Flat shoes for an interview?

HigherStateofConsciousness · 29/06/2023 16:30

Hello, I want to buy some new flat shoes for an interview. I'm wearing a navy pair of trousers, striped top and linen navy jacket (looks nicer than it sounds!)- other than a pair of blue converse I don't have shoes that will work with that outfit.
Can anyone recommend some shoes that would work with that outfit- they need to be closed toe. TIA

Thanks @youarenotarealavery, I've got loads of loafers but they're all black! Do you think the shoes work if they're black?

Personally, I'm not a fan of black and navy but plenty of people do.

HigherStateofConsciousness · 29/06/2023 16:45

I was thinking the same but I'm worried that navy loafers might not work either.
I'm overthinking this.

It's important to feel good. I wouldn't go Navy - the one's I linked are both brown/neutral. Go with anything - at the interview and afterwards, when you get the job!

Thanks @youarenotarealavery, it's helped to 'talk' it through.

Firstly no black and navy is nonsense.
Secondly if your shoes are clean and polished and nothing outrageous no one will notice anyway.
Thirdly, despite having said the second thing if I were the interviewer I would notice and would think brown shoes were less dressed up than black.
Fourthly if you were a man I wouldn't think anything odd about your wearing black shoes with a navy suit but I definitely would notice, and not be impressed, if you wore brown shoes with a navy suit to an interview.

Sorry but the Ralph Lauren ones are awful. The huge logo isn't nice and the studs up the back are weird. My eye would be drawn to them and I'd wonder why you'd picked such unattractive shoes. It wouldn't have any bearing on whether you were offered the job.

I'm pretty sure all the younger, more fashionable men I see in navy suits wear them with tan/light brown shoes. Certainly the Italians I met at a conference earlier in the year wore navy trousers with tan shoes.

OP, what about a pair of light coloured brogues? https://www.tkmaxx.com/uk/en/women/shoes/heels/cream-leather-carne-brogues/p/25023821

AHugeTinyMistake · 29/06/2023 21:23

I wore silver leather brogues to an interview once. They looked great.

I don't think there's anything wrong with brown or black with navy but it's a bit safe.

Thebirdhouse · 29/06/2023 21:28

I agree that navy with tan is far more stylish.

If you can’t afford new shoes right now, the black will do. Perhaps cropped navy trousers and fake tan on your legs would make you look less like a nun?

RampantIvy · 29/06/2023 21:53

but it's a bit safe.

I would have thought that "safe" is a good bet for a job interview, unless it is for a fashion house.

Those shoes are nice and would be nice with a navy outfit. I'm still not convinced by navy suit and brown shoes. I think because I've seen so many trainees in recent years in terrible cheap looking suits and terrible cheap looking brown shoes.

Lots of men wouldn't wear black shoes with a navy suit. That's a very dated look!

TheDinosaurDuchess · 29/06/2023 22:17

Black flats are fine, brown flats are fine.

I have interviewed so many people, I can't recall their shoes, not one of them 😳 I do remember some "interesting" attire, but never the shoes!

I agree. I notice clashing colours like orange and purple, but shoes- nope, can't remember any shoes anyone wore. I also notice people chewing gum- pet hate of mine, and frankly, unprofessional.

"dated" has to be one of the most overused and meaningless words ever.

Its true though. A navy suit with black shoes is very old fashioned looking, which is fine if you're not bothered about that but as the OP asked on a S&B board, she presumably hopes to look stylish!

RampantIvy · 29/06/2023 23:41

I must be old fashioned as I just don't like brown or tan shoes at all.

I once read somewhere that you should never trust a man in brown shoes Grin

JaninaDuszejko · 30/06/2023 05:52

@RampantIvy probably in a PG Wodehouse book. The brown shoe rule for men is very old fashioned and based on the rule that black shoes are for town and brown for country and so someone wearing brown shoes in town is clearly of a lower social class and so not to be trusted.

@HigherStateofConsciousness I have several questions. What colour is your bag, what colour is the stripe in your top and what style are your trousers?

Whatever the answers to those questions are I think black loafers are a perfectly safe choice that nobody would remark negatively on. Do you have any smart lace up flats, those would be another option?

If you want to buy some new shoes then the colour of your other accessories should inform your choice. You preferably want to avoid being matchy matchy (although again a black bag and black shoes would be fine if those are your only options) and I'd ideally (from a fashion viewpoint) have a neutral bag with bright shoes or vice versa depending if you love shoes or bags more. With a navy suit the neutral options for a loafer would be brown, white, silver, gold or animal print but the fun bright options would be red, green, orange, yellow, sky blue or lilac.

RampantIvy · 30/06/2023 06:27

Thank you for the explanation @JaninaDuszejko. I knew it was from something lighthearted, and it probably was from a Jeeves and Wooster story that I saw.

VintageThoughts · 30/06/2023 07:35

@NatashaDancing

And yet I would imagine every single person on Mumsnet knows exactly what is meant by the term 'dated'. So 🤷‍♀️

Lindtnotlint · 30/06/2023 08:04

For an interview, if you already have black, wear black. May be safe (or even dated) but is perfectly professional and sensible and is not in any way going to hurt your prospects!

BarbaraofSeville · 30/06/2023 08:07

Oh, just seen the OP already has black shoes, so definitely wear those.
