappointed because it's both fitted and runs small, but discovered today that it really works with slouchy trousers.

helenahandcart78 · 05/10/2023 12:59

@RockyMountainSky, love your outfits! Those jackets are gorgeous and go so well with the cord skirts. The colours are spot on too.
