Fabric softener- what do you use?

Hello I thought this would be a good place to ask as it's for fashion and beauty and stuff. I need to use fabric softner (sensory issues) but I have some really nice perfume and I want to smell of it not a mix of it and blue skies/gold flowers. Even the stuff I use for my kid smells of babies to me! Is there a fabric softener that has a more subtle smell?!

Smol. Doesn't leave a discernable smell.
It's also not made of animal fat like the others are.

Are they?! Ew

I fancy trying the smol - they look cute in their little box through the post.

Now I'm going to spend the day trying not to think of my clothes covered in animal fat

due to allergy issues a few years ago I stopped using fabric conditioner and don’t miss it.

badluckorbadvibes · 06/07/2023 08:40

The only ones that don't have a piercing smell into my nose are comfort - pure and the strawberry/lily one. All the rest have a really strong smell, not the fragrance but something I can't describe. When it gets in my nose I just can't function properly (sensory issues with autism)

kingfisher168 · 06/07/2023 08:58

Just use white wine vinegar - softens the fabric and cleans your washing machine in one go, and in an environmental way. Also doesn't smell of anything once washed so you don't have to worry about competing fragrances.

ThisIsTrifficult · 06/07/2023 09:01

Yep, same as pp. Soda crystals in the main wash, white vinegar with a dash of conditioner, only for smell. Use about 1/4-1/2 cup of vinegar and maybe a tsp or 2 of conditioner.

Porridgeislife · 06/07/2023 09:18

We use Ecover 0% fragrance and colouring as I hate synthetic fragrance.

CaptainSeven · 06/07/2023 09:33

I've not used fabric conditioner for about 21 years. It's a massive con.

Shouldn't be used on towels or bedding or anything with stretchy material (nylon, elastane, etc etc) in the fabric which by default means almost nothing left!

Could you get some wardrobe or drawer fresheners to add a fragrance perhaps?

HappiDaze · 06/07/2023 11:55

I love the yellow Lenor on my bedding and used it for DC school uniform

HappiDaze · 06/07/2023 11:56

But I don't really use softener much tbh

Some people swear by adding distilled vinegar in the fabric softener drawer

I tried it the other but forgot to check the results after

Yuck. How much perfume do they have to put in to overcome the smell of animal fat?

SiobhanSharpe · 06/07/2023 11:58

I like Smol too, you return the empty bottles to them to be replaced, or recycle with your own rubbish. I think it does has a fragrance but it's very light, especially compared with many of them.

costacoughee · 06/07/2023 11:59

Don't bother. Never seems to soften or scent

StarlightLady · 06/07/2023 13:22

I just go for whatever is on offer. The scent smell disappears in a day or so anyway. As to whether I am being conned into using it, to be honest, I don't know.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/07/2023 16:44

I've just bought some vinegar to try, we have such hard water our clothes come out like cardboard but I hate the softener clogging up the machine.

tootiredtobother · 06/07/2023 16:46

i don't use it, my washing machine repair guy said they gunk up the machine and cause problems
towels get the odd ride in the tumble dryer

cptartapp · 06/07/2023 17:03

Never used it.

Ibizafun · 06/07/2023 17:06

Never used it.. waste of money my laundry is nice and soft without it

iwantawisteriathisyear · 06/07/2023 17:06

Never use it. Hate it when someone wafts past stinking of the stuff.
I buy lots of stuff off eBay and from charity shops. Hate it when clothes stink of fabric softener. Sometimes the smell won't wash out. It's vile.

Topseyt123 · 06/07/2023 17:07

I've never used it at all. Total waste of money.

Schlomp · 06/07/2023 17:09

I've stopped using anything at all, just slightly upped the amount of liquid I put in the drawer and everyrhing comes out the same as before but no artificial smells!

Words · 06/07/2023 17:44

The only one I could abide was Waitrose cedar wood and jasmine. It's been discontinued. Obviously. Sad

SquashPenguin · 06/07/2023 17:48

Fragrance free ecover. The smell of all the others make me heave. No need for it whatsoever.

Does it not smell of vinegar?
