Is there an alternative to toast and cos for short people ? Same quality?

Hi , absolutely love the winter toast dresses . Every single one have tried have been actually longer than i am !
i am five foot 1. I have a bust . ( 30 c)
toast dresses are always too long . There is no point buying , then altering due to the. Expense plus it wd change the proportions.

please could anyone tell me any good quality clothing brands for similar dresses that would have a toast like vibe , but would actually fit me

? For eg i saw a company called calm( before the storm ?) beautiful dresses but about 6 foot long and size s was bust 48 .

I'm the same height as you Always and have spent a life time trying to find fashion companies that produce dresses in a length I can wear. 'Petite' ranges tend to be a bit 'cutsie' for my style. I just want the standard Toast style dresses to fit someone who's 5ft 1!

Me too !!

I could but I'm time poor and can never get the fit right - always looks like a home made dress!

Check out Community Clothing. I think their dresses have a bit of a Toast vibe although I don't know about the length. They're also less expensive (but not mega cheap) better quality and made in the UK. Allow for the fact that they don't spend on A-list models, arty photography or fancy locations so everything may look a bit stripped down at first.

Floisme · 09/07/2023 07:37

I'd also ask on the 'Toastie' thread - they're fans of Toast but they talk about alternatives too!

Caterpillargirl23 · 09/07/2023 07:42

Have you looked at Poetry?
They have knee length as well as dresses that would drown me.

Scottishgirl85 · 09/07/2023 07:44

I've never heard of toast. Off to look it up! I'm 5ft and live in Seasalt and Boden petite.

faustina · 09/07/2023 12:22

I'm not sure if they have any styles you like, but this company have been on my 'must try' list for a while after following them on instagram. Prices seem very reasonable for what they do and you can order your own specific measurements

I'm 5ft 2, @Alwayspeckish , and I'm beginning to feel quite militant about the fact I just have to write off so many lovely clothes because of their length and general proportions. The average height of women in the UK is 5ft 4 but most clothes seem to be made to fit anything from 5ft 8 to 5ft 11. I keep reading about diversity on the catwalk - larger models, disabled models etc – which I totally support but where are the shorter models? We are just not represented. The few brands that do petite ranges generally make fairly dated clothes in 'ditsy' (ugh) patterns.

In terms of where to find stuff, I just scour websites because there are odd pieces here and there - there's no one place that caters for short women and does decent clothes. Trying to get a sweater dress in the winter was a nightmare, because they can't be shortened. In the end I found one in Brora, which does size things small, but it was horrendously expensive, even in the sale. French brands tend to be sized smaller but they have a lot of mini dresses and skirts, which don't suit me.

Me and Em (also expensive) does a lot of cropped trousers which can work as full-length trousers on me. Still annoying though, if I actually want cropped trousers.

evtheria · 09/07/2023 20:11

Watching with interest, I like many items from these brands (incl several at John Lewis) but am too short or small for their items.

octoberafternoons · 09/07/2023 20:28

Uniqlo occasionally has dresses with that vibe and they tend to be shorter. Gudrun Sjöden is worth looking at too although you need to look past the super colourful patterns and layering pieces... Seasalt petite range works for me as well.

MoreCoffeeAndCake · 09/07/2023 20:35

Oh, me too! I am short too and get so frustrated at not finding clithes that fit. It isn't juts the length, it's the proportions. Most tops and dresses are cut too long from shoulder to waist, so not a simple taking up of length.

Petite ranges are too ditzy. I liked Banana Republic when it was around. I've had some luck with Whistles, they do plain colours (I avoid the animal print their buyers seem to love).

Perhaps we need a short person thread, like the Toasties but for vertically challenged people.

MoreCoffeeAndCake · 09/07/2023 20:35

I'm visiting Italy in the summer holidays, planning to try shops there and see if they are better for short people.

RagnarRagnar · 10/07/2023 21:05

I feel your pain. I am a chubby 4’11” and found it impossible to find clothes to at fit properly and are interesting and stylish in nice fabrics. Dresses are impossible. I have one seasalt dress which I altered and one Brora dress which are quite small made a pp mentioned.

SparkyBlue · 10/07/2023 21:10

@RagnarRagnar I'm also 4"11 and like everyone here I'm getting so frustrated with the lack of decent clothes available

stevalnamechanger · 10/07/2023 21:11

Count me in on the search

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/07/2023 21:30

You might find Wrap
I stopped buying but because it's too short for me. I'm 5'8"

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 10/07/2023 21:35

It's definitely discrimination. Don't even get me started on the problems of reaching things on top shelves in supermarkets and trying to get a decent view at a gig! Short people are simply not catered for.

QueenofFox · 10/07/2023 21:41

The average height is only that because of older populations, I’m the opposite but find it equally frustrating that clothes aren’t long enough for me at 5’11 (toast trousers and jumpsuits are a no go and cos too small after one wash). Anyway, it might help to list the places that I love and would be desperate to be longer that couldn’t get - I think you want Japanese shops that only really cater for under 5’4 - muji, uniqlo, maharashi, trunk, second hand issue mayake, ki:ts in London but have that same vibe as cos and toast but a million times better. I wish different length options were available everywhere!

RagnarRagnar · 10/07/2023 21:43

Yea Uniqlo can be good and I have a few tops from wrap and poetry which are short bodied. But trousers and dresses still way way too long

curtaintwitcher23 · 10/07/2023 21:43

For me it's not just the length its shoulders, I always look like I'm a child dressing up in adult clothes and makes me look huge ( as in B-road not big I'm 5 ft)
I have been lusting after Toast clothes lately but they are out of my price range so it's good to hear they'd drown me anyway.
I used to live for Zara kids especially for coats because the fit was perfect but I'm too big for them now 😔

haribonoyoudont · 10/07/2023 21:47

For TOAST, maybe try Roake? Though their dresses are intentionally oversized, but they're clear about neck-to-hem length:
