Are skater dresses too young / outdated?

Thenamesnotbond · 12/07/2023 14:45

I am trying to save money and found this dress in my wardrobe. Is it too short / young and ‘5 seasons ago’ for a person in their 40s to wear to a wedding reception?
If it’s ok, any summer shoe suggestions for someone who hates sandals / toes 🤮?
TIA

As a person in their 40s, you should give less of a fuck about things being "too young" or "too five seasons ago".

It looks lovely and suits your frame.

I don't have any shoe suggestions, sorry.

Great legs OP! The dress is ok, not the height of fashion but it fits well, is smart and you look good in it. Footwear would need to be sandals I think or ballet flats maybe?

ToBeOrNotToBee · 12/07/2023 14:55

It looks lovely on you.

Shoes wise I'm thinking something mauve/purple to go with the dress accents and will suit your skin tone.

Istbisreally · 12/07/2023 14:57

I love it!

Hazelnuttella · 12/07/2023 14:57

It looks really good on you OP.
An espadrille wedge is the most summery closed toe shoe I can think of.

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 12/07/2023 15:00

It really suits you ! Who gives a damm what season it's from
You've not wasted any more money
You look great in it and now you have a lovely event to look forward to !
What more is there 😊

Looks fab!

RebelR · 12/07/2023 15:05

Lovely. I have a pale pink pair of Birkenstock trainers I might be inclined to put with it. I also hate open toed shoes and refuse to be uncomfortable for anyone.

Tiredjoanna · 12/07/2023 15:08

If you don't like sandals go for espadrilles

LooseInTheCity · 12/07/2023 15:11

It really suits your figure and I don’t think it’s dated. I’ve seen lots of young women in this shape of dress this summer (London), whereas the last few years it was all midi dresses & skirts.

Thenamesnotbond · 12/07/2023 18:37

Half to hear it’s not too dated.
Thanks for the shoe tips, I will look at espadrilles and I like the idea of pink trainers but they may not be smart enough.
Also thanks for the complements. I totally agree that I shouldn’t care now I’m in my 40s but for some reason I still struggle with fashion and would hate to be ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ 😀

it doesn't feel particularly fresh and modern, and is very much the sort of dress I loved in 2012. but unless actively asked my opinion on it I wouldn't think twice about it

AmaraTamara · 12/07/2023 20:20

Peep toe would be nice (not fully open toe, just a peep) . Wedges or espadrilles would make it more dated imo.

SaccharineDream · 12/07/2023 20:36

cant see a young person wearing these. They are quite classic, i also suit knee/short rather than midi and wont be covering my legs for a long time!

itsgettingweird · 12/07/2023 20:37

Looks good on you.

I'd go for wedges with the toe front covered in.

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 12/07/2023 20:39

I think it's lovely! I'm 31 and I've worn these types of dresses since my early twenties and still do now, love them. You look great

OnTheRoll · 12/07/2023 20:42

I am the same age and body shape and I wouldn't wear it now (used to wear this style a lot when a bit younger). Seems that I am in the minority though so do wear it if you feel good in it.

ALittleBitAlexa · 12/07/2023 21:05

I think it's okay, more beer garden than wedding but you could get away with it. I think it needs a pointy stiletto, e.g. this

ALittleBitAlexa · 12/07/2023 21:06

Argh posted too soon, I meant these .

Sequinsandfrills · 12/07/2023 21:12

I think it's fine, it's a bit old-style but still very wearable/wedding friendly. It's maybe a wee bit short a style when compared to the midi/longer lengths which have been more fashionable in recent years, but still ok. You look good in it and that type of floral print has not really dated.

I would wear it with classic nude patent mid heel court shoes personally. I would not wear it with sandals, and definitely not trainers. The reason I would choose courts is because of the length of the dress - sandals combined with a shortish dress can sometimes look overly casual whereas courts provide some coverage/contrast and emphasise the fullness of the skirt. The combination of "neat feet" and a fuller skirt will never really go out of fashion, it's a classic. Espadrilles could work but they'd have to be chosen really carefully. A nude, closed toe espadrille with a smart cream blazer would be ok, especially for a summer wedding. The outfit definitely would benefit from an element of the formal/smart about it somewhere though (ie blazer jacket/hat/court shoes).

Sequinsandfrills · 12/07/2023 21:15

^^or closed toe, neutral slingbacks as AlittlebitAlexa has suggested (we are thinking along the same lines!)

Thenamesnotbond · 12/07/2023 21:23

Thanks for the additional comments. I do like the idea of the court shoes or sling backs but i think there will be lots of dancing so a wedge / espadrille might be more comfortable. I will be order a few and give them a try. Thanks everyone
