Cardigans Vs Jumpers

I'd really welcome thoughts.

I've always had a massive preference for cardigans. Both neat little ones and chunky knits.

I like the flexibility of being able to go up and down a layer without ruffling hair & earrings.

Are they always going to be either preppy /twee or slouchy?

Often the cardigan is an afterthought - is that the point? Are jumpers better?

or is it jumpers for winter & cardigans in the summer?

I like cardigans too. Alas I am reliably informed that they are frumpy and twee, and that they ruin an outfit. I find jumpers over tops uncomfortable and restrictive, so I'll probably carry on wearing my cardi anyway.

UndercoverCop · 18/07/2023 16:17

I love a cardi

heldinadream · 18/07/2023 16:23

Love a cardigan but have graduated to gilets. Not the same I know, but they just seem so practical and don't restrict airflow around armpits.
I think though, jumpers are more like dresses, a whole considered outfit, and cardis are more like jackets, can be added or taken away as an afterthought.

BuffyTheCat · 18/07/2023 16:24

I think it depends on the cardigan, and also body shape. Cardigans don’t do me any favours now that I have a combination of a large bust and menopause tummy. But I sometimes see a Sézane cardigan on some other woman, and it looks great. I also think cardigans tend to look better on women with longer legs compared to their torso length, but maybe I’m imagining it.

EmmaPaella · 18/07/2023 16:25

I love cardigans. I don’t care if they are not fashionable. I look awful in most jumpers!

minipie · 18/07/2023 16:27

Ohhh I much prefer jumpers, as with cardigans you have to think about whether they “go” with the top underneath. With a crew neck long sleeve jumper there’s no such issue.

I don’t think cardis are inherently frumpy. There’s lots of cropped, slouchy, chunky type cardis around at the moment which look up to date. The neater twinset style of cardi is probably more classic than on trend. But the same applies to jumpers.

UndercoverCop · 18/07/2023 16:35

@BuffyTheCat this is interesting, I'm tall but my height is in my legs not my body, and I am pretty flat chested. So maybe that's why they suit

Yetisrus29 · 18/07/2023 17:14

Cardigans in the summer and with dresses, jumpers (and really thick chunky cardigans) in the winter.

Why would you put a jumper over a dress anyway and what would you wear instead of a cardigan?

Tanaqui · 18/07/2023 18:08

Saw a gorgeous girl in baggy trousers and a fitted shortish cardi today, it looked great, so I think it's all about how the shape and colour work on you.

NatashaDancing · 18/07/2023 19:11

Cardigans. I don't own any jumpers.

User538765 · 18/07/2023 19:11

I only wear cardigans,I don't like jumpers

SwishMyCape · 18/07/2023 19:19

Thanks for the helpful thoughts. Got me thinking.

@Tanaqui yes to considering shape & colour

I think I need to work out how to wear my cardigans better.

Cardigans are better for me as they break up my large bust. I love jumpers but they do not love me. I think cardigans are just a classic.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 18/07/2023 21:34

I love cardis. My OH, doesn't. 😂 Tough.

CoffeeandStories · 18/07/2023 21:40

I own about 5462 jumpers but only one cardigan that gets used in autumn as a coat.

I'm a librarian so I'm morally obliged to prefer a cardigan 😁 (it's in the contract!), in truth I'm a jumper kind of a girl, I don't like a draughty boobage!

Peppermint81 · 18/07/2023 21:44

Cardigans definitely, way more flattering and versatile.
Jumpers are less practice - think of the Fleabag episode where she pulls her jumper off in the bank forgetting she has no top underneath Grin

Eribé cardigan

Your contract probably specifies something like this. ^^I have half a dozen in different colours.

I have the Molly and the Betty Palava Heritage cardigans. They are incredibly warm.

Both cardigans and sweaters here. Cardigans are more flexible since you can use them as a second layer, especially as our office temp varies throughout the day. Once you put on a sweater you are stuck with the warmth all day.

ChilliPB · 19/07/2023 08:01

The idea that cardigans are frumpy is in itself pretty outdated - cardigans have become a lot more popular in the last decade or so, loads around in shops like Sézane, Rouje and &Other Stories.

They are like any other clothing item - how they look depends on the style, the wearer and how they’re worn.

Jumpers only here, don't own any cardigans. But I quite like those really long ankle length plain slim fitting ones so they're not completely off the table.

StarlightLady · 19/07/2023 13:39

I have both. I tend wear jumpers quite tight fitting with nothing underneath (except a bra), where as I wear a cardigan for an extra layer, similar to wearing a jacket if it does not look like rain.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 19/07/2023 22:10

I have lots of cardigans, mostly short but some long.

My favourite is this one. It's perfect over dresses, shirts t shirts etc, but is just as lovely worn with nothing underneath like a jumper with buttons up the front, and no gaping:

hexsnidgett · 19/07/2023 22:43

I used to prefer cardigans, but now embrace jumpers. It's partly laziness as with a jumper I can get away without ironing the shirt underneath. Wink

hexsnidgett · 19/07/2023 22:45

£335 for a cardigan! ( it does look nice)
