Where do you shop if you’re in your mid 30’s?

I have no idea anymore!
New Look seems too teenager-ish (though they do have some nice items)
H&M just seem mental.
River island, too young.
Love next for kids clothes.

I’ve just ordered some things from Roman as I liked the look of some dresses that were advertised on my instagram 🙈 have I dipped into old lady territory?

@Darkroot , I like New Look and H&M but not Roman. River Island is Ok.
I like Zara, M&S for basics, Uniqlo, and lots of other shops.

Stay clear of the ones I like as they obviously are only for old women like me.

Sarahtm35 · 11/06/2023 16:12

I’m 35 and I wouldn’t think twice about shopping at newlook and river island!!??
what’s wrong with H&M?
I’m genuinely confused at your opinion on this?
roman IS for older women and you’re only in your 30s!

BangingOn · 11/06/2023 16:12

H&M online is much easier to shop than instore
&Other Stories
Cos
Hush

Darkroot · 11/06/2023 16:16

I do like the shops I mentioned! Maybe it’s just the styles atm but they just don’t feel like they’re aimed at me

ASOS
Matalan
H&M
Very
Vinted

3girlsandapooch · 11/06/2023 16:31

I agree with your darkroot. I had seen lots of clothes I like in new look the other, but upon trying them on the fit just no longer suited my body.
I have also recently purchased some dresses and a skirt from roman....which I have to say are much more suited to my shape.

febrezeme · 11/06/2023 16:31

I love Marks and Spencer - surprised at myself really - but love their sweaters - always new colours, skinny jeans and cropped wide leg jeans, mum jeans, the sports style wide leg trousers with the side stripe

LadyMcLadyface · 11/06/2023 16:33

H&M (online)
M&S
Hush

Also bought a dress from Roman advertised on my Instagram 🙈😂

NoodletheSchnoodle · 11/06/2023 16:38

I'm 37, very body conscious and un-adventurous when it comes to fashion and I tend to buy at:
Next
H&M
Joules
Odd bit from New Look
Asda/Sainsburys/Tesco

NoodletheSchnoodle · 11/06/2023 16:38

Oh and have just started venturing into M&S

ItsCalledAConversation · 11/06/2023 16:38

I’m verrrrry late 30s (cough 40) and I shop in:
Local independent clothes stores (“boutiques” I suppose)
Charity shops for brands (Joseph/aquascutum/mulberry sort of things( at a bargain
Vinted for same
Whistles
Sainsbury’s for basic vests, ts, sweats
Seasalt for leggings
Lululemon, Sweaty Betty
Sloggi for pants
Rigby and Peller for bras

Yes, I think this is what I meant… my body shape has always been more… mature? Really big bust, bit of a belly which is much worse after two c sections.
Most tops in new look for example are very cropped, I look ridiculous in them! A lot of the stuff in H&M seems to be very billowy and oversized with not much shape.
Maybe it’s more the fashion that doesn’t suit me atm rather than the shops? 🤷‍♀️
I just don’t seem drawn to anything since I’ve hit mid thirties, thought maybe I was looking in the wrong place!

Im 37, I shop on ASOS and H&M mainly. River island is horrible and I find matalan way too frumpy. Sainsburys is ok if I need a shirt for work or something.

Mariposa123 · 11/06/2023 17:46

I like Uniqlo and also another fan of M&S jeans (me 5 years ago would have been appalled!)

I’ve also started using vinted to buy more ‘grownup’ brands like Boden or COS. I’ve definitely found my shape has changed since having my 2nd child even if my weight hasn’t. I tried on a dress I’d bought from Monki in lockdown today and it looked awful so gave it to my younger sister. Sticking to the midi dress from now on

Blueberrylemoncake · 11/06/2023 17:55

Fatface (although I don't like some of their patterns)
M&S

Occasionally find something nice in New Look or H&M.

I find it so hard shopping at the minute because everything seems to be aimed at teenagers or 50 year olds and not much in-between!

KirstenBlest · 11/06/2023 18:34

I'll admit that the high street stores don't excite me, but if I rummage I might find something in the likes of Zara.

My elderly mother likes Fat Face and SeaSalt. I find them fine but rarely buy anything for myself there. White Stuff often has nicer thing than I expect.

Tu is fine, but again rarely buy anything from there.

I haven't been in Next for years.

TempRyeZing · 11/06/2023 18:37

If I had the body of an athletic 19 year old I would shop at Zara, New Look and H&M where the clothes are mostly skimpy in terrible fabrics but the body is so toned and slim a bin bag would look stylish! but since I don't sadly, I shop at places where the clothes are mostly cut to accommodate lumps and bumps so it is M&S, Seasalt, Boden, Cos, even Uniqlo sometimes.
My face is also melting with jowls and undereye hollows, I just look try hard in young twenties style, even if I had a fitter body I just look older since I hit mid 30s but that's a moan for another thread. Sorry if I brought anyone down!

Yes!! Thank you for summing up what I was actually trying to say! 😆

I’ll wait for my Roman dresses to arrive and see if they suit me. Tbh, a lot of their dresses cater to my body shape and cover up the problem areas so 🤷‍♀️ they might work!

I don’t like many of the high street shops - quality is not great generally. Me and most of my friends gradually stopped buying as much from lower end high street shops in our late 20s/early 30s and started buying less items but higher quality items and/or using eBay and Vinted more for specific brands that do really nice clothes but may be a bit expensive.

I would look for new and used items from shops like Sézane, Rouje, Zadig and Voltaire, Bellerose, American Vintage, Liberty, Ganni, The Kooples… for specific items like jeans I’d go to Hiut, Outnet, Levi’s, Blackhorse Lane, or jumpers the Knotty Ones, &Daughter, Ami Amalia, Navygrey, coats Max Mara, Shop the Curated, Barbour (mostly look at their collaboration collections - I have a gorgeous Alexa Chung x Barbour jacket ) second hand I’d look for pure cashmere/wool coats or jackets from any brand on eBay, Vinted etc.

OverTheCountryClub · 11/06/2023 19:54

I am 35 and mainly shop at TK Maxx, Next, Roman (loads of nice stuff in there although mn appears to hate it), New Look, Asos, Primark and the supermarket ranges (especially like Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Asda). I don't understand Zara or H&M - they have very good advertising campaigns but whenever I go to the shops they are like jumble sales and the sizing is more erratic than Primark (which is saying something!). I love River Island but it's quite pricey and always seems more aimed at tall people so doesn't fit quite right on me.

FernGully43 · 11/06/2023 20:00

I'm 34 and get lots of my stuff from next.
After this thread, I'm going to get looking in m&s though!

TrudyProud · 11/06/2023 21:57

I'm 36 and generally shop at
And other stories
Cos
M&S
Next

I agree new look feels more teen and if I'm honest some of the materials aren't really for me. Though did buy some cheap pieces (Xmas jumpers, stretchy winter jumper dresses etc) from their maternity range during my 3rd trimester

hermioneee · 11/06/2023 22:06

What's wrong with Roman?
Late 30s and was browsing skirts on there yesterday and thought they looked really nice!
OP - there is another thread on here about M&S not being that great but honestly for basics I think they're great. You can filter by fabric (more shops online should do this) which I think really helps separate the tat from the good stuff.

sunsunsunsunx · 11/06/2023 22:08

Asos
River island
M&S - I used to thing this was for older generation but they actually have some nice clothes.
Next - occasionally
Zara

piggybenben · 11/06/2023 22:12

I like m&s and uniqlo for good fabrics. Also shop hobbs/Ted baker/Ralph Lauren for work outfits.
