Jumpsuit at work?

Jumpsuitlove · 25/06/2023 21:37

Does anymore wear jumpsuits for work?

I walk around London as part of my commute and don't think I've ever seen anyone wearing a jumpsuit. I'm tempted by this one: https://www.yumi.co.uk/yumi-navy-linen-button-through-jumpsuit-p12602/s69069?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=yumi-navy-linen-button-through-jumpsuit-colour-navy-size-12-colour-navy-size-12-ym2837b027-d&utm_campaign=product%2Blisting%2Bads&cid=GBP&glCurrency=GBP&glCountry=GB&gclid=Cj0KCQjwy9-kBhCHARIsAHpBjHgvU6c5jvRc7wMy3s3vlp_s-GQtKMmo44Hcydk8oiIcB30Z_SZcF0saAkuoEALw_wcB

Would it be weird?

I work in the city but for a tech company where anything goes, but definitely more on the casual side. Thoughts?

I wear them all the time but for the strappy just stick a smart T-shirt under it. I got mine from George £15 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Same here!

Just have to sometimes ask someone to straighten up the back of the straps that get twisted after a loo break 🙃

Whataretheodds · 25/06/2023 23:47

Your work, maybe. Perfectly acceptable for mine (major bank in the tech arm).

No chance. Also work in a bank.

TrishTrix · 26/06/2023 21:08

I do. I've got three the same in different colours very like the second Yumi one posted.

I work with kids in an environment where I have to look both professional and approachable. It works for me.

Wore one of them to a recent staff training day and got a lot of positive comments.

Toomanylosthours · 26/06/2023 21:14

I have one like this I often wear to work. Only downside is the toilets and back zip

I work in the City (but not in a finance/law firm) and people wear jumpsuits like the ones you have linked regularly, even the first one. Not me as my lower tummy is too big so I find them unflattering but other people do! I go for dresses instead which also avoid the need to match tops and bottoms.

Zola1 · 26/06/2023 21:23

So I'm very laid back with work outfits and tend to wear whatever suits my mood...ranges from a tulle skirt with docs, to jeans, wide leg pants and tshirt, right through to professional dress and shoes combo.
I wouldn't wear the first one unless I layered it with a stripey top or something as it feels too revealing for me. The actual suit itself is nice just a bit skin heavy for me for work

LaLaRaRaRaa · 26/06/2023 21:24

I was going to say a blanket no to jumpsuits at work but having seen some of these links, they are lovely and I would definitely be fine wearing some of these to work. I might get that Next one ! I had imagined some sort of 80s spandex thing haha . These are all fine for work I think if you’re in tech or if policy is smart casual

Strappy tops are totally inappropriate for work.

I have several jumpsuits I wear to work but all have cap sleeves as a minimum.

Zhougzhoug · 26/06/2023 21:31

Posters who have said they're not appropriate, what industry do you work in? They are very much absolutely standard office attire in every office I've been in the last 10 years (including but not limited to: charities large and small, university both lecturing and management, civil service, arts organisations, music industry, big 4 management consultancy, and public sector). I am baffled as to what the problem would be? Obviously they're not a suit, but surely you can wear a jumpsuit anywhere you can wear a dress?

PiIIock · 26/06/2023 21:44

Oblomov23 · 26/06/2023 15:18

@Whataretheodds
I disagree. I was NOT talking about my work. What I wear at my job is irrelevant here. It is my opinion and mine alone, and I stand by it, that no matter how casual and relaxed the dress code at your work is, the first strappy one is inappropriate for work. Hmm

Yeah, I don't think the first looks quite right for work. Second option looks nice.

I think it's the strappy top half, just a bit too casual for some offices.

Every work place has different ideas. Where I work, people in my department wear shirts and trousers. Meanwhile the program across from us west crop tops and band tees...

I guess the bottom line is go with your gut.

WunWun · 26/06/2023 21:48

There's no dress code at my work and the first one would be perfectly acceptable without anything underneath. People wear strappy tops and dresses with much thinner straps all the time. People wear bandeau tops and dresses.

If there is no stress code is absolutely fine.

flurbubbly · 26/06/2023 21:52

The whole "anyone who does things differently from me/the way it's done where I am is wrong because there's only one proper standard for everyone everywhere" mentality is so weird to me. I can't figure out if it's lack of intelligence, or just having had limited experience of life and the world outside of their bubble.

All of those jumpsuits would be completely fine and not remotely raise an eyebrow in my industry. In fact they'd probably be considered rather on the formal side, as my industry tends to skew very casually (ripped band t-shirts and either jeans or sweatpants). It's not usual to see famous industry leaders making 7 figure salaries in sweatpants or jeans. I usually wear either strappy or backless tops/dresses when it's hot, no one looks twice.

I wore these to work today because all my other shorts were in the wash, got some jokey comments/compliments but certainly not considered unusual or inappropriate for my industry. https://www.next.co.uk/g884627s2/c32128

Obviously there are tons of industries and workplaces where bare shoulders would be considered inappropriate, but only you know what the norm is in your workplace, OP.

Thanks for all the responses! Some of them made me second guess myself as I'm pretty sure I have worn strappy tops many times at work before (at this workplace and previous), I don't know if I'm misremembering now!

In any case I am quite sure noone would bat an eyelid, I often see people wear things that I personally find quite daring/revealing and noone cares.

But as I like to be as unnoticed as possible I've not ordered number 1. I've ordered number 3 and if its no good I'll fork out and order number 2. I gave up on the Next one as PP said it was very long (thanks for saving me a trip to Next!).

The yumi one is totally inappropriate for work.

Depends where you work? A barrister wouldn't wear it , a children's tv presenter might.

Wonderingifitsjustme · 26/06/2023 22:33

I wear jeans to work but not jumpsuits or dungarees.

LaLaRaRaRaa · 28/06/2023 22:29

Really does depend on the workplace , but also the level. Junior levels would be absolutely fine in the first strappy option in several of the places I’ve worked (not all). They’d be considered quite cool and stylish. If more senior role, it would still be borderline ok but I would pair it with a linen blazer / jacket to be on the safe side.

I wouldn’t put a t-shirt under straps!! It ruins the straps look and also makes even skinny people look chunkier than they are.

If you need to put a T-shirt under straps, then wear something else . Probably others won’t agree but I have strong feelings about this lol.

Rosti1981 · 29/06/2023 07:04

I've got a Seasalt navy one that buttons at the front and has shoulders covered (I wouldn't feel comfy with straps personally at work, unless I decided to wear a blazer or cardi all day... Though not sure anyone would actually care in my work!). I haven't worn it to the office yet but I might do so next week as it's really comfortable and because plain navy fairly smart, and it's cotton/breathable. It's an old one but fairly sure Seasalt still make it

Rosti1981 · 29/06/2023 07:09

This is mine in dark navy https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/rose-trellis-cotton-modal-wide-leg-jumpsuit

Though now I look at it not sure if it's a bit baggy. But on me I don't think it's quite so baggy and you can draw in the waist to shape it.
It is comfy!

JustFrustrated · 29/06/2023 07:10

Why are shoulders inappropriate?

LlynTegid · 29/06/2023 07:14

Seen it occasionally.

Riktik89 · 29/06/2023 20:03

100%. I work in an office and had on my jumpsuit yesterday...changed into heels so still looked professional. Go for it X

JanesBlond · 29/06/2023 23:06

Today someone I work with wore a black jumpsuit very similar to the ones posted on this thread and now I’m wondering if she’s one of you 👀
