Making a jumpsuit - help me pick my fabric

MySewingUsername · 10/06/2023 18:21

I am taking inspiration from the gorgeous jumpsuits at Nancy Mac. I am making myself a jumpsuit for an upcoming outside wedding.

I am using this pattern https://shop.deer-and-doe.fr/en/sewing-patterns/122-sirocco-jumpsuit-pdf.html

I am planning the top in a patterned fabric and the trousers in a matching plain.

Which option do you like best:
option 1
Option 2
option 3.

Sirocco Jumpsuit

Mock-wrap knit jumpsuit with short set-in sleeves and pleated pants. Version A has tapered legs, version B is a romper.

Love the jumpsuit.

And from your options, I’d go for 3

Schoolchoicesucks · 10/06/2023 18:34

Wow, wish I could sew well with jersey, pattern looks great. Agree that option 3 is my fave fabric.

SquirrelFeed · 10/06/2023 18:37

I like 1 best

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 10/06/2023 18:40

I like 1 & 3 - they have similar colours I think? Maybe 3 is more 'fun' and 1 more classic sk it depends on which you prefer.

WobblyLondoner · 10/06/2023 18:40

I'm impressed with your sewing skills - I can manage dresses and tops but have not yet attempted trousers, let alone a jumpsuit!

I've never seen a jumpsuit in two different fabrics - won't it look like trousers and a shirt? I'd worry it might not look dressy enough for a wedding but you'll have a better sense about what others are going to wear.

Of the fabrics I like the stone one best.

WestOfWestminster · 10/06/2023 18:45

Wasn't keen on 1. I like option 3 although i'd do the whole thing in the same fabric.

Goldrushed · 10/06/2023 19:00

I like 1 and 3 is also nice. I also think same fabric for top and bottom would be nicer.

dancingsands · 10/06/2023 19:14

1 or 3 but all over pattern

Blip · 10/06/2023 19:16

3
Same fabric

Birdsongsinging · 10/06/2023 19:20

I’m another one saying 3 but all in the same fabric. What a great talent to have.

Tupperwarefan · 10/06/2023 19:26

Id go for 3. Love it

MySewingUsername · 10/06/2023 19:32

Interesting people saying they are impressed with sewing jersey - it is much easier that cottons as no zips or buttons and there is give in the fabric so you don’t need to be that precise with the fit.

I will think about doing it in 1 fabric. I was inspired by the Nancy Mac one that I love. https://www.nancymac.co.uk/collections/jumpsuits-1/products/pieced-bodice-jumpsuit-in-wild-cherry-silk-velvet

Should the shrug be in the same fabric all over? Or a complementary trim?

I like option 2 but appear to be alone😅

Napmum · 10/06/2023 21:38

Option 3 is my favourite, but option 1 is good, too

Wheresmysewjo · 10/06/2023 21:46

The sirocco is my favourite pattern I've made loads! It's so flattering. I have some green leafy Jersey and some matching cream linen and was considering doing a similar thing.

I like fabric 3 best.

I have just bought this pattern which I've printed but not made yet! It looks similar to what you're aiming for.
I haven't sewn much non stretch before though and I'm debating sewing in Jersey regardless (well not adult clothes, I've sewn bags, nappies and CSP)

Cream linen effect Jersey that should say. Linen would needing ironing so not for me!

MySewingUsername · 11/06/2023 10:28

Thank you all. Going to go with option 3 all over the jumpsuit.

For the shrug I am going to go with a matching plain fabric and edge it with the main pattern to tie it together.

So my second question, should I go with plain jersey, ribbed or a waffle jersey?

(I tried asking my DH but just got a shrug)

Looking forward to seeing your finished results - I'd prefer plain jersey.

SideWonder · 11/06/2023 11:37

My main comment is that the fabric is way over-priced! And it’s not clear if it’s 100% cotton, or poly-cotton ….

MySewingUsername · 11/06/2023 12:22

95% cotton 5% elastane. Which is as high a cotton as you can get with a stretch fabric. 210 g per metre so a nice weight.

Do you have a better website that offer cotton jersey? Of a good weight?

I get my fabric from here

The woman who owns it makes clothes as well as selling fabric

Does cotton jersey have the right drape for that pattern? I've seen lots of lovely versions of it, but usually in bamboo or viscose jersey. I'd be worried it will just 'hang' and not look too nice. Have you looked at the # on Instagram? That will give some indication of whether people have success with cotton jersey.

Have you seen the Zadie jumpsuit? I've seen loads of nice versions of that in nice weddingy fabric. I've never made it, but it seems to be v popular.

MySewingUsername · 11/06/2023 13:20

I think it will. It has enough elastane to give it stretch and stuff I have had in the past behave very similarly to any other stretch jersey, maybe a little stiffer which I’m ok with. I prefer the feel of cotton to viscose or polyester and printed bamboo is even more expensive.

Mine have all been made out of cotton Jersey. They've come out well.
