Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

Hello everyone! Please forgive my tipsy posts last night 🫣 Note to self: after the third glass of wine, step away from the keyboard 😂😂 Anyway, had a bit of time over lunch today and did a bit more outfit planning...
@Divebar2021 some of the glasses you linked to are gorgeous - I really do have to get reading glasses because of my Penfold vision but these are going to make choosing a pair rather enjoyable!

I was so happy to log on and see 50+ posts on this thread!

@helenahandcart78 your 'woman on the go' flatlays are amazing...

I have bought some new tan brogue boots, and at the weekend paired them with dark green wide-leg cords, black top and a tweedy blazer. And a satchel. And it was way too fucking hot. But I loved it...

helenahandcart78 · 18/09/2023 18:28

Come now @tiktokoclock, I need to see those boots, those cords, that blazer and the satchel...you've hooked me right in 😁😁

Today was a DREAM. First Dark Academia style outing of the year now that it's cool - midi dark green pleated skirt (that chiffon pleat with lining style skirt), bare legs, tiny dark green ankle socks, brown brogues that I have had for 14 years and fished out of the attic this month, and a burnt orange slim fitting cashmere jumper.

And my new coat arrived that I got for a steal on Ebay (image attached - it's slightly too big, so I'm going to see how much it will be to have a dart put down the back. I could even do it myself, to be honest.

Orange and brown and green - you must have looked like an autumn dream! Adore that coat too ❤️❤️. We're having really weird weather here -one minute dark and foreboding, then a massive downpour, then sun comes out and it's boiling! It's twisting my mellow man 😆

helenahandcart78 · 18/09/2023 19:25

I love the tones of that skirt. But I've tried tiered skirts before and I just think they're not right for my height. Tend to swamp me a bit. Could you tuck something in at the waist, do you think? Love her boots as well. And ... pockets! Swoon!

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 18/09/2023 20:07

Yes, could definitely tuck a top in at the waist. I have boots just like those M&S ones. 😁

I very happily put away all my Summery clothes today. I hate Summer fashion. And this Autumn I'm going all out Dark Academia. The beauty of being mid fifties is that you are virtually invisible and so can dress up to your heart's content.

Today I'm in a gorgeous navy blue cord smock mini dress from Fatface off Vinted (only £3 FFS) which I'm currently wearing with Wolford burgundy opaques and Oxblood brogues with chunky gold buckles. Tomorrow I'll be wearing a short, black wool kilt with a buttoned up cream collared cardigan, black opaques and black patent Mary Janes. Bizarrely my husband finds this librarian aesthetic very attractive but I suspect that's because I wear rather 1950s style underwear with it. So, stockings or holdups and a proper silk slip over bra and knickers. Trust me your clothes hang so much better over a silk slip.

MotherofGorgons · 18/09/2023 22:37

Wow all those sound fabulous @Bookist. I hate summer fashion too.

Katiepoes · 19/09/2023 08:45

@Bookist those outfits sound lovely! May I ask where you buy your slips? I seem to only find body shaping types or polyester here.

highlandcoo · 19/09/2023 09:10

@Bookist these outfits sound great! How do you feel about posting some photos? Only if you want to of course 😊

Sounds fab @Bookist !

I’m embracing DA today too. Oxblood pencil skirt with a leather panel in front, cream silk blouse, dark brown longline cardigan and my beloved dark brown block heel Mary Jane shoes. And of course my tortoiseshell specs (essential rather than decorative!).

I have a leather satchel, chestnut coloured coat and a lovely dark brown umbrella with wood handle. I just need to find myself some dark brown leather gloves!

Darkacademic · 19/09/2023 16:12

I too embraced the DA look today! Skinny dark green cords, white shirt and beige knit tank top plus loafers and trench coat, with a dark brown satchel. LOVING the autumn!

helenahandcart78 · 19/09/2023 17:49

Lovely! New posts 🤗 Hello fellow Questers! @Darkacademic and @Bookist you have me drooling with your wonderful outfit descriptions! I'm also interested in your slip recommendations @Bookist . Sounds like a silk slip is an essential.

Today was rainy but still mild so while out and about I wore cherry red jeggings, knee high chunky brown flat boots from rocketdog, a grey mint velvet jumper, and a navy quilted gilet from Jack Murphy (via TK Maxx). Possibly a little too country pursuits again, but then I'm rarely city-bound these days! I had on my beloved brown Radley cross shoulder bag. Really too small for all the crap I like to carry around, but then it keeps me strict on what I bring with me!
Would love to see some photos of others' outfits for inspo and musing purposes 🥰
What do we think of hats? I have a grey beret and a tweed flat cap bought on a whim at different times but have never had the nerve to wear either!
Hope you're all having a relaxing autumnal evening ☺️

@helenahandcart78 I can't do the flatlay justice!
But, the cords are like these (but last year's and more of a bottle green)

And the boots are these...

Those trousers are amazing. I've never ordered from Uniqlo before. What are their sizes like?

tiktokoclock · 19/09/2023 17:54

@helenahandcart78 pretty bang on for me. I'm an 8-10, and the small fits well, but with a little eating room.

Thank you. I'm a very in-between 10 and 12 so medium?

tiktokoclock · 19/09/2023 17:58

Yes I should think a medium would be fine in these... unless they are vastly different from last year!
