Hypoallergenic lipstick recommendations

Anyone found the holy grail? I have generally dry, sensitive skin, eczema, and a selection of allergies (hayfever, latex, avocado etc). Almost all lipsticks I've tried leave me with flaking lips and a rash round the margin. I've tried expensive brands like Estee Lauder, MAC, Dior; and Boots No 7 which is supposed to be good for sensitive skin, as well as standard ones like Rimmel and Maybelline, all with the same result. I don't know what specific ingredient is causing it - there seem to be a lot of potential irritants.

I don't wear much makeup but do have pale lips and look much better with a lippy on, plus feel more pulled together for public-facing work events, so would love to find a brand which doesn't irritate my lips.

I'm considering trying Bell HYPOallergenic or Naked Minerals after a bit of a read-around, but before shelling out yet more ££ on lipsticks which get used twice and then abandoned, has anyone solved the same problem?

Just me in the chapped lip club then?

What about Burts Bees lip balms, they do ones with colour?

DesparatePragmatist · 07/07/2023 15:11

Thanks MrsPellegrino - have these proved to be non reactive for you? Natural doesn't equal non-irritant alas (had to give away expensive Only Curls hair products because the lovely avocado oil in it gave me awful scalp dematitis)

Have you tried Clinique?
That was my first thought
You can check the ingredients before hand
There used to be a great brand my DM used called Almay which was hypo allergenic

DesparatePragmatist · 07/07/2023 15:26

Unfortunately I don't know which ingredient is causing the reaction - I suspect it's a fairly usual one as pretty much every lipstick I try has the same effect. So I don't know what I'm checking for, but was hoping for a lipstick manufacturer which knows and us avoiding them! Thanks, will look into Almay lipsticks, I don't think I've tried them

Liking the look of Almay! I'm ordering some... fingers crossed!

Sorry to hear that, it's a minefield finding something to suit
I've had very sensitive sore skin for decades and wasted so much money
If I think of anything else I'll post

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/07/2023 15:36

Ah brilliant
I didn't know if they were still going
Hope they're suitable

DesparatePragmatist · 07/07/2023 16:03

I will report back with an update for anyone else asking the same question! Really appreciate the suggestions.

Hey @DesparatePragmatist did you find anything that suited? I have the same problem - I am allergic to lipsticks and get swollen lips. Have tried so many things but not sure what causes it so hoping something hypoallergenic might help

DesparatePragmatist · 16/12/2023 23:15

I didn't come back to update, did I!

I bought 2 Almay lipsticks after the recommendations on here - bit of a pain in the UK as they're not readily available so I had to order imported stock from Ebay at an inflated price. They're nice to wear, although don't stay on that long. I do start reacting if I wear them daily, but can get away with it about every other day, so they're becoming my go-to.

I've also recently bought a No7 menopause range (can't remember what it's called) lipstick following a recommendation that they're very non-reactive. I actually think I'm starting to react to that one though.

And I still don't know what the actual ingredient causing the problem is!

Good luck with finding something

Try something that's not lipstick, can you use lip liner (filled in of course) with lip balm over it ? Or get "lip blushing" which is basically a tatoo. Theres also beet juice or benefit benetint.

Burts bees tinted ones actually are the only lip product that I react to, love the clear ones though.

Ponderingwindow · 17/12/2023 04:40

Without knowing the ingredient it is going to be challenging.

based on what you are saying, it wouldn’t surprise me if you are reacting to shea butter. It is in almost all lipsticks.

I’ve had good luck with a lip stain from Anastasia Beverly Hills.

I would recommend the Skin Safe app or website. Given your symptoms, tick that you want to avoid fragrance and balsam of Peru. People with latex and avocado allergies often end up diagnosed with those allergies as well. I have a custom code there based on my allergy testing and end up with like 3 lipsticks, but hopefully just 2 categories will give you a list to start with.

DesparatePragmatist · 27/12/2023 10:03

Oh wow, just seen these posts! Thanks for the RMS link - will check that out. I've actually used lip liner as lipstick in the past and forgotten, so thanks for reminding me about that too!

@Ponderingwindow thanks so much for the Skin Safe tip! How have I never come across this before?! You clearly have been down this road and I'm sorry you're dealing with it, but really appreciate your sharing the wisdom. If I could zero in on what the problem ingredient is, it would help so much. Checking it out now.

Hi @DesparatePragmatist Have you had any luck with any of these recommendations? I have the exact same problem. I gave up wearing anything years ago but thinking of giving it another shot!

BusterGonad · 06/04/2024 04:54

If I were you I'd be buying from big brands such as Clinique, keeping the receipt and returning if reactive. You shouldn't have a problem getting a, refund, but just to be safe ask before purchase.

Ponderingwindow · 06/04/2024 05:29

Saw this pop up again.

Fenty has a lip stain now that is just wonderful.

BeautyTips · 06/04/2024 08:36

Thank you @BusterGonad I’ve tried this with Clinique, Almay, BWC, Body Shop, No 7 & Burts Bees. No joy. I’m wondering whether to try making my own with beetroot!

BeautyTips · 06/04/2024 08:39

Thank you @Ponderingwindow is Fenty known for being good with allergies/eczema?

There is a brand that's recommended for people with seriously sensitive eyes, I'll see if I can find the info as maybe the lipstick would be suitable.

Thank you that would be great - I have the same problem with eyes but they’re okay with tinting so I just have them done once a month so no need for make up…

BusterGonad · 06/04/2024 13:51

I'm sorry, I couldn't find the information.

BusterGonad · 06/04/2024 14:14

Lili Lolo has been mentioned a few times.
