What do you think of this dress?

I tried this dress on the other day but didn’t buy it because a) not sure it suits me really, I think I mainly like the idea of spoiling myself (it’s around £100 which is way over my usual price point), and b) even if it does look ok on me I have no idea on what occasion I could wear it.

I spent years with an abusive exH who wouldn’t allow me access to my own wages so despite having a lovely new uncunty DH I’m still getting my head around the fact that I can spend more than £20 on a piece of clothing which I think might be swaying my judgement about this one. It’s also a style exH would have absolutely hated which also gives me a “fuck you!!” glow but I know that’s not really a good reason to buy something I look crap in! Honest opinions welcome to help me find my style feet 🙂

Hmmn having seen the model I clearly look nothing like how the dress is supposed to look/hang so I think I might give it a miss. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received! 5’4”, size 14/16 top, 12/14 bottom, shit legs so dress has to be knee length or longer…

I think you could do much better. The colour looks dull and doesn't fit you properly.

Theoldgreygoose · 28/06/2023 00:58

If you love it, then buy it. What posters on MN think doesn't matter, it is you who will be wearing it.

I have no idea what occasions the dress would suit. Tbh the photo doesn’t quite do it justice but it’s so far away from my usual look that I think that’s what’s making me feel good in it, as opposed to it being the best style for me I suppose. Just wanted to know if I look ridiculous in it!

You don't look ridiculous in the slightest (and ignore that silly "Aunt Maud, spinster age 87 " comment which is so silly I can't be bothered taking apart)

For that budget and that style of dress have a look at Anthropology or Monsoon. That style of dress is fine, that's just not a great example of it. Or Gabrielle Parker?

I also agree that an occasion for wearing that dress isn't obvious. I wear dresses all the time but the cut out back and the floaty material means , for me anyway, that it's not an everyday dress but it's not actually that dressy a dress for occasion wear. The three I've suggested might have dresses you could wear as everyday and get more use out of them.

I think the style suits you but the colours do not. Do you buy warm foundation for your skin? The dress is cool colours - you need a dress with a warm yellow tone rather than a blue cool tone think - more autumn or spring colours.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 28/06/2023 01:22

The dress is safe and nice, you look safe and nice in it. You’ve got a KILLER figure and I think you could do better. Also those colours are very ‘don’t look at me’. If I had your fantastic figure I’d be wearing something brighter and more happy. X

I think it suits your figure and is very flattering. It looks great.

1035tg · 28/06/2023 02:25

The problem is mainly the drawstring. Tiers can be quite flattering but the drawstring makes it bunch and makes you look larger than you are. I prefer the Anthropologie one PP linked to (however in some of the pics the Anthro one looks to be extra oversized through the body which wouldnt work either). I like the v neck and slight puff shoulders of the allsaints dress.

blinkbonny · 28/06/2023 07:32

I saw this dress in FatFace the other day and nearly bought it, now I see it's on sale online (but not in my size Angry) - I think it meets your criteria for length etc so thought you might like a look

Like it! It’s the sort of dress you can wear on all sorts of occasions, dressed up or down. And the muted colour means you won’t feel to stand out too much - some of these floral dresses look great on the page but in reality it can feel too much (in my experience anyway!). So if you feel comfy in it defo keep it.

ThewaytoAmarula · 28/06/2023 09:02

You deserve to buy something lovely that you know you'll want to put on and wear straight away, and wear a lot all summer, and that you'll always associate with happy memories. This doesn't sound like that dress, though there's nothing "wrong" with it per se.

Turmerictolly · 28/06/2023 09:10

I think it's nice and if it makes you feel great then keep it.

ferretface · 28/06/2023 09:16

I love it OP! Am a fan of all things bohemian and prairie dress.

SoWhatEh · 28/06/2023 09:23

I like it but to me, those colours are autumnal. I'd wear that in September with 1970s style crinkly leather boots and a long floaty coat and scarf, just as the weather turns.

RavingStone · 28/06/2023 09:31

I like it! It looks comfortable and wafty that will mean you move nicely and happily in it, which will contribute to it looking fab.

Personally I think buying a dress your ex would hate is a great reason. Clothes speak to us on so many levels and something symbolic of moving into a different phase of life sounds quite powerful.

For longer dresses with room for boobs I have found Hush pretty good.

DollyTheFluffyOne · 28/06/2023 09:35

It is a very wintery dress so if that is fine for you then buy it.

MrsMarzetti · 28/06/2023 09:56

How many times would you get to wear it? £100 is a lot of money for something that next year might look very dated and frumpy ?

Dogsfirepitsandwine · 28/06/2023 10:05

I think £100 is a lot for a dress that you can’t think of where you would wear it. It’s nice but like others I think there would be a better suited one. My figure is opposite to yours, I’m a size bigger below than on top and dresses can be a nightmare.

love silkfred though, that have some lovely wrap dresses

how about something like this

https://www.silkfred.com/womens/clothing/dresses/maxi-dresses/jolie-moi/jolie-moi-kiera-wrap-front-maxi-dress-navy-floral

because of the big boobs, you would look amazing with something to show off your waist and curves.

I actually think it looks better on you than the model.

I think you look lovely. But if you're having to ask for opinions it's maybe not the one for you. Find one that makes you update this post with "I bought this today, just because, and I love it!"

Viviennemary · 28/06/2023 10:26

I don't like it at all. Dont like the material or the colour. I think it looks cheap but it isnt. But if you love it them go for it.

Hoppinggreen · 28/06/2023 10:28

It’s a nice colour and you have a lovely figure but the dress doesn’t do a lot for you I’m afraid.
If you can afford £100 on a dress or anything else then do it!!
But maybe not on that particular dress

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 28/06/2023 10:33

In stark contrast to @Hoppinggreen, I don't mind the shape but the colour is drab. Honestly I wouldn't keep it. I think the sleeves are a little voluminous for my taste but that's a very small, personal nitpick!

Creditcrunch2243 · 28/06/2023 11:07

It looks lovely on you and if you like it I’d go for it. Personally, if is was me I think I’d go to bravissimo and get measured and get some amazing bras and then get some lovely skincare or makeup. X

kafkascastle · 28/06/2023 11:09

It doesn't do anything for you. It's too milkmaid.
