Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

@RedLem0nade wonderful pics! The colours are giving me all the feels! That's my Sunday night viewing sorted ☺️

helenahandcart78 · 01/10/2023 11:59

With a nod to Mona Lisa Smile, my outfit choice for today.

@helenahandcart78 I'm not local to you but my DS lives on Newtownards Road in Belfast - tenuous connection 😂! We're from Wiltshire but he went to Belfast for a job after Uni

helenahandcart78 · 01/10/2023 14:41

@Iamanunsafebuilding I hope he likes living over here? I always weirdly feel like I have to "big up" NI when talking to non-natives 😆 It really is a great place to live though.

I had to change my outfit today as it is 19 degrees and full sun here. So I am now wearing my green culottes, a linen boat-neck top and a slightly miffed expression!

RedLem0nade · 01/10/2023 18:06

“Slightly miffed expression”😂😂😂

Mirabai · 01/10/2023 18:22

Was window shopping Ines de la Fressage collection for Uniqlo today.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 01/10/2023 19:11

@helenahandcart78 he does like it! He went from growing up in Swindon to uni in Liverpool which he loved, he spent 4 years there and decided he prefers city life. It was the job at PWC that took him to NI but he lives about 20 mins walk from the city centre and his rent is really reasonable compared to any city here on the mainland.

It was a bit of a culture shock and there are still things he finds out now that surprise him!! We've been over to see him a few times as well.

helenahandcart78 · 01/10/2023 19:14

I'm really pleased to hear @Iamanunsafebuilding! I live about 5 mins away from the Newtownards Road, and have worked with the local PWC office on many legal things in the past, so it's not such a tenuous connection after all! ☺️

Anything good? I'm not familiar with that brand at all.

highlandcoo · 01/10/2023 19:59

@helenahandcart78 and @Iamanunsafebuilding small world! I've only been to Belfast once and it was for the leaving do of a PWC partner .. I think in about 2012. It was in the Titanic building and a really memorable day.
We stayed for another couple of days, from memory in a hotel called Ten Square? Had a great time and met a lot of lovely people. I am officially a fan of NI.

In other news, I went to a vide grenier today. It's the French version of a car boot sale. In the past I've been lucky to find beautiful embroidered linen sheets however I'd heard this particular one was good for clothes. I picked up a couple of nice wee velvet jackets for 3 euros each, and a pair of ba&sh cords for 5 euros. Not bad! A bit late now but I'll post photos tomorrow.

And the discussion about the origins of DA .. fascinating! I'll ponder and add my thoughts later 😊

@Mirabai thanks for the heads-up about the IdlF Uniqlo collection. I love the tweed jacket and knitted waistcoat and I think I glimpsed a long cord skirt in brown too. Definitely getting along there once I'm back in the UK!

Just catching up but with nothing to add. Had to come tearing across half the country late last night because DD's long term boyfriend ended the relationship and she's absolutely heartbroken.

Mirabai · 01/10/2023 21:34

This in the grey tweed is what I had my eye on but it seems to be sold out already.

BonjourCrisette · 01/10/2023 21:57

That red cardi is pretty much identical to a lovely jumper I had back in the eighties. I was extremely fond of that jumper!

RedLem0nade · 01/10/2023 22:09

Aw @bookist😢

Your poor DD! We’ve all been there. She is lucky to have such a lovely mum.

Sending sympathy and hugs FlowersWine

Iamanunsafebuilding · 02/10/2023 03:24

@highlandcoo me & DH went over in May and we stayed in Ten Square! Small world 😊

helenahandcart78 · 02/10/2023 07:25

Morning fellow Questers!

Lovely to hear about the NI connections. Belfast has come a very long way in the last 30 years and is a fantastic little walkable city with lots to do and see. Ten Square is a great place. The Merchant Hotel is also very special - quite pricy I would think though!

@Bookist sorry to hear about your daughter but what a wonderful mum you are to drop everything and go to her. And restraining yourself from punching the nasty ex. She's better off without him I say ❤️❤️

I'm in the office today (now a euphemism for "oooh, how can I rock the DA look today??"). It's to be dry and fairly mild. Hmmm. I'm thinking wide trousers with loafers, a mannish shirt and a tweedy jacket. I want to wear a brooch dammit but my 2 are silver and I really prefer gold/bronze. Suits my colouring way better. Might just layer up some necklaces.

Ah, first world problems on a Monday morning 🤣🤣

Love to all!

Divebar2021 · 02/10/2023 07:26

When will it ever be cool enough to wear this in the SE? Just seen the forecast for the weekend is 23/24 degrees.

teawamutu · 02/10/2023 08:09

My office attire for today is a vintage St Michaels shirt with a grandad collar and toothpaste stripes; a dark pink pleated midi skirt in wool mix with excellent pockets; silver Oxfords; a double breasted checked blazer in black and grey.

I have a haunting suspicion I'm more ersatz Eighties than Academic of any kind though ...

Divebar2021 · 02/10/2023 08:32

Vintage St Michaels is such better quality than modern M&S. I have a cropped black velvet jacket which is so nice ( charity shop find). I just need to go somewhere to wear it.

Merryhobnobs · 02/10/2023 10:04

@helenahandcart78 my husband is from the countryside near Bushmills so NI is somewhere I am very fond of. Although we spend less time in Belfast than we did pre us all having kids. Used to love going to St. Georges market for Saturday brunch. Love the Linen hall library as well (I am a librarian). We live in Scotland but we are over often. Kids love going to visit Granny over Northern Ireland. There is a blog whose creator has a lot of DA vibes and is based in NI. Ihttp://www.aclotheshorse.co.uk/

The Miss Marple with Geraldine McKewan is absolutely the sort of thing I want. Gorgeous! It's on ITVX I think.

helenahandcart78 · 02/10/2023 18:43

@Merryhobnobs my mum is from Coleraine so I'm very familiar with that part of the world. All childhood summers spent in the caravan at Portrush or Portballintrae - fantastic memories of both. And we're planning a week up in a cottage in Portstewart over half term. Will be freezing and blowing a gale no doubt but I've no problem with either so long as the fire's lit in the evenings!

Right, sorry everyone, this thread is wandering all over the place, largely due to me 🫣😁

@teawamutu that sounds a really interesting outfit. Love the sound of the shirt!

@Divebar2021 totally agree about old St Michael's stuff. I never see any of it in the charity shops so I assume it is still going strong and being worn by the original buyers!

I do get very peeved with the way M&S lay out their stock in store. Why so many different collections? I don't identify with any of them, I just like what I like. Just split it into coats, jumpers, jeans, trousers etc. Annoys me every time I'm in 😆

Can't beat a bit of Agatha Christie on TV - for me it's the equivalent of a comforting hot buttered crumpet! Geraldine McEwan's portrayal does lean heavily on the beige though I think? Miss Marple needs to go darker - a bit of plum or racing green would bring a whole new dimension to her!

Bookist · 02/10/2023 20:09

Well I'm back home. It's so true what they say, that a Mum is only as happy as her unhappiest child. So I feel like crap! Didn't help that I barely slept last night, I had forgotten just how noisy student houses are.

But one tiny bit of good news. I managed to pick up a pair of grey/black checked, 7/8th trousers from White Stuff in TK Maxx for only £7.00. They fit beautifully.
