Boden amelie dress

Until I can get the amelie Boden dress (pre order only at moment ) could anyone suggest similar please and similar price point?
I'm going for lunchtime cocktails in a couple of weeks and really would like something like this. I'm not going to a particularly fancy place but I'm old and thought this style is flattering and not too fussy! What footwear would go with it?

The navy slash neck dress is fab - I don't need it but am tempted to buy it. Do you know what their sizing is like?. I am a 10 but don't know if that is a small or a medium?

A word of warning. The 2023 Amelie dress is completely different to previous years. It is shorter, thinner, much lighter weight and the waistband is higher. I’ve sent mine back even after buying a size, and then two sizes bigger.

That's interesting!
I bought one last year and was really pleased with it. It's easy to wear, dresses up or down and - I've found - is extremely flattering to my apple shape. Your description sounds as though they've altered all the things I like about it.

Boden do seem to mess things around - I had another dress I loved, was so pleased to see it this year in a different colourway, but it wasn't any good at all.
Good luck, OP, and enjoy your cocktails 🍸

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/07/2023 19:32

@Elodie09 , the Amelie dress is fine. Not keen on the And Other Stories ones.
The Cos jumpsuit is OK. The wedge espadrilles are not my cup of tea.

Boden quality isn't what it used to be. Seasalt is good but it depends on the style and colour, some of it can look a bit too Seasalt.

It sounds like you'll look great in anything. Enjoy your cocktails.

Elodie09 · 22/07/2023 19:39

@NatashaDancing Crikey! Harsh on the Amelie dress but I will take advice.
I think I will also try a jumpsuit as I do fancy one. My sis in law is over 60 and she has a lovely one, strappy but her arms are really good.
I'd love to get a couple of fab things in my wardrobe and come out of my rut.
What lovely helpful posters you are, thanks again.

Four from Massimo Dutti - all around £80/90:

I need that navy one

NatashaDancing · 22/07/2023 19:44

My main objection to the Amelie dress is it's over priced. I have no objection to paying 100s for dresses. I'd be happy to pay Seasalt prices for their jersey dresses but there's no way I'd pay £80 for that Boden dress. It doesn't look as if it should be more than supermarket prices.

I’m also a 10 and can never tell with & Other Stories! In I think 2018 I fell in love with a mustard colour t shirt - actually tried it on in the shop (!) and bought the Medium. Decided it would look cuter in the Small. Went back and bought that too. Now I can’t remember which I preferred … Hmm

(I always think I’m a Medium in Arket, too. Then have to give the enormous thing away because it isn’t worth the trip to the Post Office. Perhaps that’s one reason why I shop so rarely at either place.)

One thing though - at that price the fabric is probably quite thin, so the larger size might fall more elegantly - as well as leaving room for the full length slip @NatashaDancing has so helpfully reminded us of. (They really do make a difference.)

Badlands1 · 22/07/2023 20:27

@WhatWillIWear
All very good advice. I think I'll order the medium. Also the model is in a small and I am definitely not as skinny as that!

WhatWillIWear · 22/07/2023 20:33

Thinking about it - if it’s something involving shoulders, limbs or hips I can generally rely on being a size bigger than the model, on almost any site. If it’s something covering just my trunk (strapless dress or swimming costume) I find it’s worth trying the model size. (I shop almost exclusively online.)

Akiddleetivy2woodenchu · 22/07/2023 20:34

I have several Amelie dresses from 4-5 years ago. I ordered the blue spotty one this year and didn’t even try it on. The material was thin and the spots looked like they were painted on and wouldn’t wash well.

RosesAndHellebores · 22/07/2023 20:39

Another fan of the Amelie dress here. I bought one in 2019 and it was so nice I bought the long sleeved version in the autumn and another the following summer.

It's a shame of the quality is now compromised.

itsyourrecordsale · 22/07/2023 20:44

I've got a navy Boden Amelie, think it's a 14 thought might be a 12 with the tags still on, never worn it it doesn't suit me. You can have it for £15 if interested.

itsyourrecordsale · 22/07/2023 20:46

Mine is not a 2023 one. I got it in the next sale last year.

WhatWillIWear · 22/07/2023 21:06

I need a new dress for a festival in a couple of weeks. Thought I had it all sorted out but inevitably doubt has crept in …

(As mentioned above, I will be taking advantage of my Senior Railcard to get there. And dazzling the populace with my chic French frock on one of the days.)

I’ve scoured the Boden site and cannot find a single dress I could be persuaded to wear. There’s one that bears a passing resemblance to my French dress - but it’s in cotton, rather than cotton and silk, and knee length rather than instep length, so 🤷‍♀️. Every single other thing is Too Effing Bland. Ingratiating. Designed by AI to make a woman look harmless and pleasant and inexpensively Stepford.

WhatWillIWear · 22/07/2023 21:24

I admit only the plain black would be ideal for lunchtime cocktails …

They’re all dresses that rely on the person wearing them to bring the glamour, or fierceness, or hauteur. There’s nothing little, or diminished or 🤮’nice’ about them. (Just looking at them makes me happy.)

LaMarschallin · 22/07/2023 21:37

Can you get the matching pill box hat and ball and chain for the striped one?
That would certainly up the fierceness level.

doglover90 · 22/07/2023 22:47

Gosh, I feel very 'untrendy' reading some of these comments. The dress looks perfectly nice to me. Not everyone wants a shirt dress or jumpsuit 😂

Are you drunk? Or role-playing?

WhatWillIWear · 22/07/2023 23:14

Erm … I own versions of two of the three dresses I linked most recently (same brands, different colours / years) - so perhaps I’m role playing as myself?

Mumsnut · 22/07/2023 23:32

I want to see rhe Parisian dress!!

What in Hades…these are giant shapeless bland tent dresses 😦 no thank you!

However, you are a good writer 😂

BeethovenNinth · 23/07/2023 06:32

I like the Boden dress. It is simple. There are options for brighter colours

the “stories” options look serious and boring. Dark colours.
