Could I wear this for a wedding?

So, I bought this off Vinted for a bargain and wondered if I could wear it to a wedding? Would wear nice wedges and fascinator but, is it a) inappropriate because it's predominantly white and b) too casual for a wedding?

I personally wouldn’t wear something with that much white on tbh, not without knowing if the bride thought it was okay.

fanout · 22/07/2023 18:48

No one is going to mistake you for the bride, which in my understanding is the prohibition on wearing white/ivory. It's a lovely dress. Enjoy the wedding

NatashaDancing · 22/07/2023 18:51

Yes you can wear it. It's not too white and it's not too informal. That's the great thing about dresses. You could wear that as an everyday dress but it will also be fine at a summer wedding.

Here's another picture of it. It looks dressier when on.

Ooh yes that looks much less casual on than I was imagining. I would be careful what underwear you go for as it looks a bit see through but it's lovely.

continentallentil · 22/07/2023 19:00

It’s fine - it’s covered in flowers - definitely not white

It looks a bit clingy so check underwear isn’t going to show

Wedges are more informal so that will depend on the wedding

Chewbecca · 22/07/2023 19:01

Yes!

I like the red pointy block heels the model is wearing. It's not matchy matchy and they dress it up. Wedges are more informal, but as you say depends on the wedding.

Teapleasebobb · 22/07/2023 19:05

Thanks for the comments, @NatashaDancing thanks for posting the pic, it does look more formal in that one which is good! I am a fair bit larger than the woman in that photo though (the dress is an 18) so hope it still looks nice on me, I wouldn't usually go for a light colour but love the dress and thought I'd take the chance on a bargain!

@NatashaDancing wedding is in a large marquee in a family members garden so a fairly casual affair as far as I'm aware so smart wedges should be ok

NatashaDancing · 22/07/2023 19:09

It will be fine in an 18. I would wear a full slip (not a waist slip) under it so that it hangs smoothly. M&S have loads.

Enjoy the wedding.

NatashaDancing · 22/07/2023 19:10

And wedges will be fine.

SoberCurious2 · 22/07/2023 19:11

Yeah, looks good! Fine for a wedding imo

Teapleasebobb · 22/07/2023 19:13

So just asked dd18 and she said definitely not! She said if you were to describe the dress and it starts with white then it's a definite no Confused

Looks ideal to me.

NatashaDancing · 22/07/2023 19:30

Where is an 18 year old getting this from?
My go to on this thorny question is "what did the guests at Megan and Harry's wedding wear"?

Picture 1 unknown woman in very pale pink behind James Corden and for that matter James Corden's wife.

Picture 2 don't know who that couple is but she's wearing ivory.

Picture 3 Possibly Joss Stone? White floral dress.

Picture 4 unknown woman in white behind Oprah, and for that matter Oprah trussed up in an MoB outfit

Picture 5 - not M&H's wedding but Megan at someone else's- see unknown woman in white floral dress beside Megan.

It’s lovely. You won’t look remotely bridal in it. I second the full slip suggestion.

YukoandHiro · 22/07/2023 19:35

Put it with a ochre blazer or large scarf/shrug to take the edge off the white

Starhaf · 23/07/2023 15:00

It'll be fine! Plain white is a definite no, but there's plenty of pattern on it so no way that's inappropriate. Enjoy the dress & the day!

I don't think I'd start with "white" if I was describing it: the yellow flower pattern is its defining feature for me.

I think it gets a bit silly sometimes, the faux pas around dressing in white at a wedding is surely only if you could be mistaken for the bride.

That dress is perfectly nice and does not claim to be a wedding gown in any sense.

LookItsMeAgain · 23/07/2023 15:26

I tend to with the mantra that if you feel you have to ask whether you should/could wear a dress that includes white as one of the base colours, pick something else.

Sarvanga38 · 23/07/2023 15:28

It’s absolutely fine for a wedding, looks lovely.

Caterina99 · 23/07/2023 15:58

It’s fine. It looks nothing like a wedding dress!

Wear it with some bright accessories, it’s perfect for a summer wedding

CappucinoAndCornetto · 23/07/2023 21:52

That's why I posted the Megan Markle photos. There were people at her wedding (and the one where she was a guest) wearing dresses which were very, very pale bridesmaidy/ MoB pink (in the MN wedding etiquette rule book) , ivory and white with flowers yet anyone could see none of them were in any way wedding gowns.

The OP bought it from Vinted but the dress is Dorothy Perkins.
