I need a lovely coat this winter, anyone want to show me their best coat ever?

I know it’s July so may not get any responses as not exactly topical, but I need a coat this winter and am looking for ideas. I would like something a bit different from the practical puffer coat I’m replacing, maybe wool or even faux fur! If you have a coat you really love to wear do you want to share a link or a photo with me?

Another vote for Joe Browns - I'm on my second one (having purchased my original one from them & this and a second reserve from Ebay). It has 3 useful sized pockets (unlike the later models) and it rarely a week goes by without someone complimenting me on it. There are still lots of almost new "Fabulous" model coats still on ebay as it's a very bright red so people bottle out of wearing it.

Is the Joe Browns marketing team on this thread 😂

Suddenly half the posters are recommending these Joe Browns coats - I can’t see the attraction at all, the embroidery and faux military styling, the materials. They look so messy, confused and frumpy.

So many nicer coats out there - Zara, Mango and Stories tend to be good on the high street for wool coats and higher end Max Mara or Weekend Max Mara do amazing coats. The best coats I have are vintage, classic styles in wool or cashmere mixes.

I bought a Dryrobe specifically to wear after sea swimming but it's the perfect everything coat. Waterproof, windproof, warm, snuggly, long. The perfect coat.

A cross between dressy and sporty, these combine the technology of sports gear with beautiful styles and fabric, equally suitable for work, going out and active wear. I've had https://www.protected-species.com/product/waterproof-city-walker/ in olive green and the sight of rain still lifts my heart because I love wearing it. Not the cheapest, but the cost per wear has become very reasonable.

I'm in the same position OP. I think it is worth spending what you can on a coat - and going for wool if you can.

But also agree on lifestyle. I spend half my time at home, dog walking and doing the school run and live in a long lululemon duvet coat. I am so fed up with it now though.

The other half the time I spend at work going from meeting to meeting and need something smarter.

I got this Jigsaw maxi city coat which I like. It comes in different colours.

Probablysane · 15/07/2023 14:09

(I can't wear the belted coats - they just look like dressing gowns on me no mater where they're from )

Buildingthefuture · 15/07/2023 14:25

I have a lovely full length camel coloured wool coat from Hobbs. Bought it in the sale (last July) for £150, down from about £400/£500 I think. Bought it to replace my Jaegar one, which was around £900 but lasted 12 years! I also have a full length black teddy coat from long tall sally (I am quite tall and I like my coats to be long!) which was £90 I think, but looks much more expensive. Love them both, wear them often and they will last.

I love Protected Species coats, they're worth every penny and feel great, but I cannot believe that you actually wrote that opening sentence yourself.

I've got a teal-ish Hobbs Tilda, which is a very solid purchase if you want something neat and structured to wear over trousers or a shorter skirt. Also it has an inside pocket! . The Ted Baker looks great but would swamp me.

YesThisIsMe · 15/07/2023 15:04

This is my all-time favourite- at least ten years old from Jigsaw, tailored with a full skirt and a bow at the back. I call it my carol service coat, but here I'm at a spring wedding.

That's the problem with coats: ideally you'd have at least ten of them for different combinations of temperature/ precipitation/smartness of occasion/ length of clothes underneath. But they cost so much and take up so much space.

Weird - accidentally selected a few more photos while scrolling through.

This winter I’m definitely going to treat myself to a wool wrap over coat in beige, that Ted Baker one looks like what I’ve been imagining.

I do also need a fleece lined waterproof Parker though for walking the dog.

Tangopanda · 15/07/2023 16:15

Lovely coats thank you all. I want them all 😁

The Tilda is gorgeous but did not work over my bust at all. I bought a similar one from Jigsaw and paid a tailor to add an additional button further up in the end.

What I'm currently lusting after for winter is a proper Harris tweed coat - I have a blazer which is super warm and I want a coat! Possibly this one: https://www.thescotlandkiltcompany.co.uk/products/womens-harris-tweed-jacket-red-zoe

Sorry to disappoint you, @ForTheSnarkWasABoojumYouSee , the words in that sentence are from my own memory, based on what originally attracted me to the brand. It has never made any sense to me that there was such a divide between sporty, practical clothes and lovely clothes, and I love that PS set out to bridge that divide.

And yes, i do love a bit of marketing speak in my everyday life & can curate a cheeseboard with the best of 'em :-)

This isn't the exact one but I have Max Mara coats in black and camel. They are fabulous. No matter what you're wearing or what a state you're in they are an instant lift.

Also a black wool and cashmere double breasted, velvet collar flared Laura Ashley riding coat from the late 1980s.

Max Mara coat

There are several others which I love but difficult to describe and so old I can't find pictures.

I'd love a maxmara coat.my weight fluctuates too much for an investment piece like this

Badger1970 · 15/07/2023 19:45

I've got 2 very old and trusty wool coats (Jaeger and Per Una) that I love wearing but they're crap on wet days.

I'm eyeing this one up for this winter: https://welligogs.com/collections/coats/products/welligogs-perditta-navy-waterproof-breathable-windproof-coat?variant=31836597026880

Cant show. But Debenhams is my go to.

bendmeoverbackwards · 15/07/2023 20:58

I got mine in the sale in February, think I paid less than £200 👍

lordloveadog · 15/07/2023 21:06

Beautiful coats!

Max Mara fans - what's the sizing like? I have wide shoulders and much bust, so coats can be tricky

egowise · 15/07/2023 21:07

I adore collectif coats. I have two!

bendmeoverbackwards · 15/07/2023 21:15

This is my Reiss coat, it’s a lovely shade of red and goes with most things
