Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

@RedLem0nade best description of a fit ever 😁

RedLem0nade · 10/08/2023 08:31

The said skirt.

Mary Jane shoes haven’t arrived yet but I have mid heel tan leather ones that look quite nice with it.

That is gorgeous @RedLem0nade !
I am excited because I contacted the company with the cotton jumper I wanted to ask if it was coming back into stock, on the basis of whether I should wait/abandon all hope and it will be back in next week 🥳

highlandcoo · 10/08/2023 08:54

@RedLem0nade the skirt looks lovely and fits you beautifully.

@BangingOn the way you're wearing your stork dress sounds very much what I had in mind. I'm tempted to order one of the versions in the sale and style it like that myself.

@RedLem0nade that so gorgeous on you.

@highlandcoo great minds! I’ve found that thin, stretchy belts work best on the dresses, but I have a very pronounced hourglass shape so thick belts tend to look bulky on me.

Passerillage · 10/08/2023 09:26

Oh that's beautiful @RedLem0nade !

I'm watching a divine (somewhat similar but lighter) tweed skirt on ebay - will share if I will it!

highlandcoo · 10/08/2023 11:21

Good luck @Passerillage! I bought a Hobbs brown tweed jacket on eBay yesterday. Generous enough to wear a jumper under in winter I'm hoping. The collar isn't exactly what I was looking for but for £20 if it's not quite right I can resell or pass on to charity. Hope you get your skirt.

I've almost finished knitting this cape in a lovely tweedy mossy brown colour (City Cape by Purl Soho). I'm hoping it will look good in the in-between autumn months.

It's the biggest project I've ever knitted, but now I'm feeling more confident to make myself a fair isle pullover with the various leftover yarms in my stash.

This thread is giving me so much inspiration!

That's brilliant @mightymalties! I love the colour and it looks really professionally finished .. the sewing up after knitting is the bit I dislike, and it makes such a difference to the garment. In fact, I'm hoping to go on a course on finishing at Black Sheep Wools one day. They sell out really quickly and I keep missing out.

What stitch did you use for the main part?

Gorgeous Cape!

@highlandcoo splendid name btw
I tend to do things top down and in the round on circular needles, very little sewing up these days.
Great thread

quirkychick · 10/08/2023 13:29

@mightymalties that's a very lovely cape. I have a charcoal, knit cape I bought on Vinted last year, that gets a lot of wear.

I love the stork print, I think I may have to investigate the One Hundred Stars sale...

mightymalties · 10/08/2023 13:41

I can't take credit for the photo, it's a stock image from the pattern designer! I'll update with photos once I've finished and blocked though.

I used Highland Heathers in Moss by Stylecraft for mine, held double on 6mm needles. The main part is woven slip stitch, so there's no purling except for the rib sections, and it's a seamless construction so I'll only need to weave in the ends 😁

@highlandcoo whats the hat shop in Edinburgh please? I’ll be there this weekend and it sounds worth a visit.

highlandcoo · 10/08/2023 16:39

https://www.fabhatrix.com

I hope this link works @HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas.

It's in The Grassmarket (not sure if you know Edinburgh but that's in the Old Town down from the Royal Mile below the castle). Some other interesting shops nearby especially on Victoria Street.

If you buy a fab hat come back and show us! And have a great time in Edinburgh. One of my favourite cities.

I have the Tay. I have a large head and it's more than comfortable. Just need a lovely coat to go with it now.

Fabhatrix is an amazing shop. I have several of their formed felt hats which I wear in winter. There's far more in the shop than on the website.

There's a branch of Armstrongs (long established vintage shop) a couple of doors up. Godiva at 9 West Port at the other end of the Grassmarket is worth a look too.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 10/08/2023 17:28

Thanks, haven’t been to Edinburgh in over 40 years so am quite excited.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 10/08/2023 17:30

Armstrongs looks good as well, will pay that a visit.

NatashaDancing · 10/08/2023 17:34

There are several branches of Armstrongs.

I also like Frontiers in William Street.

quirkychick · 10/08/2023 20:31

I'm now watching a couple of one hundred stars items on ebay and Vinted 😳.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 10/08/2023 20:55

Velvet dress anyone?

RedLem0nade · 10/08/2023 22:01

Oh my god @MmePoppySeedDefage they are divine! Dammit!!

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 11/08/2023 00:31

MmePoppySeedDefage · 10/08/2023 20:55

Gorgeous.

Almost a different DA colour there for every day of the week!

BTW, I just spotted a Sophie Dundas black velvet blazer for £30 on Vinted, size 10, in case anyone's wanting one:

MmePoppySeedDefage · 10/08/2023 20:55

The website says that the velvet dresses go quickly - with all of us on here we’re going to clean them out!

They are absolutely beautiful and now on my “when I get to that size down” list.

MoltenLasagne · 11/08/2023 03:30

Those velvet dresses are beautiful but definitely out of budget!

I have a range of cotton shirt dresses I made myself pre-pregnancy 1 which I'm hoping I'll fit back into once I've finished breastfeeding. I now tempted make myself a velvet version that fits in the meantime...
