Air drying fine wavy hair to not frizz

JoanDarc · 15/06/2023 17:13

I’ve got fine (but lots of it) highlighted long hair. I can dry/wave it to look good with heat/ product but it always looks a state when left to air dry- a kind of mix of frizzy kinky cotton wool waves.
away on holiday next week and would love to be able to air dry. Any tips for product/ method for those with similar hair?

Following for advice!

I put mine in a plait to dry and then tease out with my fingers. Leave in conditioner or oil helps it to stop frizzing.

pineapple360 · 15/06/2023 17:21

If you find out, tell me how!!!

IndianSummer78 · 15/06/2023 17:29

Grapefruit sized palmful of mousse, then a 50p sized amount of coconut oil on the lengths and ends afterwards. Wide-tooth comb it into place, ruffling up a little with fingers if you need to. Don't dry it too much before you apply the products, it should feel wet after

morelippy · 15/06/2023 17:32

I think the right product is key. I've tried loads and have found all mousse, scrunching jellies and oils to be hopeless. Boots do a cheap own brand curling crème.. in a pink tub, and Lee Stafford curl custard is good.

When your hair is wet.. really wet.. work some through and then only blot if you need to. Scrunch it up and then DONT TOUCH, other than very gentle extra scrunching til it's dry. It's the drying that develops my curls.

Then just scrunch out any crunchiness and leave it.

Mine comes out different every day. I don't care anymore, I just go with it.

You need moisturise or oil in your hair, I got an expensive L’oreal oil that kind of helps! I think blow drying it helps smooth it out.

Agreed if in plait or French plait it helps smooth out frizz or just when you take it out it’s in nice waves/curls depending on tightness.

going to try @IndianSummer78 ‘s trick of mousse too.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 15/06/2023 17:38

I also think mine is the annoying type of hair that’s not quite curly can be wavy and once or twice in past when I don’t both to comb it through it settles into nice curls/waves. I can’t be arsed doing curly girl method and the time it went perfectly curly I can’t recall if it had remains of a perm in it.

My hairdresser when she tongs it curly it looks great and very natural but I don’t have the patience to do that on me!

I swear by Bumble & Bumble Invisible Oil Primer. It leaves my hair super soft with lovely beachy waves and no fly aways.

justasoul · 15/06/2023 17:54

The lazy curly method: divide wet hair in 4 sections, a little bit of leave in cream, comb/brush through and scrunch. Hold product of choice (gel or mousse), another scrunch and put it up on a microfibre turban towel thingy. Leave it a bit to help dry quicker. If a cast has formed, I scrunch it out with a tiny bit of oil (2 pumps if using a pump version) when dry.

Products I use:
Body Shop Jamaican Castor Oil - a pea sized amount per part
Noughty Hey Curl scrunching jelly
or V05 curly mousse
Avon hair oil - I had the Argan oil and now using the curly hair one

I also use a wooden comb as plastic stuff makes my hair puff - static!

whoruntheworldgirls · 15/06/2023 17:58

Also following for tip. Mine goes like candy floss, same when blow dried so I always straighten and would like a break from it

scrantonelectriccity · 15/06/2023 18:02

A gel that you scrunch out once the cast has formed and hair is dry. I really rate the Only Curls gel.

Can be hit and miss with which brands and what amounts suit you hair though and I find it best to put it on soaking wet hair once you've scrunched upwards to form your waves/curls and then don't touch your hair again until it's dry

justasoul · 15/06/2023 18:11

Oh and if your hair feels too soft, it might need a bit of texture. I find a sea salt spray helps - I use it between the leave in cream and the gel/mousse. I got the cheapest one from Tesco, works fine.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 15/06/2023 19:47

Avoid anything with glycerine in. Mine has gone from curls to candy floss this week. Have had to ditch my Aldi conditioner and have used Alberto balsam instead, with boots curl cream.

GettingStuffed · 15/06/2023 20:39

Mines the opposite I let it dry naturally and my waves are better than if I faff around.

I leave it in a towel turban , hair is currently too short to plop, around 30 minutes is a good time, nit then dried really quickly

I have the same hair and came on to say exactly this.

Lucia574 · 15/06/2023 21:17

Not tried it, but got my eye on JVN air dry cream, which gets good reviews.

If you're going to blow-dry and your hair is anything other than straight (and you're not trying to straighten it) you need a diffuser attachment for your dryer otherwise you'll get a fluffy puffy mess

Grapefruit size? Wouldn't that be like half the can of mousse?!

"Mine comes out different every day. I don't care anymore, I just go with it."

This is my approach. In my 40s now and just couldn't give a toss what others think 🤷

MyHusbandisRonWeasley · 15/06/2023 22:12

John Frieda frizz ease lightweight serum (when hair wet) followed by VO5 frizz free air dry cream (when hair has air dried slightly)
OR
the John Frieda serum followed by natural hold hairspray lightly all over and underneath layers (both when hair wet). I use either elnett natural hold or silvikrin natural hold.

Both ways may need a slight scrunch or fingers pulling through once dry.

The VO5 works best for my DD and the hairspray works best on me.

soupmaker · 15/06/2023 22:30

I second John Frieda Lightweight All-In-One serum. I use two squirts on wet hair. Leave to air dry. DO NOT TOUCH THE HAIR. Also use the serum on dry hair.

MrJi · 15/06/2023 22:32

Hershesons everything cream. I have fine curls and I never use a hairdryer. I only ever let my hair dry naturally, and this cream stops the fluff.

No, it expands in your hand as you're squirting it out. Although you will get through the can quicker. People can't manage their curly/wavy hair because they don't use enough product, it's a common problem. So they go straighten it and smooth on a pea sized blob of serum over the top layer to combat frizz on the only bit of hair exposed to the elements instead
