Quirky maxi dress for wedding?

My head in exploding trying to find the right dress for a wedding in September. Medium sized, fairly formal stately home kind of place, and I will be a witness.

I'm 50, a size 22 and only 5ft 2, but as I will be wearing flats, I would like maxi, or long midi dress. Boho or 70's kind of vibe but not too casual. I'm quite the barrel shape, so things fitted at the waist really don't suit me - an empire type line is best really - nothing that even threatens to highlight my stomach! Not sleeveless, but flappy sleeves would drive me potty!

I like colours and patterns - but I'm not a flowery type. Orange is my favourite colour, or mustard yellows.

I'm trying to find something interesting! And that's proving difficult. Any ideas?!

What about this, OP? It’s marvellous.

Lush!! But quite out of my price range!!

Also. Backless dresses.. never quite sure what to do about bra! LOL

Haha! I actually have that dress! Wear it dressed down though but love it

It's the complete opposite of what she asked for and is more suited to a funeral

I only said they were my favourite colours - it wasn't a must be... Sometimes posting something left field works!

But I don't think black would be.. approved of at this wedding. Mother of bride is a huge inverted snob!!

This is the dress.

Love the print, but I know that shape would do nothing for me sadly.

I also hate flouncy/long/ruffled sleeves. I take them to a tailor in the dry cleaners and have them taken in/shortened so they become narrow and elbow length. It normally costs around £15 (london price) If the tailor ever said it couldn't be done (hasn't happened yet) the dress would go right back to the shop.

I've ordered two from Heritage clothing to pick the one I like best! I'm even tempted by trying a non maxi from there!! Going to see what the maxi's are like first.

Will keep you updated. Thanks everyone!!! Found some new brands to keep an eye on too which is great

Sahara are brilliant and there are some lovely things on eBay from there that aren't too pricey. Definitely forgiving and flatteringly cut shapes if you don't want clingy and gorgeous materials

Like this one, size 4... for £59.99 at the moment. 5 would probably be better for you but gives you an idea of what's out there

I love Izabel London and often find I have to go down a size or two to get it to fit so you might find an 18 fits you fine. They also have Izabel Curve which is their range for larger sizes. I find they tend to do lots of empire line with wrap fronts to make your boobs look fantastic and their dresses aren't too long. I'm not sure if mine are midi or maxi though 😂 but ankle length. Some department stores stock them but they also have a website. There are too many orange and yellow dresses to show you.

This thread is going to bankrupt me. I have added it to my watch list as I need a dress for September and most of these look fab.

So the two dresses I ordered from Heritage arrived this week!

One was a hi-low one which is gorgeous, but the front sits on my knee's and I'm a bit self conscious about that. It's stunning though and very different to anything I own.

The off shoulder maxi also arrived, and while it is very very too long (easy to shorten) it's absolutely stunning and I feel great in it. I could probably get away with a size down, but would need to wear spanx and I'd rather be comfortable than do that! But I really really love it.

But going round a friends with them over the weekend for her opinion. I don't want my insecurities to dismiss the hi-low dress with a sensible opinion from someone else!

Oooo. Glad you've got options! I'd say keep them both. So hard to find something these days.

NatashaDancing · 06/07/2023 20:12

Heritage dresses and jackets are stunning.
