How to look more ‘current’

Dated2019 · 10/07/2023 19:44

I’m 35 and feel completely stuck - I don’t feel ready to dress like the classic expensive threads but feel too old to be in crop tops.

With covid / wfh and pregnancy and now a small baby I feel like I haven’t had to dress in real clothes for years and have no idea how to.

I feel very dated in floral dresses and vejas / denim jacket, even down to my sunglasses.

I’d love some tips on how to feel and look more trendy - and I know saying the word trendy most likely means I will be it!

I'm 35 and don't feel top old for crop tops whatsoever! I mainly shop in zara and h&m

Dated2019 · 10/07/2023 19:47

@AllOfThemWitches maybe I’m not too old I’m just too post partum 😁

I hear you OP, my c-section belly is not going to be seeing a crop top again I don't think.

I've been enjoying maxi/midi skirts with a slightly loose t-shirt tucked in or vest top when I want to look smart. Baggy light weight cargo trousers instead of jeans for the summer with fitted tshirts. I won't claim to be current, but it does seem to be a trend at the moment.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 10/07/2023 20:06

Don't wear a jumpsuit unless you have long legs, whatever Mumsnet tells you.

Rainbowshit · 10/07/2023 20:09

Wearing a cross body bag at a shorter length makes a look more current.

Also more current seem to be smart wide legged trousers or shirts with a vest top.

Wide leg trousers - cargos, wide leg jeans or wide leg tailored trousers with a tee/vest and trainers is my go-to outfit at the moment.

I also like the casual style fitted midi/maxi dresses that are around at the moment, with an oversized shirt or cropped jacket, chunky sandals or trainers.

JamSandle · 10/07/2023 20:21

I dont really like the current look so just wear what you enjoy would be my advice.

CSPS2019 · 10/07/2023 20:27

Slightly loose fitting basics in neutral colours with Birkenstocks/adidas gazelles = instant Danish chic (at least in my head ) 😂

Failing that get yourself on Pinterest and pull together a style board. Notice style patterns and repeated items and then get yourself on Vinted to find some gems to replicate these looks with

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 10/07/2023 20:27

True, but - if you are generously norked - they make you look triple-boobed.

dreamonlucid · 10/07/2023 20:29

Where is everyone getting the loose wide leg trousers from? I'm 5'2 and yet to find any in short person length.

squirrelsinyourarmchair · 10/07/2023 20:33

I feel like skirt length is key right now. I wore a knee length skirt the other day and felt like I’d time travelled from 2017. It’s all maxi or mini these days. Or jumpsuits.

You don’t sound that out of fashion thought to be honest OP. Lots of women I know still seem to be wearing flowery dresses and vejas.

florenceandthemac · 10/07/2023 20:35

I'm 34 and happy to jump on board the crop top trend
(FYI I do not have a flat stomach but with high waisted trousers I feel I look ok)

I've recently spent a lot getting trousers taken up

dreamonlucid · 10/07/2023 20:38

@florenceandthemac not the reply I was waiting for... 🤣🤣

You had me all excited for a second as I thought ohhhhh short trousers.

florenceandthemac · 10/07/2023 20:40

Sorry @dreamonlucid
I have, however, got a couple of pairs of the Topshop Petite 'Mensy' trousers from ASOS. Love them, high waisted but don't give the pouch that jeans do.
They sit nice on the waist and I can comfortably wear a crop top with them. Or bodysuit. Or anything!

I'm literally on ASOS petite as I'm typing! The relaxed design look like a good one.

Sorry OP! Hijacked your thread with short person problems.

Wear the strap from one shoulder to opposite armpit, so the strap sits above your boobs. Bag behind your back, where a rucksack would sit. Surprisingly flattering and comfortable for the large of nork! Particularly if it is a wide strap to balance proportions.

I get the iron on hemming. You fold the fabric, then iron and voila, shorter trousers. I sew a couple of stitches to prevent a wardrobe malfunction, but that's a 'no-sew' way of doing it.

😂 I love a jumpsuit or boilersuit (same age and post partum-ness as OP) - luckily I’m basically a giant! Easier than a dress for rolling around after a toddler and lots are easy for feeding a baby too, if that’s a concern. Wear with Birkenstocks or some “I’m off to run a marathon” colourful chunky trainers and one of those Uniqlo bags to complete what seems to be the mum look around here. I love it. Also agree re. wide leg everything, but it’s hard to find for tall people as well as petite. Not so fashiony when flapping around the ankles…

Sunnydays0101 · 10/07/2023 21:04

I think you can still wear the floral dresses since you have them but instead of wearing with trainers go for Birkenstocks or loafers or flat sandals.

If shopping, go for wide leg trousers or jeans, I find them surprisingly flattering and nice to wear and feel my slimmer fit jeans are a little dated now. Wear with slim fitting t-shirts or tops. Skirts seem to be everywhere - go for maxi or midi - which ever suits you best.

Notjustamum28 · 10/07/2023 21:20

I've just search 'Mensy' on ASOS (mentioned upthread) and I'm sorry but all those outfits/models look like they have just fallen out of a charity shop!! 🤣🤣

I'm aware its time for the skinny jeans to go but I can't bring myself to wear something like that 🙈

Also late 30s, 2DC, mum tum yada yada 😬

Notjustamum28 · 10/07/2023 21:22

also just want to add Midi seems to me a good length at the mo for skirts/dresses.

midi pencil type skirt with retro/vintage tee and trainers seems to work for me.

I have long legs (34” inside leg) and jumpsuits are terrible on me as well. Some are too short leading to odd leg length. I tried on a floral one, looked like I was wearing someone’s curtains! 😂
