Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

My most exciting purchase last winter was a large fair isle scarf/shawl that had been too much even in the sale on Cabbages and Roses the previous year but I found on eBay brand new. It’s gorgeous. I will post it so you can admire it.

Mirabai · 06/08/2023 14:26

As above.

@RedLem0nade those are beautiful! Another thing to add to the list.

I love that! I can’t wear waistcoats as my boobs are too big compared to my waist - they don’t fit properly - I get round it by wearing fair isle knit waistcoats. Cabbages and Roses do them although I have to get mine preloved.

I linked a fairisle knit vest earlier from Vinted that might suit!

OrangeSpicedBun · 06/08/2023 16:00

I've got a pair of burgundy Solovair on order. (Like DMs but made in Northampton still). Will report back.

quirkychick · 06/08/2023 16:58

What a great thread! I used to dress a lot like this as a student and then when I was a teacher. I no longer wear maxi skirts so much, as they're not so conducive to lots of walking and being active.

I still lean into elements of this, though. I wear a fair amount of wool, tweed and velvet. I am more likely to be in trousers or a knee length/mini skirt as they're less restrictive. I have a pair of maxmara herringbone tweed trousers that I bought in a charity shop years ago that I wear autumn to spring.

mm47 · 06/08/2023 17:46

Mirabai absolutely love your scarf and kudos for holding out until you found a brand new one on eBay!

highlandcoo · 06/08/2023 17:55

@RedLem0nade I love the skirt! What are you planning to wear on your feet with it? I agree that a contrasting waistcoat would actually be nicer.

@Mirabai that is a beautiful shawl. I'm waiting to see what Cabbages and Roses have in their AW collection. Not sure when that's due to appear.

@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas that's such a lovely dress. The neckline wouldn't suit me (slight double chin threatening and somehow a neckline that echoes that shape isn't flattering) otherwise I'd be very tempted.

Oh these sound lovely!

@Mirabai I love that scarf/shawl, beautiful colours.

I also can't wear warm colours, but reds, burgundies, purples, berry shades, navy, grey, forest greens will do nicely.

highlandcoo · 06/08/2023 18:07

This is yesterday’s purchase from COS. It’s a navy wool skirt, very heavy so hangs nicely. Still deciding whether to keep it as I was thinking more in terms of brown and green shades, but I probably will.
(@Catchasingmewithspiders I think you said you were more of a navy person but not sure if this is your sort of thing)

That was me and yes this is very much my thing! Is that the knitted midi skirt? It's lovely

highlandcoo · 06/08/2023 18:41

Yes, it is. Long for a midi skirt but I prefer that. It does feel nice to wear - probably a keeper.

In other news, I went to a vintage clothes fair yesterday. Not hugely successful as the majority of the crowd were students, and there was a lot of streetwear especially huge sweatshirts with logos. I’d been hoping for charming tweed skirts and coats but no ..
I did pick up this white broderie blouse by Armand Thiery which is quite sweet

Oh that blouse is gorgeous - would be fab layered with a knit vest as well in autumn.

quirkychick · 06/08/2023 19:11

That's a gorgeous blouse - in fact quite a few on this thread. Great to layer under knitwear or a tweed or velvet jacket.

Darkacademic · 06/08/2023 20:36

@highlandcoo both the shirt and skirt are stunning and you have an amazing figure for them. So pleased for you!

highlandcoo · 06/08/2023 21:13

@Darkacademic that's so nice of you to say. I am actually holding my tummy in quite a bit! I'll probably be wearing it under a jumper or cardigan for that reason ..

Many thanks, that pic was only meant for me to see the dress and shoes together (so not very artful) but I'm glad to help.
BangingOn I agree, they belt very well.

smokingcarriageonly · 06/08/2023 22:05

OP I love that blouse, gorgeous detail and texture but a reserved shape and some structure. The holy grail!
This thread has rather taken off, I hope catching up doesn't empty my wallet 😬

I threw away my ancient, lovely Jaeger cashmere coat recently, as it had actual holes in it, and was dithering about this one. As it's £100 less than it was when I found it, I really should just buy it, shouldn't I?

@SqueakyDinosaur It would be rude not to!
@MoltenLasagne Yip, me too. 😬

I can’t remember who suggested the Knotty Ones - I have just worked my way down the list to the website but wow!

You owe it to the memory of the fallen Jaeger @SqueakyDinosaur
