Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

Yes I thought more gothy, stern governess, navy, black, slate with the odd lacy collar, button detail etc

That's a great description! I have a purple, velvet coat with a massive hood that I wear in winter. It's very old, so definitely has faded, vintage appeal.

There are lots of overlaps, also see Dark Feminine and Dark Cottage core as earlier stated. The young ones (--well my Dd) tend to favour shorter textured skirts and voluminous knits. Dds tweed look trousers just arrived via vinted (£3 but only from New Look)

I love the Celtic and Co boots. I have a similar pair for dog walking from Kamik.

https://www.absolute-snow.co.uk/kamik-ariel-lo-womens-winter-boots very comfy.

Dog of choice is a Greyhound I think he's a very stylish DA accessory.

In my head DA is a range from 'tousled hair, layers of heavy tweed, dark jumpers and worn leather boots in the tiny and book-lined study of an autumnal New England college' to 'full on Hogwarts, wands and spiderweb rings, and you're Ravenclaw or Slytherin'.

Whereas regular or Light Academia is Elizabeth Wakefield at college... ordinary prep - light tweeds, beige chinos, tennis shoes and pale blue Oxford shirts, never rumpled looking.

I LOVE Dark Cottage core!
I've the whole collection of Rowan knitting magazines and several of the 90s winter books have this look.
Might dig them out

This is exactly how I imagined it .
So excited for the AW already !

quirkychick · 07/08/2023 18:40

@OrangeSpicedBun I love your boots!

I can manage the tousled (long, curly) hair and clumpy, leather boots easily. I can't do full on feminine style head to toe, but love to add in a bit of tweed and velvet in the colder months. I have a love of knitwear, too.

Catchasingmewithspiders · 07/08/2023 19:02

Im on the hunt for a pair of lace up winter boots this year, but they have to have completely flat inside soles because of my carbon fibre insole

So if anyone happens to see any lovely DA boots that fit the bill on my shopping travels, although my bank balance needs a few weeks to recover between house of bruar, vinted and @highlandcoo 's cos skirt suggestion 😂

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 07/08/2023 20:36

@Catchasingmewithspiders

You mean something like this in photo, but with no heel? Or longer boots?
https://www.jonesbootmaker.com/products/tyra-leather-lace-up-boots-sino34511-320-497?variant=40145547558975

These are specialist, totally flat for orthotics etc., amazing array of DA colours, but mega£££s 😮
https://conkershoes.com/product/derby-boot/

I would like something a little longer in the leg, but those second ones you linked to are the first boots ive seen with a completely flat insole so thank you, they are going on the payday list!

quirkychick · 07/08/2023 21:29

Actually, they look like the same model from Duoboots except mine were brown. They lasted 10yrs.

Catchasingmewithspiders · 07/08/2023 21:52

quirkychick · 07/08/2023 21:27

I adore those but it looks like there is probably a curve to the insole

I basically have a completely flat, none bendy piece of carbon fibre which sits inside the shoe so unless the inside of the shoe is also flat it doesnt work

I don't suppose you know what the inside of the boot is like if you have these? Its so hard to tell from a photo

quirkychick · 07/08/2023 22:12

@Catchasingmewithspiders I had a version of those a long time ago when I wore orthotics. I can't guarantee they are the same, but they were pretty flat.

Ooh really? I might risk ordering a pair then because I have seen those before and keep coming back to them because I really like then

I guess if the insole wont work I can always send them back

Catchasingmewithspiders · 07/08/2023 22:24

And thank you as well @quirkychick for confirming too!

quirkychick · 07/08/2023 22:25

I hope they work for you. I literally wore mine to pieces.

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 07/08/2023 22:53

@quirkychick, those are really lovely boots. I especially like the brogue detailing. Another item added to my Lottery win wishlist!

SoundTheSirens · 08/08/2023 07:40

Following this thread so that I can look up lots of the brands on Vinted / eBay. This is the nearest I’ve ever been to having an actual aesthetic and I never knew it existed! I have a lovely textured brown jacket I found at a vintage fair last year which I wear with my sales bargain House of Bruar midi-ish skirt and brown leather knee boots.

quirkychick · 08/08/2023 08:12

@MissoniIMPOSSIBLE (great name btw) both Duoboots and Celtic & Co are great quality. I walk loads and so my footwear works hard.

Some bargains here...although haven't looked at material /quality.

Do have to reign myself in a bit on the spending as I just won't get the chance to wear. I am trying to elevate my work from home clobber from jumper and leggings though....wool or cotton dresses with thick tights will probably work just as well for the Autumn.

The above might work for someone , I'd guess if it's vintage it would be size 10 , sadly won't fit me.

MissoniIMPOSSIBLE · 08/08/2023 10:42

@triggers34 Good spot! Vinted is my go-to.

@OrangeSpicedBun Their brown herringbone waistcoat looks like it will blend beautifully with a top of mine. Thanks. 🙂

SoundTheSirens · 08/08/2023 10:53

This is my jacket (can you tell I’m very proud of it? 😄)

Darkacademic · 08/08/2023 11:27

@OrangeSpicedBun That’s exactly what I’m trying to do! The wfh and weekend stuff is just leggings and tunic/ratty jumper and I want to feel good about how I look all the time rather than signing up for a lead role in scummy mummies just because “oh well no one sees me.”

quirkychick · 08/08/2023 12:51

@SoundTheSirens that's a very nice jacket.

@OrangeSpicedBun and @Darkacademic I add elements of this in to everyday clothes eg. tweed/velvet jacket with jeans and t-shirt or cord/wool mini skirt with tights and boots. I really like blouse/peasant top under jumper to mix summer style with autumn a bit. I often wear a wool or tweed cap in cooler weather as it's warm and helps protect from wind and rain.
