Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

I always ask for fabric composition and measurements in Vinted, if they're not already given.

MoltenLasagne · 14/08/2023 09:17

Absolutely miserable weather here but I'm actually quite excited to crack out my new cords for a more DA style look at last. Anyone else feeling similar?!

RedLem0nade · 14/08/2023 13:27

Totally agree! It’s like “ok, ok, Summer, you’ve had your chance now get out of Autumn’s way!”

I have a Brora cord dress that’s just waiting for some proper Autumn tights weather to be debuted.

Darkacademic · 14/08/2023 21:02

Yes, me too! Summer is nice but bring on the DA weather!

MoltenLasagne · 14/08/2023 21:11

So glad it's not just me. I think I'm just happiest once I can have a 3/4 length sleeve and boots.

mightymalties · 14/08/2023 23:16

Can anyone advise on the style of footwear to wear with long skirts? Wide/adaptive shoes would be a bonus!

Normally I'd wear my lace up black boots with tights, but unfortunately I need to reinvest after an accident left me with a rather wide midfoot.

I'm drawn to a pair of chestnut brown loafer style, but what colour tights - brown (if I can find any) or black?

My finger accidentally slipped on Vinted and I now appear to be the proud new owner of 3 long cord skirts, but I can't possibly wear them with the gawd awful trainers which are currently the only footwear I own that fits!

quirkychick · 15/08/2023 14:07

@Mirabai I didn't know Dune did Wider fittings, I usually find them too narrow - I have a high instep and quite square feet.

I originally misread that as Baker boy hats - I like those too.

tiktokoclock · 15/08/2023 18:15

I thought I was quite DA, but reading this, I'm not dressy enough. I think my style is more '70s college student who may be embroiled in a campus mystery at any moment'. Jeans, blazers, satchel, autumnal knitwear.

RedLem0nade · 15/08/2023 18:51

@tiktokoclock that’s what I’m aiming for in my day-to-day clothes. I’m more classic DA for workwear.

tiktokoclock · 15/08/2023 22:25

@RedLem0nade excellent, campus mysteries await!

Merryhobnobs · 16/08/2023 05:53

I don't own any footwear here yet. I definitely would love to in the future. It definitely fits in with the dark academia/vintage vibe.

Scored these (somewhat similar) Frye boots on EBay - and since it felt like November out anyway, tried them out in advance of autumn. Think they will be great with a bit of tweed etc!

@mightymalties Hotter (yes, yes, I KNOW) sometimes have nice brogues which would go well with a corduroy skirt. I have 2 pairs, one tan leather and one black suede/patent.

quirkychick · 16/08/2023 20:03

Those are nice @RockyMountainSky . I now have a grey, stork kimono from one hundred stars from ebay. I see why people like them, it feels like silk, really lovely material and quality. It's to replace a purple short kimono that was attacked by moths 😞.

mightymalties · 16/08/2023 20:40

@Mirabai those Dune boots are gorgeous! Sadly they're unlikely to be wide enough (I'm looking at the 6e-8e width fittings) but I might have found something similar on a specialist site. I didn't know that style was called Baker Boy, but it's a perfect match for what I'm going for 😀

@SqueakyDinosaur thanks for the recommendation! I once found a lovely pair if Hotter Mary Janes in a charity shop that I wore until they fell apart! My daughter teased me mercilessly about the brand, but they were so comfortable! I adore brogues, but can't find any in their extra wide range yet. Maybe the A/W stock will feature some so I'll check again soon.

@RockyMountainSky I love your outfit, those boots are divine!

@quirkychick - I think I might get one of those kimonos for my mother! Bit floaty for me but they look gorgeous.

quirkychick · 16/08/2023 22:01

@RockyMountainSky I was thinking of getting one for mine, too. I bought a short one, as realistically, a long one is not really my lifestyle!

Passerillage · 17/08/2023 13:55

I need a new bag for this autumn and as my overall vibe is dark academia, it needs to blend in but also be useful and at least somewhat rain resistant.

I think I am in love with this bag - https://www.etsy.com/listing/572834730/leather-tote-bag-with-large-outside - but just wanted to canvas opinion on anything along these lines that I might like but might have missed?

I want it with the zipper, large, cognac. What could be more DA than cognac, I ask you? 🤔

I've enjoyed lurking on this thread and doing some fantasy shopping... my contribution is this dress from Brora which is a bargain - I've just received my order and now I want all the colours...

@Passerillage that bag is lovely; Fat Face have done a bag similar to the mini version but I found the zip/short handles a nuisance, so it went to the charity shop.

The large looks perfect. Chefs kiss.

tiktokoclock · 17/08/2023 17:41

Excellent bag @Passerillage I was going to say it looks a faff with stuff falling out, but then saw you could have a zip. Winner!

MoltenLasagne · 18/08/2023 03:19

That bag is beautiful @Passerillage - I never thought of Etsy as a source of Spanish leather products. Another whole new (dangerous) shopping option has been revealed!

triggers34 · 18/08/2023 08:57

My wardrobe updates since reading this thread .
A white cotton blouse with 80s style lace collar supposedly vintage but it's brand new - via Vinted . I don't mind as I love it.
A Saint James brown wool jacket via a charity shop
X 2 skirts from a charity shop , 1 is long floaty early Per Una and the other is Damart fawn check
X 2 vintage skirts from Vinted 1 is wool Liberty print ( I haven't got them yet) same seller so absolute bargain of £9 including postage.
I am seriously considering the jo bear boots, as an early Christmas present. My go to boots at the moment I've had years and are actually hotter so they'll do for now!
